  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

At this point I just wish that this prince increase doesn't mean that the EPIC "Lite" brain costs as much as a RED One did.

I can understand a price increase of 1 or 2 K, but doubling the price of the camera overnight after people have following it closely and very hopefuly is just plain... mean.

My last hope is that a basic working kit is around 12K.

Anything more than that and "Epic Lite" is going to be the RED One 2, meaning a camera that most rent, and only very few can afford.

So get real if the epic light cuts the feet from the value of an old R1 so what, a new product a new price a new market that's life.

It better!

Anything else would be a major strategic mistake on RED's part, IMHO. Yes, RED supports the initial set of buyers in a way that makes corporate history, but that favor is returned with the discounts and reservation priority on the Epic, isn't that right? It doesn't continue forever (I hope). Otherwise, what do you make of people like me who were not buyers of RED ONE for n number of reasons, but are ardent supporters and future customers of the RED 'transform the marketplace' company?

I agree with Jesper the market is changing once again, hey remember VHS and SVHS then digital, that was only 12 years ago, its just happening again, so jump aboard or be left behind, ment in the nicest possible way.

Jesper, Copenhagen is a great city, my first visit there this year, loved it.

Hi Andrew

It's grim up North! We have about 7 inches of snow and I'm housebound hence I have time to hang out on the site

How are you liking the EX1? It's a great little camera and a real work horse.

Best wishes

Scott

Hi Scott

So there's an up side to the snow :) we got hit really bad last December here in basingstoke 2000 cars stranded, you know when its bad when the new crews arrive lol

Got a really nice profile set up for the EX1R looks flat in camera and timeline but once graded springs to life and looks fab.

Looking forward to raw as l grade all my shots.

Heh heh... lots of crap on EPIC Light.

How about EPIC-A (the old Scarlet S35), the big brother EPIC-X and the machined monster EPIC-M?

Jim

I'm not wild about it. I would suggest you look at it like Car Companies.

There is:

GM (RED)
Chevy (EPIC)
Volt (Actual Camera Model name)

So ALL of these cameras are the RED EPIC series. Now each one gets it's own cool name.

The Full S35 Epic: "Titanium"
The S35 (Scarlet): "Matrix"
Fixed Lens: "Bond"

So three models:

EPIC Titanium (Full s35 model)
EPIC Matrix (S35 scarlet)
EPIC Bond (Fixed Lens)

My suggestions. It also matches the RED ONE since that was the first camera out.

Oh, one more thing.. The handbuilt Epics.. That's easy:
EPIC "TITANIUM" Special Edition

I know you do not have time for a new body, but I would suggest a cool plate where the SSD Drive is that has the EPIC Special Editition on it, and the number. It may be a collector's item one of these days.

Heh heh... lots of crap on EPIC Light.

How about EPIC-A (the old Scarlet S35), the big brother EPIC-X and the machined monster EPIC-M?

Jim

If you're really rethinking the naming, how about EPIC-S (the old Scarlet S35), the EPIC-X we all know and love and the machined EPIC-M?

Your dream is not thrown out of the window because of the name change. It's not thrown out of the window at all, you just have to work a little harder and longer to get there, like we all did.
Really? No dream is totally unconditional. If Scarlet S35/Epic Whatever rose in price to $150,000, would you say, "You're dream isn't dead. Just work 20 times as long or 20 times as hard, or take out a second mortgage on your house"? When will these price hikes end?

Besides, there were new features added, not just a name change.
Other than HDRx, what's been added? Jim has said that Epic X will have higher data and frame rates than Epic [insert new suffix here], which was already clear from the old design.

It didn't make sense to price Scarlet S35 with 80% of the features of Epic at $20k less.
And it would be cynical to slap on an Epic moniker and nearly double the price without at least doubling the feature set, not with the still-hurting economy and the more real competitive threat from other manufacturers. If the 80% price difference bothers you, how about suggesting Red lower the price of Epic X a little?

I personally applaud this move, it made sense from the start and it makes even more sense now.
I applaud the name change. I applaud adding HDRx to the former Scarlet S35 for an additional $1,000. I don't applaud any price increases that aren't justified by commensurate improvements in the camera.

I know Jim said he wouldn't tolerate criticism regarding prices, especially now that Epic and Scarlet are now targeted at pros only. I don't care.

Considering your S35 camera is now going to be called EPIC, thus putting you in the same ballpark as the people about to drop $58,000 on the EPIC-M... you should be laughing about the price issue. Just think about how much more legit/lucrative renting your Camera out will be when it's called EPIC LT vs. Scarlet S35
I believed in Santa Claus till yesterday. Not anymore, but I'd like to.

No matter what we do... there will be unhappy people. As long as everyone understands that we really are trying to push the industry along and deliver meaningful cameras with the most capability at the best price possible, I can live with some disappointment out there.

Jim

I can't imagine how you could ever make all of the people on this forum happy. We come from such different worlds of experience. Some are working on projects that are able to afford full camera departments, cranes, Master Primes, etc. Some are ready to move up from HVX cameras and 7Ds.

For some of us who have been doing this for a long time, Epic-X is more camera than we could ever have dreamed of owning. For the price of an S-16 film camera, we can have an S-35 5K 120 fps dream that will go to 250 fps or so at 2K, and all that with up to 18 stops of DR in a package I can hold all day.

I worked half my life to be able to afford an Arri SR2 and a set of Zeiss primes. The Epic-X I will own in a few months promises to be more camera than I ever imagined I would own. To me, all the RED cameras represent an astonishing opportunity to own or use imaging technology that, just a few years ago, would have been completely out of reach for most of the people on this forum. But if you've only known EX-3s or HVXs or 7Ds, and the rent-only world of $100K+ cameras has never been part of your experience, then all this has to look very different.

You're doing the right things, Jim. Its not always a smooth ride (for either you or us) but I for one am glad you're not listening to some focus group before you make your decisions.

How about just Epic for the light version and Epic-X for the high performance version?
David, I seem to recall that the Epic X designation was meant to denote the Stage 2 and Stage 3 versions. Stage 3.5 and Stage 4 types would simply be known as Epic.

Of course, things change.

I believed in Santa Claus till yesterday. Not anymore, but I'd like to.
Congratulations for your transference to reality. Not as much fun as living in a fantasy world, but in the end, potentially much more rewarding.
