  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-W has Begun...

I pre-order a raven and then I switch to the S-W pkg.

I pre-ordered the Raven 11-16-15

And then I switched to th S-W on 12-15-15

Does anyone know how long will I be waiting to be allocated?

I wouldn't count on it any time soon. Seems they haven't gotten past the first day - Sep 24th, SW package orders. Of course i'm not Brent or Jarred so this is solely based on information found on this forum.

Advice: Don't plan jobs around your order until you get that "nearly unpredictable" email.

By "Sept 24th", you're referring to Raven pre-orders that got switched the S-W, right? I'm just clarifying because S-W preorders didn't open until December. If it's true that they haven't even gotten through the first day of Raven preorders, that's a major bummer since I'm sure a lot of people switched and then the floodgates of the real Scarlet-W preorders in December. Still confuses me why people who preordered the Raven got bumped ahead of everyone.

I would like to know this too....it has been discussed to death, but people who signed up for the cheapest camera RED has ever made went to the front of the line. It is what it is. I can wait my turn.

That's been puzzling me as well, has it been confirmed that only switch over orders have received allocation emails?

Not sure why this is difficult to understand. They ordered their cameras with an earlier time stamp, they had the option to pay for a more expensive camera which RED benefits from, and because they were willing to buy a camera and others were not at the time Raven was announced - RED rewarded them. Very simple.

Well not so simple. I guess some people are just wondering why this is the case because Red always rewarded their current customers. If we're following Red history the scarlet owners should be first in the queue. And anyway the Raven was supposed to be shipped after the scarlet-W, so we could also say that switchers should have their camera at the time the Raven is supposed to be delivered.

Well anyway, Brent confirmed that some scarlet owners received emails already. So I guess it will be a mix between Raven switchers and Scarlet upgraders.

Yes, I don't understand any confusion either.

Raven to Scarlet W switchers couldn't really order the Scarlet W when they ordered the Raven since it wasn't available. Once the option presented itself they jumped on it just like the ones who just ordered the Scarlet.

Hopefully their Scarlet W orders are every bit as real as the "real" orders you describe. Would be a shame if the switchers paid Scarlet W price and got a cardboard camera…

THIS

Hi Brent or Jarred,

I know the bodies and S-W packages are in the wild for two weeks, but seems to be in very limited numbers right now as it does not seem to have made it past the first 12 hours of time stamps.

Can we get an update as to when the flood gates might open a bit more and when more units move in volume? I'm checking this thread too much, LOL.

Thanks again for the great work.

EDIT: I'm definitely not trying to be a pain. I've been on a post job the last few weeks for the steady check to pay for the S-W. But post drives me insane, so the the moment my S-W is allocated I'd like to finish up, so hoping for a little clearer picture so I can plan my schedule a bit. Thanks again for all that you guys do at Red.

I hear ya there Gene. A watched pot never boils... La dee da dee da.

Well 1. The Raven wasn't the camera many of us were waiting for. Fixed Canon mount doesn't work for Nikon and PL shooters. It was viewed by many as an entry-level "budget" RED that didn't work for us, so we didn't preorder it. Combine that with the fact that Jarred said there was still going to be an announcement regarding the Scarlet. Don't blame the Scarlet-W's lack of availability for a justification for putting in a Raven preorder. We knew there was going to be a Scarlet coming. So many of use waited. That waiting bit us in the ass.

2. Raven pre-orders have no precedence of RED ownership, a la upgrades. These people put down $500 and that's it. I think it's more than fair that if a Raven preorder wanted to switch over to Scarlet-W, they do so in the same queue as those of us who waited for the Scarlet to be announced.

And you're somewhat wrong about "Once the option presented itself they jumped on it just like the ones who just ordered the Scarlet." because due to the way this is handled, someone who preordered the Raven right away could have decided to switch to Scarlet-W in late January and will receive their Scarlet-W before the "only-Scarlet-W" (non-Raven, non-Scarlet Dragon upgrade) preorders placed on day one in December.

