  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Dragon Upgrades Begin.

awe crap. Looks like this means there will be no dragon for me. Saving up for an Scarlet to Epic has been taking too long as it is and looks like now after that step it is not cost effective to go to dragon after dec 1st. Really wish I had the funds to buy a battle tested dragon when they were unleashed. Damnit!

Just in time for my epic short film, "The Yeshua Answer"! Stars align, worlds collide, what is was meant to be. Now lets execute.

Dragon Sensor upgrades is going to go up on December 1st to $12,500.

All was great, new announcements, new show gear, then I read the last line...
which also kept waking me up all night! :) It's a helluva bump, what like 30%
What gives? supplier costs, higher than expected sensor expense?
I kinda wish it would'a happened in 2015 where I could tap into next years' budget. December is too close.
Bummed :sad::sad:

Yeah, the price increase is a bit of a jump and unfortunately will hurt folks like me who can't afford it yet. Not sure how raising the prices helps anyone other then Red. It's not gonna make those who were on the fence to figure it out (since it's been years of advertising and waiting to get to this point). Guess somewhere the price 'redefine' is justified.

I've been on the fence on the whole upgrade, considering the upgrade cost more than the initial camera, and battle tested Scarlet Dragons sold for less than the upgrade cost December 1st, just doesn't make sense. I'm even further on the fence now.

If you haven't shot on it, try it. Your love dragon, it's a blast shooting on it.

Great news RED!

Not so sure about the price-increase, but if you don't see a way around it there is probably none. Thanks telling us about it right now, i really appreciate that.

I think for those concerned about the price increase. Another route to consider is sell your cam. brian, right now and then buy a new dragon brain.

Do the maths on the change over price, you may be surprised, that's why so many are 4 sale right now ; )

Alternately hang back a couple of days before the official closing of the 9.5k upgrade price then order. You will be on the tail end of the list, bumping the day you have to pay till well into next year.

A Scarlet Dragon is a much more capable camera than a Scarlet MX. 5k at 60fps vs. 4k at 30fps, customizable OLPF, and a far superior sensor. It's a no brainer for me. That said, my path to Dragon was to sell my Scarlet MX and put the money towards a BT Dragon.

Seems like a move to try and force people into doing the upgrade sooner...

I was getting ready to, but this is more of a deterrent than encouragement to be honest. I'm trying to buy a house as well.

This seems like something RED may want to re-consider, can't see to many people being enthusiastic about it. Totally understand if they have to cover costs. They already rose the price once from $6,000 or whatever it was to $9,500. Whats with the jump this time?

It's a very difficult choice especially considering the announcement of this new FS7 from Sony. I can purchase an entirely new camera for less than the price of my "upgrade" and keep my Scarlet, or just sell my whole package and get the FS7. Still very much on the fence.

You have to initiate (pay for) the upgrade before 12/1 else you'll owe $12.5K when your spot in line is up.

That's my reasoning as well. Can't see myself setting aside that much dough with the options that are out there and that will be out there in a year's time. As much as I wish and hope, I still can't afford to be a bleeding edge guy.

I think its my fault, my buddy and I have two upgrades we've been dragging our feet on doing, so sorry guys I am to blame for this one lmfao...

No but seriously I think I am going to upgrade another one before then, if not both...Problem is the rental house likes one of the MXs and says everyone else is already upgrading and that I am providing them much needed MX legacy support so hell if I know what to do with that one...

...the price for all Dragon Sensor upgrades is going to go up on December 1st to $12,500.

Dearest Jarred.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say 2 1/2 months is fairly short notice for many Scarlet owners who definitely want the Dragon upgrade but need to make some things happen in the finance department first.

There are those who are still undecided about Dragon, question its superiority over MX, balk at the $9.5K upgrade price or feel it's not worth it. I realize how that might be frustrating for you but it kinda seems like the Dec. 1st cutoff was made primarily with them in mind. The short notice feels like a punishment and/or ultimatum of some kind.

Yes, it'll force a few stragglers to finally pull the trigger (possibly myself included) but my gut is telling me it's too hasty.

Perhaps you think the people who appreciate Dragon for the achievement it is and are serious about owning it have already ordered it. I can see that.

However, the short notice could be interpreted as everyone else can suck it if they can't see what an achievement Dragon is.

Some of us know we want it but haven't quite gotten enough dough together yet.

I have no problem with the Dec. 1st cutoff. I just wish I had known about it back in June.

For what I want out of a digital cinema camera, Dragon is the one to beat. Trust me, if I felt one of the less expensive options were up to the task (even the ones announced today), I would've sold my Scarlet and gone that route, especially since I could've used the money.

If you have to raise the price, then raise the price.

But, if it's at all possible, please consider extending the generosity to, say, March 1, 2015 and give people a chance to try to get their money right. It'll give them a clear goal to set for themselves in a timeframe that doesn't make them feel like their backs are against the wall.

@ Doug.
I stand corrected about the upgrade payment......are you sure ? Because I thought with Epic upgrades you went on the list & then they notified you your number was due, then you paid.

@ Noel
from my very limited understanding of the new Sony cam. the price is up around 15K for fully optioned 4K and thats what you can do right now with MX scarlet. Plus Pre price update if you already own all the "DMSC extras" this makes a dragon upgrade cheaper and you are shooting 5K. If that makes sense.

All DRAGON upgrades move to $12,500 USD. If you have an existing order in the system and have not started the upgrade process by Dec 1, goes up to that price.

Started means you have placed your order and have paid the upgrade fee.

Always can cancel, yes, as long as order processing has not begun (ie, your camera half open on a bench).

Hey Mike- Brent was pretty clear on it so it appears you must pay on or before 11/30. This applies to Dragon only- there hasn't been clarification on Scarlet to Epic MX which to me means that it will remain at $9.5K

If you were thinking of buying a new Epic X, I would strongly recommend waiting until 12/1 if you can. I think a pricing re-alignment is coming by 12/1 since the upgrade process will probably be completed in order to make room for Epic X Dragon brains in the store.

I highly doubt Epic X Dragon will be priced higher than Epic M Dragon (Epic X Dragon w/ upgrade @ 17.5 + 12.5 = 30 vs. Epic M Dragon @ 29K)

The Sony cam is supposed to be in the 8k range with internal 10 bit 4.2.2 4k XAVC at up to 60fps. 180fps for 1080p.
So you have a fully optioned 4k, plus shoulder mount, grip and a oled viewfinder for about 8k.
You can add 2k for the unit that sends out raw and another 2k for an odissey Q7.
Thats 12k for 4k raw and 8k for 4k xavc.
Not advertising, just to inform you, really.
Still love the Scarlet.
Cheers

Where are you getting 15K? Everything I've read to this point has said $8K and only one model.
