  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet (and shipping) announcement Nov. 3rd...

Man this is painful, now I have an idea of what Epic-X owners had to go through. Waiting is no fun especially when u don't have a camera to shoot on :-\ gonna have to borrow.

Tic Toc

If I was a gambling man I would predict the surprise will be a 4K Scarlet Fixed. I read a report that 2/3 sensors are not in mainstream production anymore and is not aligned with Red's bread and butter. The current chassis would support a larger sensor, Canon would shit themselves, and Red would have a little more economy of scale in production. That would explain Jim's responses on the Epic S. $50 bucks - any takers?

I'll take you up on that $50. There will be 2 Scarlets: A 3k fixed lens model for $4750, and a PL mount 4k body for $7500.

It said in my horoscope that Scarlet will be:

Interchangable mount
S35 - 5K - 1-30 fps, no HDRx
windowded 2/3" - 3k - 1-120fps, HDRx upto 60p
I hope you're wrong about 5K not having HDRx. That would not be the camera I wanted, and a step backward for those who were interested in Epic-S.

I'm thinking it might be 4k, but not 5k. Smaller than Epic sensor. Somewhere in the m4/3-APSc size range up to maybe 22mm wide. Epic is 30mm wide. Up to 4k 30fps with HDRx.

Then again it could be 4k at S16mm size, 3k at 2/3" size.

As I said before, 2/3rds (and half inch) is the new consumer format (prosumer). We already have hundred dollar cameras with 1/2.3 inch chips for years now, and full frame is already in use consumer, such as the hg 20.

1/2.3 is considerably smaller than 2/3" HD format. Scarlet 2/3" is 10.1mm wide vs 7.7 for the 1/2.3. Scarlet is larger area than any consumer point and shoot still camera. It is also larger than any under $10k video camcorder except the AF100 and FS100.

A 4k S16mm with HDRx with a very low noise level good low light would be awesome.

I quote Joseph Hutson (who could be called an official now that he is working for REDUCATION) from the What-Changed-Poll-threat:
I didn't vote. I think it's none of the above. Hehe

So I guess, it's not

  • S35 Sensor
  • Same as it has been just at a really good price
  • Package deal that is wayy affordible
  • Interchangeable with a kit lens
  • Who cares I want one!!!
  • 4k
  • 4k with S35

Another interesting observation:

It already did.

On the list an the bottom, there is no EPIC-S mentioned...
How Jim always manages to confuse me :) Exciting 33 days to come!

But it just mentions Scarlet. Might be a line or cameras. Or not.

It definetly won't be a bigger sensor in Scarlet. They would have to change everything including the lens design. And we have seen prototypes. THAT is not going to happen. I thought it might be 4k but then again, changing the sensor's resolution isn't that easy either. BTW What do I know?? :) The minREDstry of magic is unpredictable!!

One thing that should be kept in mind is that RED has planned to release EPIC during NAB. So they had a lot of time to refine even changes in a Scarlet design. If anyone doubts that Scarlet could change - you should also doubt that HDRx could be added to the system. So since nobody seems to doubt that, you should also not doubt in the RED team capability to do other changes. Besides a lot of other things, we were waiting for EPIC and Scarlet until now due to the changes in the strategy caused by the changing market conditions (being in the early prototyping stages or much later in the process). Once the prejudice are left beside, Scarlet can be a lot of things.
RED team is capable of any of the listed options - it's just a question of what was decided to be the best thing to do.

OBSOLESCENCE OBSOLETE!

It must be considered that the large sensor cameras AF101 and FS100 have been huge successes in sales despite only recording to AVCHD, the FS100 gives fab results for 1080HD, l got one in June as soon as they were out, got rid of my Canon 305 a great camera but very poor for low light situations and only a 1/3 sensor, very pleased with the FS100 though a little plastic it does the job, but the S35 will be my cup of tea, originally the fixed lens scarlet, but to be honest the larger sensor is the way forward, you can do deep focus or very shallow, the best of both worlds. The world has moved on and l think RED knows this.

These changes have been longer in the works than most people think. Jim and crew knew what they were doing. The roadmap changed some time ago. I saw this writing on the wall back in early spring. I really don't think Red is going to release a 3K camera. I think Jim made this clear way back then but in a cryptic manner, at least that is how I read it at the time. I posted this idea then but it got ignored, then deleted. I understand why as Jim eluded to in a recent post saying that Canon will release something based on where they think Red is going. "that changed a long time ago" I think were his words. I could be wrong but I will welcome the changes if I am correct.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the mice-type at the bottom of the page. I cut and pasted from a comp I did over a year ago. It has REDSPACE in there instead of REDgamma. I'll fix it when I have some time.

When pressed about the absence of the Epic-S from Red's new roadmap, Jim Jannard said, "The camera you want is at the end of the year." Since most who were interested in the the Epic-S will probably not be interested in a 2/3-inch, maximally 3K camera, there will then have to be another S35 camera, as yet announced, released -- or at least announced -- by the end of the year. Seems unlikely.

I'd try not to guess... we just might change our minds on everything Nov. 2nd. :-)
