  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X Rentals

Not sure that kit costs 26 200 $ (applying the 2%/day rule of the total value). You can rent an EPIC for that price.

(Its not my offer) But yes, exactly what i think.

Red One Kit costs ~350.-/day, Epic M kit ~1500.-/day, i think the Scarlet will be ~400.-day...

There's no question that if your primary source of income is rental income then conducting your business in the most client friendly way is a must. If you are just renting it out to documentary crews or no budget films as a side project then you just need to be clear about the pitfalls and price accordingly. A good rental house will always have a spare at base and agree to send it to you at no cost if the first camera fails. I'd also expect that whoever delivers the replacement camera to set should be knowledgable. If you send a driver the crew will feel like they've been left out in the cold.
I agree with BenJ that any serious production is going to be a no no alone. The smart thing would be to team up with another studio/filmmaker who has the same plan and underwrite each other's hire. Or better still have a network of people. Personally if I had one camera to rent out and it failed, I WOULD NOT send them on their way. I'd pay out of my own pocket to buy in another kit and send that out to the crew with the problem. Otherwise you are simply passing them onto the next company.
I'd also never ever make a promise to pay money 'for whatever shooting days they've lost'. Much more sensible to knock that day off the bill and then offer an extra day free either on the current or next job. It's a simple way to rebuild the relationship and you aren't promising the earth to people you don't know.

I did imply that rental is not my primary source of income. Also, I'm mostly going to be targeting students and low budget crews. This has worked well thus far with my audio engineering business. I also live near several art schools that don't have the budget for a Red camera. Really, I'd be happy pulling in an extra $250 a day renting the Scarlet. If business is good enough, I'll eventually buy another one as a backup (as well as my own personal camera C)

These are rental packages/rates. And about the backup coverage discussion, our insurance covers us for 10k of rental coverage during the time when our primary camera goes out and we need to rent another, whether its for client or for our own project.

so the launch kits at $9750 would be £65 p/day at 1% and £130 p/day at 2%. It wouldn't surprise me to see a basic kit doing very well at £750+VAT p/week.

Am I misunderstanding?

Isn't 1% of £9750, £97.50?

Im going to agree saying that around 500 is no price for an epic package. Again, the 2 per cent rule, rental house wise... look at 7d prices. Or HVX, around 300 dollars (the fact that no one probably rents it much anymore is besides the point).

There are many people here that will own a scarlet for their own projects and also might rent it out to small shoots, (meaning less than 20,000 a day shoots), that would probably not shoot in the Louvre. And I agree, just give a fair price since you can't probably guarantee the same service than a rental house and be honest with your limitations, whichever they might be!

Ryan, they also ship around the country. So no one is safe. I love borrow lenses and rent from them all the time. Their 3 day rental is almost always the same as a 1 day from the other guys. But is it good for us in the north bay? Probably not.

They have at least five pick up locations around the bay area. I'm gonna probably just see what I can get with an affordable full package rental with the art school students

24-70L
TVLogic monitor

shoulder rig
FF
4"jib
Arri kit
Kino Flo
2 LED panel lights
Litepanels Minuplus

I'm asking for $1000 for all my gear and myself.

Oh word, sounds reasonable. You as an operator or DIT? would you have a DIT setup at that rate or would that be more $? What lenses do you own?

I am curious because we are going to be offering DIT services and/or DIT equipment for jobs that require it.

Either as an Operator, AC or DIT. Basic laptop with RCX. Right now the lenses are a tokina 11-16 and 24-70L for the canon mount. Still deciding whether or not to pick up some PL glass or go down the Canon road.

We have a ton of canon glass so come down to tribeca, good prices too

Heh, there you go, the going rate is FREE so the only way to beat it is start paying your customers to take the gear! :ihih: Just glad I'm not in the rental business.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to charge for my gear; I just can't find anyone willing to pay for it. Until I do I bring it for free or I don't move forward.

Free? You are charging TOO MUCH!

With little experience, you are a LIABILITY on set!

Great to see enthusiasm, I hope you're joking or getting paid for your time,
but why not get an internship or go to the local public access channel
or high school or theater or non-profit and volunteer your time ?

I'm not joking and I'm already volunteering my time, along with my gear! With regard to interning at a high school, we appreciate the advice but, despite it working for you for so long, it isn't necessarily the best choice for the rest of us. :) In the meantime, I'll compete in my market as hard as I can. If someone offers me a rental fee, great. If not, I'll make lemonade.
