  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Deal of a Lifetime

I was thinking about this shoot last night and I'd like to ask were the cameras synced? Were they triggered via wireless? Or poke and go?

Just in case something weird comes up in the future :)

Getting a RED camera without a touchscreen is like going to a party without your pants on. Sure, you can hide behind planters and distract folks with clever jokes, but eventually people will notice. It's a bag if hurt.... I recommend a side handle at minimum.

Is that why you are always joking around on set, and hiding behind the crank-o-vator?

I do agree - the touchscreen does make the whole operating the camera thing soooo much easier. It may not always be attached, but when it is...

This deal was too good to pass up. We are now joining the red owner team!!! Our copters are already set up to carry epic's, so this will be a direct bolt on. Cant wait to start sharing some footage.

red already had my money for a scarlet....man, am i glad i hadn't made up my mind about accessories, mounts,....getting one of these this week...

Not wanting to sound dumb but - how much do you need to change on the camera during a shoot day?
Res, FPS, Shutter?
How many controls does it take?

(man ap lenses)

The histo would go to my SMallHD right?

And if the touchscreen is stuffed inside a deep hood it doesnt strike me as ergonomic to use it.
My minimal experience with Scarlet I could not see anything on the screen (midday sun) - it needs a hood

Over one of my shoot days - I'll switch Shutter and FPS 5 or 6 times. I have the 5" touch + side handle + redmote + EVF, so I'm covered with options… but I still find the touch to be the easiest & fastest control surface. I also have the luxury of having a 17" TVLogic monitor beside me all day as well.

I guess, regardless of monitor, the image ought to be 1:1. So yes to all the functions except for the touch, of course.

But what about resolution? Can Scarlet deliver a "high res" image via HDMI to the DP6s 1280x800? It should at least be able to deliver the 9" PRO monitor resolution and that is pretty close...

Does anyone know this?

I use a SmallHD DP-6 full time on my Scarlet, have never once had a touch screen in six months of shooting. Have both the Side Handle and REDMote, though very recently decided to try the next few shoots without the Side Handle (jury's still out on that one.) DP6 works great on both HD-SDI and HDMI, though I favor SDI for obvious reasons. You do have to be careful about accidentally turning off the signal to the external monitors, but I made sure to set up two of my REDMote slots to control the output mode for HD-SDI and HDMI so that I can always cycle through the modes if I do something bad. But honestly, in those same six months of shooting, it's only bitten me once, and I was still able to fix it because of the REDMote set up I mentioned. I've certainly thought about the touch screen, I think some of the features would be nice, especially for any information that needs to be typed into menus, as well as touch focusing with electronic Canon glass, but at the end of the day $1600 is a lot of money for what is essentially redundancy.

You get exactly what you would see on the 5" RED, except of course that the SmallHD panel is much higher res. Also, using the SmallHD's firmware to post process the incoming signal, you can set up crop/zoom/pan&scan to get a clean image without tweaking anything in the Scarlet menus and worrying about losing the overlay feed. This isn't a great picture, but the best I have handy at the moment: https://twitter.com/harrylipnick/status/244955579255234560/photo/1/large

Hope that helps.

great pic

the actual image is quite small, can you set the DP6 to 'zoom in on it' (or the Scarlet to)

it would seem to be good to switch to full frame once you are set?

also is there a 1:1 'focus check' mode either while rolling or before?

Thanks. Yes, you can set the DP-6 to zoom in on it. There's an array of different ways to process the image in the SmallHD's firmware. They have some great short tutorials on their website. Last I looked, the videos they have are more geared to the DSLR shooter, but you'll get the idea. Same process, just different numbers. My workflow generally is to set up frame guides in the Scarlet (1.85, 95% of 4K on the last project for example) and then set a preset in the SmallHD during prep to match those guides, and crop whatever's outside of them, which effectively makes the image larger, because you're zooming past and cropping the RED menus. The nice part though is that you're still working from the 1080 SDI/HDMI signal, so you're really not losing any resolution since the panel is 720. Once you've set it up, it's a twist and a click of the DP6 control wheel and you're in business.

As far as 1:1, you have it in the Scarlet (though you can't do that while rolling with any monitor) as well as a 1:1 in the SmallHD, though you'd have to assign one of your two user buttons to get to it quickly. I personally never use that during a roll, so please don't take my opinion that it would work perfectly.

Also as a side note, I've heard some people have issue with delay in their Scarlet/Epic SDI feed. Just want to state unequivocally that, at least for me, this has not been the case and I've had no problem using a non-red monitor as my main. That said, if you don't already own the DP-6, I'm not sure whether or not I'd say to go for it. The obvious bonuses are higher-res, slightly bigger screen, and not locked into the RED system. Benefits to the RED touch are touch-screen, camera powered. So it's a toss up, but for me since I already owned the SmallHD, it was a no brainer.
Best,

-Harry

So what your saying is, there are going to by another 75 wondering how are we going to upgrade to a Epic. BUYER BEWARE, SCARLETS ARE A GATEWAY DRUG TO EPICS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Really? i'm going backward then. I already have 3 Epics and I just picked up a Scarlet. ;-)
