I've waited 10 YEARS to make this post.

I'm elated to say that I am officially part of the RED family!!
I joined this forum at it's inception and had to watch from the sidelines for the past decade as these incredible company and the talented community here rose this RED culture to what it is today.

I'm pinching myself. Can't believe I'm finally here with all of you!

Scarlet-W #1584 aka "Aslan" is here!

Exciting times, eh? I just got attached to a 2nd feature... looks like I get to shoot two features in the first year of having my first Red. :)

Bad ass Rakesh! I hope my RED brings me opportunities like that in the new year!

On the bright side, I got attached to the first one based on stuff I'd shot with an AJA Cion... and then ended up shooting our first scene on a Scarlet Dragon, and we'll shoot the rest on my Epic-W. (Which is Jarred's fault. It was originally going to be Scarlet-W. ;) )

Revenant-style visuals, probably. About what you'd expect from a Galen Rowell/Charlie Waite/Jack Dykinga fan turned cinematographer.

The 2nd was a referral... but it's going to be the first one going into principal photography, since principal for the first won't start until the snow melts out from our location.

Exciting times.

Nearly 6 weeks after allocation and still no news.
I'm so tired of being that painful douche always moaning about delays, but after 10 months of waiting and a fake allocation, starting a new wait with our money gone and without any news nor explanation is a bit irritating.
Can we, at least, have an update on what's going on please?

I agree, though- this insane delay is very worrisome. Epic-W is a fantastic jump into the future. But it's essentially 3x the cost of Scarlet-W if you buy enough media, AKS, etc. for Epic-W, since the Scarlet-W deal I got (Dragon owner) gives you 'free' AKS, etc. And factoring in the cost of a much faster system to run post on... it is easily 3x the cost. Not 2x. And 2x is a lot. Plus, nobody wants 8K in my world, and I bet in 90% of the RED owners' worlds. So, spend a lot and none of your clients care. And some will hate you for it (see the other thread about Nissan being pissed at the huge file handoff).

And so it feels like Scarlet-W, for what we do, is by far the better choice. But the problem is, Scarlet-W doesn't seem to exist, really. Not really. Not like you can buy one and have it in your hands. I've been waiting on mine since Dec 10, 2015 I think. That's close enough to a year to call it a years' wait. Even for RED's colorful and fun history, that's kinda fucked. And I know they have their reasons, and I know they're doing the best they can do. I respect that, and them. They changed my world back in 2007.

But what if the sensor issues are not fixable by RED? What if Helium came out early specifically because RED knows they're fucked with the Dragon sensor, and that situation will not get any better? Unless there's a huge bottleneck that gets cleared up very soon, if I were RED, I'd be working like crazy figuring out how to get a version of Helium into Scarlet-W (bigger pixels = 5K not 8K? I know not a lot about how that works). Or, just kill off Scarlet and Raven finally. Because the waiting has gone on too long.

Seeing a lot of SCARLET-W action on Facebook. I can totally understand the frustration, but it DOES seem like the EPIC-W wave has helped SCARLET-W orders. 6 weeks of waiting for a camera after payment seems a bit long. Are you sure it is not accessories holding the order back?

Your rep would prob be the most help.

I missed the Nissan thread, but I'm curious about it now.

You're right though, it's a big jump from Scarlet-W to Epic-W. There's a lot to recommend it, but the price of entry is steep.

I'd definitely pester your rep, then; mine was allocated near the middle of October, but I made the switch (and it was tough, I really didn't have enough money to pay for an Epic-W, but I was lucky enough to find buyers for a bunch of old gear to make up the difference in short order).

But what if the sensor issues are not fixable by RED?

From what I understand, there are two issues with the Dragon sensor. One is that it's in short supply because Red isn't willing to compromise on quality control, which is a drag when you're waiting but rewarding when you get the camera in your hands. The other is demand; a lot of people want Dragons still. Your reasoning is part of why Dragon is still popular even with Helium out there, but part of it is also just the fact that Scarlet-W is, for what it offers, a bargain. The two closest in terms of features and dynamic range and so on are the Varicam LT and C700, whose price tags are in Epic-W range. Panasonic and Canon are avoiding the Scarlet-W supply problem by pricing their cameras to keep demand down.

What if Helium came out early specifically because RED knows they're fucked with the Dragon sensor, and that situation will not get any better?

The supply problem will go away when Red catches up at long last on the pre-order queue. I visited my local retailer to buy a minimag and found that they haven't successfully gotten a single Scarlet-W in the store... because every Scarlet-W coming off of the production line is already spoken for.

A Helium sensor with bigger pixels wouldn't be a Helium sensor any longer. It would be basically a new design.

Anybody know what the state of play is in the UK for a brand new order, and whether it is faster to go through Red or through CVP?

I have some shoots towards the end of January - Is it insane to think I could order now and have a camera then?

Interesting....

Yes, it's an odd dynamic. If you order today, then you're at the end of the line. If you order from a dealer with inventory that's not claimed yet, even if it's still a preorder, you get a spot in line based on when the dealer placed the order.

I just want to be another voice to chime in to say, I KNOW YOUR PAIN. I ordered on January 1st. I received my camera on November 23rd. I probably could have gotten mine earlier if I didn't switch to the EPIC-W, but then switch back. (I did so because I couldn't reach up to that $20K mark, even though it was a hell of a deal.)

RED IS BUILDING CAMERAS. PROMISE!

They've been quiet because they are probably keeping their focus on being in the shop building the cameras. Every moment we "waste" tapping them on the shoulder to turn around and tell us when will we expect our cameras is taking time away from them actually building the cameras.

And just like everyone else on here that has cameras now, I assure you, the wait is well worth it. Best purchase of the year.....decade for me!

I only put my deposit down in july so probably won't see a the camera til mid next year at this rate, i was on the fence as i was really struggling to justify the benefits over cost of upgrade for the same senser and still am to be honest.

My kit is pretty solid and complete, to change over now a year after the announcement with the old senser for basically the same camera with a face lift seems a bit crazy.

but i still want it:)

I've spoke to a few producers about 8k epic W and they said NO NO NO

it would be great to switch the SW over to helium to make it more attractive in 2017 considering the delay or should i lay off the crack? :)
