  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

Just had to chip in. Not that naming is nearly as important than what lays inside the beast. Epic LT (for light / lite) is the best so far to my opinion. Epic-M for machined is a bit confusing considering the previous sensors M and MX but since we are talking about only a handful of those, it hardly matters.

Did I understand correctly from one post that HDRx has been removed from Sc... Epic-LT? Or am I just confused?

What comes to pricing it hardly matters considering what an awesome product all the new cameras will be and considering the prices of the competition.

That and I have a flawless plan to finance whichever system feels right. 1000d for flights and accommodation to Las Vegas - 5k on roulette -> Red -> Red -> Red = 40k in the bank. Simple right?

Red1. Epic Series, Scarlet... great names with marketing clarity.
There will surely be a tremendously huge market for the 2/3 version.
Imagine a commercial about the Scarlet ( or light?) in the spirit of the new commercial for the Canon ie: " this commercial was shot with it" That style of marketing lights the passions of buyers and potential film makers. Isn't that how the Red dream began? It was Jarred's articles back with the DVX that also lit thousands of film-passions (CL)

I like the silly names. I’m not buying a camera based on its name; I’m buying it based on its specs and price. And as I do with all purchases, I’ll compare those specs to all other products in its price range. Call it whatever you want RED! But if I can, I’ll take my EPIC Jr. with a James Brown style REC button, because that feature alone will sell me. I mean, it’s just funny that this whole thread is about the thing’s name.

I must be strange but I like Epic Light. I have a feeling this is what it will be referred to as no matter what you name it. It just seems to make sense.
I would really avoid A, X, M names. Having M and MX Red Ones seems to confuse clients enough. LT might be an OK compromise.

Or just go Prince on it and don't call it anything, we'll just refer to it as "The Camera Formerly Known as Scarlet S35" or TCFKS-S35. Almost has a Sony ring to it... :)

For what it's worth

Epic and Epic X

The machined doesn't really need a name.....those that own one will know it, and probably everyone who handles one too......but if a differentiator is needed, tag on 'Ltd' or 'LE' to the X.

Little RED Corvette… EPIC-LRC

I'll second that.

Epic and Epic X (or maybe Extreme) sounds good.

"Light" is more appropriated for 1080P cameras...

My thinking too.

EPIC (Standard EPIC) formerly Scarlet S35.

EPIC-X (Expanded EPIC).

EPIC-LTD (Limited Production, hand machined and assembled body and select accessories, signed by Jim Jannard) which is now the Pre-Production EPIC-M.

IF the Epic Light comes as a complete Package like the Fixed Scarlet for aprox 12K then I will be happy, any more and I'm afraid the dream is over for me.

12k absolute max 14k (absolute max 15k with evf) otherwise I am screwed. :( it would suck seriously after all this wait to see the dream get thrown out of the window cause of a name change. and since i have the glass 2/3rd is not an option :(

Jim

I think this makes complete sense. The Scarlet S35 was just way too close to Epic and totally confused your offering. I totally applaud your decision!

Now what's the price going to be on Epic light? I think $14000 would be a good starting point - half the cost of Epic X. Any thoughts?

Best wishes

Scott

Another thought about differentiating the Scarlet and Epic range - If it was me, then I would lock Scarlet at 1080 resolution and aim it squarely at the TV/Broadcast market where there HD will be the norm for many years to come.

This leaves Epic the clear choice for higher end projects where it clearly belongs. I just never quite understood RED's thinking in making the Scarlet so similar to Epic.

We're all having a little fun over naming, no harm in that and of course it will be Jim who decides in the end, but on a serious note I think this latest revision to the plan is a very good one. Congratulations to Jim and all at RED for getting so close to an EPIC release, the next couple of weeks should be very interesting as more information gets posted.

How about just Epic for the light version and Epic-X for the high performance version?
