  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

I vote for the Epic-S.
It's a "standard" mode epic, and yet the name still ties in with its historical inception as a Scarlet. It's a quibble, but if we're talking names, not substance, why not.
Oh and please, since you are making it an epic, at least have it capable of 60P. 30P is far too limiting. Thanks!

"SS" sounds too Nazi -- Red probably doesn't want that association.
I think 65 years should be enough time to disassociate a couple of letters from the alphabet with the Waffen SS. Besides, they used very distinctive letters that of course are linked.

The Chevy SS (Super Sport) was made by General Motors in the 1960s had a long and successful run, and that was only about 15 or 20 years removed from WWII. Maybe someone who would accuse the best camera company in the world of embracing Naziism due to using an additional s in their name is someone who doesn't fit the new targeted RED customer base of professionals or aspiring professionals.

But maybe you are right. Maybe RED does walk on eggshells.

As of now... we are considering:

EPIC-S (from the old Scarlet name... or STANDARD model)
EPIC-X
EPIC-M (for monster machined)

Does that work for everyone? :)

Jim

So ... EPIC-S is what was Scarlet S35. Less frame rates and compression choices.

EPIC-X has more frame rates, compression choices and features.

EPIC-M is hand built, machined and same features as EPIC-X.

Right? I like it.

hmm, I wonder where does this leave the scarlet FF35?

That is excellent in my view. THANK YOU!

Makes complete sense...

Does this accelerate S35 (Scarlet) EPIC-S? As Fixed 8x 2/3rds was first to roll out as per earlier 'Scarlet' info...

Building a great Menu. I'll have one of each please....

Jim, I do have to admit, when I first saw the EPIC-M designation, I was puzzled thinking you were putting an M sensor in it. At that moment, I thought maybe you weren't yet able to produce enough MX sensors. Do you think anyone will be confused when the RED ONE's are sometimes referred to as "M" or "MX"? Or maybe I was the only one.

I suppose it makes more sense than "Special, Super, and Roadmaster"...I mean "Moviemaster"
Although something optional called Ultramatic or Dynaflow would be cool

It sounds very nice Jim.

The only (slight) problem I see is when Monstro comes out. Epic-M sounds like it would be perfect for Epic Monstro...

But then again, the Monstro program could very well change name, as well. In the RED tradition :)

In any case, congratulations. 2011 looks like a fantastic year for RED.

Oh I'm certain you are right, a Red SS with a gunner attachment on a picatinny rails system should be very popular in Hollywood. :sarcasm:

You could offer it to Spielberg to shoot supplemental material for the Schindler Blu-Ray.

Do you remember how popular the Chevy Nova was in Spanish speaking countries? A Red SS could be equally great.

Red SS would have the added benefit of spooking McCarthy era blacklisters too. Brilliant! ;-)

Maybe it should, but then again, there are groups that will understandably always remember, and a whole country that is permanently sensitized. Besides, to history buffs, the Third Reich and WWII were relatively recent (plus they're the subject of a lot of History Channel programming).

True, he or she might be of dubious desirability anywhere, and I doubt such a person exists. But when you mentioned Waffen SS (the military wing of the SS), I noted a mild irony that this discussion is in "Recon," two above "Crucial Ordnance."

But maybe you are right. Maybe RED does walk on eggshells.
One can take political correctness to unfortunate extremes, but it doesn't hurt to be a little cautious. And to its credit, Red have never been callous in their model-naming conventions.

Having the base model as the "standard" model is right on. Also, now that EPIC-S is no longer tied to the Scarlet lineage, EPIC-S will hopefully have an updated (final?) set of specs that comprise the EPIC baseline standard.

I'm really wanting to have one of these in my hands now. The next milestone for me personally is the time when I can put down a deposit for EPIC-S.

Thanks,
Nikhil
