  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet (and shipping) announcement Nov. 3rd...

Yes Jeff, I knew that. I always thought you could slam 'em on a interchangeable. But it sounded like the lenses suddently JUST NOW appeared as being compatible with the Scarlet - thus indicating that there might be coming a non-fixed Scarlet ;) That's what I meant by "interesting?" :)

Actually, Jarred said just a month or two ago that the lens mounting plates for Epic and Scarlet were different. (Edit - Thanks, Kyle for posting the quotes) He said Scarlet mounts were different in x, y and z dimensions. The Scarlet body definitely is narrower. In that same post Jarred said the back focal depth on Scarlet was much shorter. So Jarred's latest post that they use the same mounts could be extremely significant IF, by "mounts" he meant lens mounting plates. That would mean a pretty major redesign occurred. If he just meant that PL, Nikon and Canon mounts will be available for both Scarlet and Epic (with different mounting plates for Scarlet and Epic lines) then yeah, nothing new. The one thing I think you can safely read into Jarred's mount comment is that the Scarlet Interchangeable is alive and well.

nice!

For S-3d work, narrower form factor would be very handy. A shorter more accessible back focal distance means you can use non-retrofocal lenses (within reason) that have very low (radial distortion) Biogon/symmetrical lens arrangement. This enables very practical and high precision s-3d (potentially). Zeiss Ikon, Leica and some Schneider’s in the non-retrofocal vein.

So normally I was not THAT super interested in Scarlet, but now it seems to be moving with the times and moving way beyond normally expected capability. 4k is meaningful (however you might define it), the fact that there is a DSMC “concept” is super meaningful; killer price point... what can you say apart from “THANKS!”.

This has to be absolutely unprecedented in terms of “buying” modality. I.e. the buyer pulls the trigger to buy from only having learnt what the spec of the item was a few seconds before and will happily transfer in some cases several or many tens of thousands of dollars.

That does seem a shade implausible ... for any company other than RED!

I seem to remember the EPIC-M announcement was treated with a stampede of people begging RED to accept their money, and that was for a $58,000 item that was a total surprise to RED's customer base.

In the end, more than 1,200 EPIC-Ms have been sold, which I believe was considerably more than projected demand.

RED customers have a lot of warning on the Scarlet so I think it's very likely that a flood of orders will stream in. Even if Scarlet was exactly as advertised and shown a few months ago, I'm confident demand is there. And of course we know it will be dramatically improved by the time it's released.

It will be announced that Scarlet is going to be released and shipped in 3 years.
But this date can be taken seriously! *cough*

Nov 3rd?
This is the same date as Canon will reveal their new 4k cam.

They are synchronizing release dates so Canon has no time to respond to their announcements. Pretty simple.

If RED says something will be released in a year, it's quite likely to take three. But if they say something will be released in a month - and they have been saying "ordering immediately" and "delivery by the end of the year" - I believe them. They have the factory, they have the production resources, and they are ready.

Of course now that you've produced such a rude declaration with a rude picture, it may well take them three years to ship your Scarlet, but that's another issue entirely!

I will buy a Scarlet and an Epic when its possible either way.
Red is the present and future standard.
I personally don't care if it comes out Nov. 3rd 2011 or next year.
Epic is here, Red One MX is here and still no slouch.

Currently devising a plan for one of them.
Competitors can do whatever.
Its too late, no one can touch RAW, available now. (Where's the competition?)
Redcine X Pro (free) available now. ; ) (Where's the competition?)
Not too mention 5K, 4K, HDRx. (Already) (Where's the competition?)

Competition is too late.
Red has 5 years and a whole company designed around high resolution.
NO ONE can compete with Experience, and No one is AS experienced with High Res Raw Cameras than Red.

Accept it.

Its already done.

These are Fun Times!!

No one is required to agree with my comments.
The only person that I know, who is required to own Red Cameras is, Myself.

I see lots of speculations about Red's and Canon's announcement to be the same like a team up between the 2 brands. Some people over the internet are thinking that Red could do it to sell the SCarlet to a larger audience. While I don't think Red needs to do it that way, I think it is not the worst remour I came accross.

Any idea about that kind of stuff folks ?

I don't think that's going happen.

Jim himself said it will be a head to head competition.

There was a "Scarlet-S35" and a "Scarlet-FF35" as well. However, the Scarlet-S35 was renamed to EPIC-S. It's supposed to ship once EPIC-X backorders are fulfilled and heavy demand subsides, so I would guesstimate sometime early next year.
Epic-S was conspicuously absent from Jim Jannard's recent roadmap. When pressed about it, he responded, "The camera you want is later this year." There has therefore been speculation that there will be an S35 Scarlet to replace the Epic-S.

He also made a couple of cryptic remarks to the effect that what seemed like a good idea three years now doesn't look so good, given Red's current vision, and will be changed. That can only refer to 2/3-inch Scarlet because Red has already released Epic (which was also announced three years ago). What specifically is no longer a good idea -- the fixed lens, the 3K maximal resolution, or the 2/3-inch format -- is unclear.

Out of touch

Out of touch

I go to Sydney Australia for the week and the world begins to change. But I did get to go to the Gatsby stage so I guess that makes up for it.

Who can say... All things subject to change and all that. I'm positive they will have an S35 camera that will be lower cost (at the expense of features and capability) compared to the EPIC-X/M. Not sure if it matters what they call it. Who knows, there may end up being more than one of those, or maybe not. I'm not sure if more than one is warranted or needed.

Anyway, I've learned from all my time here that it's best to not read too far into little details like that or try to analyze Jim's posts. Most of the time when people (including myself) try to do just that, the results are usually error. He likes to tease and get people excited, but he's rarely cryptic. There's a difference between being cryptic and simply withholding details until he's ready.

Rest Assured Brethren.

All will be revealed November 3rd.

Anticipation and Excitment is building!

So true, its a long time ago that i was so excited about a new toy, can't even remember what it was. Its really like being a little boy again, waiting for Santa (Jim) to bring the most amazing gift i can imagine. Its like having 3 times xmas this year, 3rd november announcing and ordering, then getting the parcel from RED and then a classic xmas with the family. ;)

Finally good news! 2/3 is broadcast standart... but... let's see what happens... i prefer something more aps-c sized or s35... nice date. 2 days later... my birthday! :)

Thanks Jarek. I thought we had less than 36 days until I clicked your link.

Now I know exactly how many days and I will be counting down in my head. :(

No problem!

Are we all seeing the same thing? Here at 8:30pm EST it reads: 36 days, 00 hours, 30 min , 00 sec.