Obviously RED can do whatever they want, so it is what it is. It's certainly a nice bump for people who are jumping from Raven... but as someone who has 0 desire for a Raven and didn't preorder one specifically because I was waiting for Scarlet replacement, I think it's acceptable to be a bit salty as I watch only Raven switchers get their orders fulfilled.

I feel the same way Josh, when I saw the Raven announced I held out to pay over double the price for a Scarlet Dragon in January because the raven wasn't cutting my shooting needs. I'm really grateful the scarlet-w was announced though and jumped in that preorder line immediately on Dec 10, but just mildly disappointed I'm probably a couple months away from getting a red I was hoping to get in January for much more money. (Before I thought the scarlet-w would be an upgrade to the SD instead of a price cut replacement)

I believe there's no point to argue about date stamps other than stay aware of the email and sharing the announcement email of each of us. RED Folks have explained this like 45 times. Let's just wait. I am desperate too! But this is part of the game! They Anticipate and we get exited. If we keep annoying them, maybe the near future they will announce to never ever spell beans to us and non of that beauty that RED folks do all the time. Then We become IBM, or APPLE.

I rather deal with these timing changes, while enjoying the direct 2 way street communication.

my 2 "Desperate Anxious" cents LOL

I hear your points, and you make some really good ones- it does feel like RED is rewarding new (Raven) customers, instead of those of us who've been around a long, long time with RED. I can see how it could make one feel bad.

I don't personally care much about the policy, though. It's a camera. I have a great camera today, so I'm not 'not shooting because I need a new RED'. And for me, I think this latest upgrade is honestly- speaking openly from my own situation- the first time I have not yet outgrown my previous RED before possibly getting a new one. I know everyone's different. But I'm not ashamed to admit that I could continue to grow and film top-flight stuff with what I have today, for a good long while (it's maybe especially easy for me because I live in NY and LA, and I can rent Epic Dragons and Weapons as needed, too). My clients are not begging me for a smaller RED that does some slightly HFR stuff, or demanding ProRes (I rent Alexas then), or complaining about that quarter of a stop or whatever of light sensitivity (and I have some big fucking clients now and then). They don't care, at all. They just care about the work. So, again maybe my case is different than yours and that's OK, for me S-W is kinda a vanity purchase. I don't need it. It'd be nice to have, sure. Might make my life a teeny bit easier. And it'd be lovely to stay up to date with the RED train. But it's not critical, at least for me. I know I will not lose a single job due to a delay by RED.

I don't see exactly where you mean I'm wrong. I'm sure most Raven to Scarlet W switchers realised immediately after seeing Scarlet W that it was a better fit—that is the reason for switching after all.

And the switchers DO end up in the same line as the 'only Scarlet W orders'. But they end up in front because they already had an order in the system. Once the swap is made it's only a Scarlet W order like every other, albeit with an earlier time stamp.

The thing to take home is that there is no malicious intent here. Not from RED and not from Raven buyers somehow making a calculated risk trying to sneak ahead.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Scarlet-Dragon owners get first dibs over everyone, including Raven orders?

As for the Raven jumping ahead, Red likes to reward those who take the plunge / risk first. Look at the Weapons upgrade. Red gave those who paid for the upgrade at NAB 2015 a lower upgrade cost and the $5K accessories credit, which later upgraders did not get. The reason being, they wanted to rewards those who took the gamble early.

When I put down my Raven deposit, I had a feeling the Scarlet-W was coming and I figured I would just switch. I think Red is just rewarding those who took a chance early / early adapters. Raven and Scarlet are only $4000 in price difference so their space is somewhat shared and they are appealing to a similar demographic of user; so I think the approach Red took was fair.

If they did not take the path they took, Raven switchers would have been disgruntled. You can't make everyone happy so I guess it's just the way the cookie crumbles.
