Jim famously loves listening to customers. So... X and S won't work on the phone. Try it. I did. The result was complete confusion for the listener. We had to resort to the phonetic alphabet.

That's one reason I think it should be simplified to just EPIC and EPIC-X.

I'm with Robert on this, yes. I was ok with EPIC-S until Christopher offered up that great real world feedback, which is one of the reasons to have had this discussion, and which clearly paid off. Other companies pay millions of dollars to do this kind of user and brand/mark research.

I hope EPIC (EPIC-S or whatever it ends up being) will let go of its Scarlet origins and will come into its own. I understand that may mean a price increase. <ducks for cover>

but it is easy to confirm by just saying..
ok..you want to buy/rent an Epic Standard..

Those of you aspiring filmmakers i would strongly suggest to at least consider reorganizing your thinking. Don't limit yourself with price barriers. You have a good nine months up your sleeve. When you are passionate and dedicated you will make it happen. Don't settle for anything short. Some risks in life are worth taking. This is one of them. I believe some of the most innovate work from these cameras will come from you guys. The capabilities of a new paradigm of story telling with this camera is phenomenal. There probably has never been a greater point in the history of cinema bar the invention of the movie camera right here right now. Try for it. What have you got to loose?

I don't want to piss off above your bubble, no idea how long you are in the business, but here experience speaking. Sometimes a small change can be the difference between to buy or not to buy. As simple as that.

JJ, you are making a big mistake by trying to force a round Scarlet into a square Epic hole. I understand from a marketing POV that you want to marry Scarlet to the Epic name since a) you think you can piggy back on advertising/promotion dollars and b) you can charge more for the Scarlet with an Epic handle, but in the end it is very confusing. (No issue from a business perspecive in raising prices) GM doesn't call their models X, M or S. I have no problem with numbers, but many others don't seem to like them. I still vote for a name. If you don't have some designation that truly differentiates the models, you are going to have people calling rental houses to rent an Epic and ending up with a Scarlet version. Are you going to burn a big "S" on the body?

I like the names, but this could be a nightmare for rental companies.

Personally, I wouldn't want to rent from a company that can't distiguish between when someone wants to hire a camera with an "X" suffix versus an "S" suffix.

I'm very curious as to the actual difference in clarity and performance between the RED zoom and a RED prime.

I haven't used either Red zooms or Red primes, but I expect the difference would be similar to the difference between Zeiss zooms and primes. I shot with a Zeiss 10-1 S16 zoom for a few years, then got a set of Zeiss primes. The image from the primes was cleaner, sharper, and had more color clarity than the zoom. Same manufacturer, same vintage lenses, and the zoom was a good lens, but the primes put it to shame.

Actually, these days there is a lot to lose. I totally agree with your sentiment. Anyone with the desire to tell a story should find a way to do it. But there are times when you have to make sacrifices. And sometimes those sacrifices aren't in favor of your gear.

I teach a lot of aspiring media professionals (not just filmmakers) and I can't honestly tell them to choose equipment over necessities because of their passion. Not in this economy. A good story (well directed, acted, lit and edited with great sound) is a good story no matter the bit rate, dynamic range or codec.

I feel I'd be doing my students a disservice if I asked them to ignore their passions and their dreams. But I'd be doing them a greater disservice if I didn't ask them to put things into perspective.
