  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Weapon?

guess you keep the 6k Sensor, but now get 6k 24p and lower compression?
 
I don't find it confusing. Weapon is the new body, new ecosystem of accessories etc.. Scarlet was never that. Scarlet has always been known as a sub-set... A little sister to the flagship model, whatever it is.

I did only assume it would be Scarlet Weapon because the badge says Scarlet-W. That, and all of the above. It seems a given.

I think Jarred insisted on the fact that it's not "scarlet weapon" but just "scarlet W".
 
Jarred mentioned it being called "Scarlet-W" in another thread about naming concerns.
Funny thing is "Scarlet-W" is easier to type, but it's actually less syllables to say "Scarlet Weapon" than "Scarlet Double U"

The reality is Weapon is Epic-W with a few different flavors.

Scarlet-W will sit below it in feature-set, but above Raven. Raven is sort of a whole new deal and price point.

If I had to make a silly list to visualize this:

Weapon CF/Forged 8K = $$$$$
Weapon CF/Forged 6K = $$$$
Weapon MG 6K = $$$
Scarlet-W = $$
Raven = $

That's what the DSCM2 lineup is shaping up to be at the moment. Personally I think for many Weapon owners Scarlet-W might be the B camera they are hoping for and for Scarlet Dragon owners it's 100% what they are looking for to jump into DSMC2.

We'll have to wait and see what the features will be though.

At least we know its NOT a fixed mount for sure. PL is an option.
I dont think it'd be outlandish to think Scarlet-W would do 6k 30fps. 5k 60fps, 4.5k 120fps? I'd love 6k 48fps, but being conservative.

Oh the possibilities.

 
I really wonder where does Epic Dragon fit in all this.

I really think it will go up to 120fps @5kWS with the best compression possible. We already have 60fps @5kWS. Then maybe some nice 5.5k possibilities. And why not 6k @24fps 7:1.
 
Speculation;

Or perhaps it could be as simple as the Scarlet Dragon to Scarlet-W upgrade mimics the EPIC Dragon to Weapon upgrade?

aka same sensor, some new electronics to squeeze more out of the sensor - body matching the dimensional form factor of Raven and other Weapons.

As inferred from the pre-NAB pronouncements, upgrade only for those that Dragonized their Scarlets.
You can always buy new if those clothes don't fit.

I would LOVE if that were true. Just staying cautious as Epic to Weapon didnt really see a bump in framerates.
I'd also love to see if they could put back more anamorphic options.

But the Raven is close now. 4.5K @120fps. For 6000$.
And the Raven's data rate is 140MB/s. I would bet on some datarate increase on the scarlet-W compared to Raven. Even unchanged at 140MB/s max, and according to the redcalculator page on red.com, it means 96fps @5K 15:1 or 120fps @5KWS 15:1 or 24fps @6k 6:1. Epic dragon datarate is 170-200MB/s (depending on the minimag), Weapon 225 to 300MB/s. Maybe they will just increase the scarlet-W datarate to 150MB/s that will permit to do 5k HFR @14:1 instead of 15:1, 5.5kWS 100fps 14:1 and 6K 24fps 5:1.
Or maybe the scarlet-W will just replace the epic dragon.
We would have:
Raven 140MB/s
Scarlet-W 170-200MB/s
Weapon 225-300MB/s

So the Scarlet-W monochrome is out, is nice and is 5K. Maybe it's just the monochrome. I still expect 5.5K for the regular one. If not I expect its datarate to be on par with the epic dragon. 5K with the epic dragon compression would be nice. I would just be disappointed if we just have 5K with Raven datarate.

I was right about there being Monochrome Scarlet Weapon! I think the jury is still out on 5K. That number is so out of focus, it could be a 6. I mean Scarlet Dragon is technically a 6k sensor now. I doubt they'd regress! I'm thinking they move the Epic Dragon Monochrome sensors into the Scarlet W's. Come on Sam, where's that 5kws 120fps attitude? I think you may have hit the mark by posturing Red moving the Scarlet W's in to Epic Dragon territory of 150MB/s to 200 MB/s.
