  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

There is a very minor difference in weight... Epic has some more chips inside it and a little larger of a top grill... but we are talking Grams.

All mounts are interchangeable between Epic and Scarlet. The Aluminum Canon mount however has different thermal expansion characteristics ( if that matters to you, auto focus usually corrects most of that ) and all initial stock of Aluminum Canon mounts will obviously be going to Scarlet Canon Mount Camera orders.

I've read the entire thread + FAQ, and I still can't find this question answered: is there any difference in weight between SCARLET-X and EPIC?

Also - will I be able to pull a SCARLET Canon mount from the box and also run it on my EPIC? I'm assuming this is a yes, but would like to know for sure. I'm still waiting on a back-ordered Canon mount, but, for the price difference, it might make more sense to just buy the whole camera!

Excellent work, RED. Breathtaking, really. You have walloped this industry right between the eyes. A knock-out punch.

Made in America, easy to buy.

Jim said exactly the same... looking for where I got that, but I just read it.

(timing is everything... Jarred answered a couple of seconds sooner... look three posts above)

Jim or Jarred said no earlier. My guess is that is a non-scientific 'no', if you put them on scales, there will be a couple of grams between them, likely.

LOL. You should search, but I think the answer was yes, fully interchangeable - the question was asked and answered before.

Just to confirm, for the moment the camera is essentially not an S35 sized sensor for video... as there is no option yet to shoot more than 12 fps at 5K? And the camera will window when it shoots 4K, thus not using the full sensor, correct? So right now it's only S35 when shooting stills?

That should make that one guy who wanted the original 2/3" design happy, who doesn't like the shallow DOF! The dog guy. :)

3:09AM and still at work. Hope Jim put you on salary!

Thanks, Jarred, that was faster than a speeding bullet - you guys must be overloaded on adrenalin tonight!

Yes it is cropped when you go down in resolution. That is how you can achieve higher frame rates with the Scarlet's 50Mb/s bandwidth.

Dragon is incredible... We really are just getting started. Think about how much of an improvement the MX sensor was over our first sensor.. and that was when we had no idea what we were doing :)

Scarlet will have firmware updates just like our other cameras and we always try to squeeze as much as possible as we can as we improve the code. That's not a Yes, but not a No.

Scarlet supports +48V @10mA Phantom power on each channel. Just not enabled in the software yet.

The only things that wont work on Scarlet is the bottom right Tactical side plate for EPIC.. as there is no ribs there. Everything else is the same mechanical dimensions ( minus the top grill is different )

Ask 5 different people and they will all have different numbers between 13 and 14 stops... We test 13.5

with the module(s) that have EVF/LCD ports you can.

Don't see why they wouldn't.. except i don't know if the lenses they announced tonight have autofocus. I was told the new Canon Movie camera with Canon mount does not support Autofocus?

Final Color.

Thanks for your amazing camera and all the power it's gonna bring me. And thanks for hopefully answering my questions!

WOW. That is costumer service right there. Thank you so much Jarred for your quick response.

1) Sounds fair on cropping, but someone mentioned to me that the 5K sensor is actually bigger than S35, and so the 4K crop is actually about right on for Super35. Can you confirm that?
2) Dragon sounds INCREDIBLE. Can't wait.
3) Sounds fair to wait and see on Anamorphic too. I'm just asking for measly frame guides (as meta data too preferably) - I'm happy to shoot in non-anamorphic aspect and crop in post for most of the work I do.
4) Hooray on Phantom power! Not clear on one thing though (lack of audio experience here) - does that power pass through the XLR adapters for Epic (like Wooden Camera's)?
5) Great to hear on dimensions. So I should assume that the RED store is not totally correct? Last time I checked the it said the assault plate and the backpack were NOT compatible with Scarlet (a lil while ago).
7) Yay! Looking forward to that.
8) Apparently it does not - I think they're new lenses are manual only - which is what I was considering anyway (or maybe Zeiss instead)

Thanks again for all your help!

I'm another long time follower of RED, since well before the RED ONE was released. I'm merely a hobbyist who enjoys taking stills and video. The fixed scarlet was pretty damn awesome, though the 2/3 sensor was probably a minor set back given that for what I want it for, the shallow DOF of a S35 sensor would suit me more. The thing I liked the most about the original Scarlet was the frame-rate. 120fps at 3k made purchasing it so much more justifiable as all of sudden it's practical applications were substantially increased.

For the hobbyist or indie film maker, the Scarlet X is obviously out of our price range, and I know RED's aware of that, but I just wanted to help add numbers to the vote for a slightly lower-end RED. The Scarlet X is definitely aimed at those who make money from what they use it for, and that's unfortunate.

All great news! congrats to Jim and the Red team! But now the head spinning begins. Whilst I certainly want a Scarlet In the arsenal I also want a stage 3 Epic X and a set of RPPs - I can afford right now to do 2 out of 3, so it becomes important to know the timing of the Epic-X program. Any help please?

Best,
Peter

I'm priced out of this camera as well, and I was looking forward to it and posting since near the beginning of Scarletuser.com ...

Depends on how much you are nitpicking, but for FoV, DoF yes it is pretty much S35.

S35 film is 24.89 mm wide, 5K MX is 30mm wide, 4K windowed is 22.12mm wide. That 2,8 mm is not going to affect your field of view all that much.

So DSMC is incredible, modular blows me away. Surely some/most of the current parts will work on the next generation Red? When we're shooting 28k 9000fps raisin box style? Thoughts?

I have ordered scarlet x with pl ti mount but I also wish to have extra Al CANON EF MOUNT. how much it is? how can I order it? thanks

I very much like what I see.. gorgeous.... BUT!

I was looking forward to two 3K-Scarlets in a little 3D Mirror-RIg................ 2/3 would have been perfect....
Sure that the little 3k one won't come back at any time....

Thanks for that info Pascal - that was something I was wondering and struggling with. Glad to hear that 4K on the Scarlet will be more or less Super35 DoF and FoV.

No 8X Fixed. We had terminal issues with the lens. If you are sad, just think about us. All those development dollars down the drain.

Jim

While I am also very sad in deed, just like Thosuands of others and RED... I remain HONORED that I had the Glorious chance to play with the Fix SCARLET in San Francisco, and will charish those memories in History...

But I also remain BLOWN AWAY by what the SCARLET X has Grown up to become, and was so happy to finally receive the Email confirmation of my order for 2 SCARLET Ti...!!

I mean... WOW, no one could absolutely ask more, so much so that in fact I am hearing already that some one thinks the SCARLET X offers so much and that is so cheap for what it offers that makes the EPIC a no so good deal...

I say, the SCARLET X is an AMAZING deal, to call it DEAL of the CENTURY, will make it the UNDERSTATEMENT of the CENTURY... But EPIC is an other DEAL of the CENTURY all together...

GO SHOOT EPIC 120fps @ 5K, then return to me with your tough!!

RED once again has ROCKED the Industry... ;)

Your post is killing me. I'm on the fence right now... and those words are... brilliant. I have my details filled in the purchase form, and I literally don't have enough money yet to afford the 14k. But I know I could get it. Won't be easy. But I could.

Who wants to push me?

Red One does:
- 120fps @2K
- 60fps @ 3k
- built in XLR inputs (4 channels)
- 3 HD-SDI outputs
- 4.5k mode

probably forgetting other things.

But Scarlet is going to be a killer camera.

Exactly! It's really wonderful how Scarlet fits in the family, not displacing the R1, but complementing it and Epic. All three are killer cameras, still!
