  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet X #248 "Ghengis"

Thank you guys! Love the community here!

Great pic!
Would you mind to tell me, whats you used to power the baby. What battery plate, how is it mounted, ab or v-mount? Cause it looks pretty slick ;-)

Its a Wooden Camera Plate, with AB mount, Switronics batteries. Gonna get some GlobalMedia Pros soon. But its nice having travel friendly 94wh's.....

Rock on Timur, how do you like those iPanchros? Did you shoot most of your reel with them?

I cant love the iPanchros any more than i already do.

Actually most of my Reel is over a year and a half old. The only thing on there w/ panchros are the dancers (1:48) and the bar scene (1:59). Its going to be updated soon.

And this was shot on iPanchros on Scarlet:

Welcome to New York, Ghengis!

Timur, any time you need a Canon mount or I need a PL mount, we should talk...

(And I still have that RPZ 18-85mm waiting for you... you wanted to evaluate that at some point... want it to play with for a while? I'm off to Scotland next week and I'm NOT dragging the bloody RPZ with me!)

Mike

definitly sir! i cant wait to try the canon mount out.

This is GREAT footage! I will see if I can show you a fast color correction on it.

IMHO if you aren't color correcting your footage, Red isn't the right camera for you. This isn't a slam on anyone, it's just that the Raw workflow almost assumes you will color correct it. What you shot had me all excited! Then I read your ill feelings. Downloading your video now, please stand by.

EDIT: running out the door for my kids DR appointment, rendering out something quick but render heavy. Will share later.

Yea, I'm not down on the camera. I went to see a dcp of GWDT, and I know it can look amazing. I'm just trying to figure out. What I did wrong. I'm exposing wrong. I looked at LOG while shooting, and exposed it like I would have in sLog, or cLog. That apparently under exposes grossly on MX.

Hmm... I take it back, it's noisy! lol. What ISO were you shooting at? It would be great to know more information. We know they were the 2.8 Panchros...

My tests were mildly successful, but more in the realm of "I can't fix it but I can make it better". Not worth posting. The footage is still very engaging, and for the right story type would be great, even. But I would love to get the original R3Ds for a few shots.

That light ( CFL? ) in the alley near the end was banding like crazy! Something, as always, to watch out for.

I think you should shoot these places again going by a light meters reading, then putting that footage up just as it comes out. would be interesting. Or shoot it all at 800 ISO...

Had a conversation with my DIT. He looked it all over. Apparently its all 3stops under exposed. I exposed for ISO 1600. I wanted to shoot at a T5.6 I used the duclos 11-16, it really gets sharp around T5.6. So next time, ISO 500, and expose for redgamma2. I think that's the trick.

As far as banding, yes its suceptible like all cmos cameras. Hell there is even banding in girl with dragon tattoo.

That makes a lot of sense.

Let me say thanks so much for sharing this! It's a great example of something anyone could do and not know about it till post. Tests FTW.

After watching your video, I must say that there is an enormous amount of noise in the footage. Just out of curiosity, are many other people experiencing this? What could Timur have done incorrectly to capture footage with this much noise? Or, is this amount of noise typical and you all just remove it in post?

Should I be concerned about noise issues...?

I exposed for REDLOGfilm as i would have for the Alexa or F3. Thats a big nono apparently. The RED IS noisy, but only if you push it up 3 stops like i did.

I shot some stuff today @ ISO320 (what i think the real native ISO is cause it behaves MUCH better at 320) and i'm gonna post some footage tommorow. (transcodes take all night... guess i need a rocket....)

Hey timur, I wrote a post in the Scarlet Best Practices for Exposure thread you may want to read. Monitor in red gamma 2, expose for 320 and use your exposure view and stop light religiously. Do not monitor and expose in log, it lifts your blacks and such, and you will under expose if you work by eye. 320 if you want to nail it perfectly, 800 if you want some margin for error on highlights.

exposing for 320 will give you a cleaner look, but exposing for 800 will give you a more "filmic" look. it's not just highlight retention, it's highlight roll off. that's on of the biggest key things that makes a movie look like a movie. native DR of film is always that many stops, it never changes, that's one of the key things for the "feel" of film. and what digital cameras strive for, so it's give and take. the MX sensor is technically stills a 320 sensor when it comes to noise, but the added gain at 800 iso gives it that much more highlight retention and that's why it's the sweet spot. exposing for redlogfilm isn't bad at all either, you just have to know where your middle grey is. it's different for every camera after all. but it's a good way of seeing how noisy the shot can be if the blacks were lifted up high, and how much highlight retention you really do have, instead of having a aggressive gamma curve on it. it's give and take really, the most important thing is knowing your ratios and working in your zones. all these hollywood films look that good on Epic and r1 because of these principles.

that's why hollywood dp's do endless camera tests before any shoot :)

Interesting factoid.....

Youtube will accept ProresHQ files.

I uploaded a HQ 3k file to test.... check it...

Hi Timur!

I had the same problem, exposing at 1250 on a TVLogic 5.6" looked like a fine amount of noise, opened it up in RedCine and was blown back. Director loves it, I am less keen...

Even a black jacket in diffused indoor daylight (ISO 800, f/4, 1/48, 7:1) came in with too much noise.

Call me an idiot, I suspect this is because we are both New Yorkers using the sensor at humidity / temperature levels not at all similar to those of Southern California. Have you ran a black shade on your camera yet? I've been running about shooting with the default black shade, pure idiocy I know.

Just shot some very low light dance performance footage

@800iso, 360degree shutter. Ocean of noise.......

Im doing something wrong....... Ive seen.so much awesomr red footage.....
