  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Weapon?

We know for a fact the throughput on the weapon system is better. I think 5k at a higher fps but not enabling 6k would be a good trade off to keep Epic Dragon's at least somewhat unique. The Scarlet Dragon now has the same FOV as what the Epic-X had I'm perfectly happy with that!

I think if we look at the compression to fps ratios for Raven it's already telling:
3:1 REDCODE for 4.5K (4608 × 2160) at 24 fps
8:1 REDCODE for 4.5K (4608 × 2160) at 60 fps
15:1 REDCODE for 4.5K (4608 × 2160) at 120 fps

I'd say expect those for Scarlet W at 5.5k

Yes, what Sam said!

Unfortunately, Scarlet Dragon does NOT have same FOV as Epic X.

The FOV of Epic MX @ 5K is approx equivalent to FOV of Epic Dragon @ 5.5K.

If the Dragon sensor is new to you, 5K is essentially S35 3-perfect btw. That is a good thing.

is the MX going to have an upgrade path?

It did, but the Dragon ugrade is long past over and Red was pretty emphatic at the time that there was no other opportunity planned. I'd say the way is shut, "all things change" notwithstanding.

I mean there is a path, but it involves no incentive from Red.

Not sure how much time you spend here on REDuser, but I would advise any RED owner to consider it an essential "tool." Not only do you get great input from some pretty fabulous and talented folks in the industry, you have a direct line to the thinking and activity at RED, itself. If you had spent some time hanging here, you'd know that there was a lot of information about the MX upgrade path. It has happened and, it would seem, is pretty much done.

I purchased a Red Epic MX with the intensions of selling it and getting a dragon. Now with all of the weapon announcements, there's a good chance I may end up keeping the Epic MX and financing a second camera through Red at some point once the other cameras are announced. Of course I would love a dragon sensor, but it's definitely a weird time period right now. I feel like unless RED drops the prices of the Red Epic Dragon, it's going to be a tough buy for some.

Its 5K, look at the higher res source:

On a side note, I really wish they would stop the whole "Battleship Grey" look for Scarlet.

I love you guys and gals at RED :cheers2:

And ya know Raven by design looks super sweet (Weapon too of course) ...

But Scarlet-W... well...

Bride of Frankenstein comes to mind

Sorry to say it, but seriously, just paint it black (or maybe a sexy red)

I was right about there being Monochrome Scarlet Weapon! I think the jury is still out on 5K. That number is so out of focus, it could be a 6. I mean Scarlet Dragon is technically a 6k sensor now. I doubt they'd regress! I'm thinking they move the Epic Dragon Monochrome sensors into the Scarlet W's. Come on Sam, where's that 5kws 120fps attitude? I think you may have hit the mark by posturing Red moving the Scarlet W's in to Epic Dragon territory of 150MB/s to 200 MB/s.

I love the scarlet design. It has something from Hal 9000, especially the scarlet MX & dragon (on the new W I would prefer the door on the right in grey with RED written in white instead of the skull like the older versions, maybe it could be something Red could sell as an accessory, differents doors). And please no grooves on the Scarlet. It's already a dust trap on the redstation.

Not for those of us looking for the next hybrid solution (Stills/Movies).

I think the Raven is almost officially a DMC (not DSMC), and Scarlet W will be too, if the sensor hovers at S35.

This reasoning is based on the assumption that if RED says DSMC, the S needs to be as good as the C. Obviously that has never been the case (no dedicated stills mode), but the Weapon at 6k should be quite fine from a "look" perspective.

I really do wonder what will happen first: an ergonomic, lightweight, not power hungry photo/video solution from RED—or that traditional camera makers like Canon or Nikon get to a point where their video is good enough (ProRes quality). Hopefully the 1Dx mkII will get DPAF. I wonder what codec and Canon Log flavour they'll use for the 4k movie mode.

I like your point. The S should be equal.

I have reason to believe that we can expect much more S from Raven as software updates roll out in the coming year.

I just can`t understand why is a scarlet weapon cheaper then a scarlet dragon (about 40%) and a weapon weapon, or epic weapon is more expensive (not a little bit) then a Epic Dragon.

Scarlet-W

We have to keep in mind that this new camera is a Scarlet-W and not Weapon. A Scarlet Weapon could be a possibility somewhere down the road but noting is guaranteed.

But it is Scarlet Weapon, "-W" for short. Weapon as I understand it refers to a system that consists of a particular body and it's accessories. Scarlet-W is a Weapon variant.

By that reckoning Raven is not part of the Weapon family primarily due to the fixed mount. It is not the same body.

jarred and brent made it perfectly clear that its not a scarlet weapon, its a W. who knows what it all means, but a weapon is a weapon, like and epic is an epic.
they are all part of the same family because of the sensor and processing and ll have slightly different bodies.

I haven't read that but if that is indeed their intent then I can count myself as one of the truly confused. I don't really give two shits what the names are so long as it doesn't become more difficult to budget and rent a Red as a result. There really needs to be a clear rationale that all can understand methinks.

For my edification, can you provide quotes where this was made so clear?

thanks

What would be de difference between a Weapon and a W?
They both records prores they both don`t need black shade calibration, and goes for the DSMC2 accessories. The body has the same connections.

Totaly agree.

Lets reformulate:

I don`t understand why a scarlet build for DSMC2 would be cheaper than a scarlet build for DSMC (1) in a family where the EPIC build for DSMC2 is more expensive than a EPIC build for DSMC (1).

How about the likelyhood that electronic guts are easier to manufacture than they used to be?

That could be the answer to the scarlet issue, but why are epic-w`s or Weapon`s more expensive?
Of course is a branding strategy.
So we are not buying cameras because what they do (anymore). We are buying cameras for what they don`t do.
