  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet (and shipping) announcement Nov. 3rd...

I sold my cameras-all 5 of them(Sony EX-1, Sony PD-177, Canon XL-2, Canon EOS-3, Canon 5D) within the last week to be able to order Scarlet upon release. Now I am only left with my iphone4 camera for the moment. I am sure I will not regret this.

Of course you won't, the iPhone 4 is a GREAT camera!

Hey Terry, Just curious: are you going to be ordering a Scarlet on Nov. 3rd? If I remember right you aren't a RED ONE or EPIC owner but I seem to remember you talking about getting a scarlet a long time ago.

Yep

(That is, assuming I am not on the RED "shit list.")

So how does the following sound:

Scarlet S35 body, 5" RED Pro monitor, electronic Canon mount, CF-card module (cards are 600x now, reading 90MB+ writing 87MB), handle and batteries.

$5000

=)

Just need a version of REDcode optimized for CF cards, and this would be the entry version. Easy upgrade to SSD and higher bitrates for TruePros.

I say bring it =)

I don't know if Red is going to go back to the S35 Scarlet.

The whole point of them removing it from the Scarlet line-up in the first place, was it was way too similar to the Epic.

My guess would be a 4k, 2/3rds, SSD Module with 120fps in 2k. Something around their.

Red's goal, which they have definitely succeeded in doing, was to make the industry standard 4k. We now have 4k tvs planning on being released, we have camera companys who are now saying 4k is the way to go instead of 1080p, when they used to bash it, and we have people, who have experienced actual 4k viewing, and never want to go back.

I don't think Red will decide to give us a 3k camera.

But whatever they do, im sure they have a plan behind it and will be looking out for their customers.

RED's target customer is the professional... or those that aspire to be professionals.

There are plenty of other companies that make products for those that want to dabble.

Jim

I'm still very happy with this business stance. There are plenty of companies to choose from if one wants a Prosumer device in order to keep within their budget while still getting some decent quality out of the product. But for those of us who make our entire living off providing the best quality product to our clients, it's important to have the best tool for the job. For me, it's great to have a camera company that isn't okay with "holding features back" or with just going with "good enough" in order to hit a price point. But while at the same time, still getting great value relative to the features offered on said product.

My own personal opinion and guess is that things (Scarlet and Accessories) are going to be much more expensive than people imagine, it's important to understand the value of what you are purchasing and that it's an investment towards the future as well with these modular systems. I wouldn't undervalue the benefit of having 120fps+, HDRX and higher resolution than 1080P (3K+) either. So even if the camera hit the $10,000-$15,000 range (F3's Territory), how could that ever be viewed as a disappointment when it's closest competitors are only offering 1080P 60fps max no hdrx, no raw workflow, and in a larger body for around the same price. Of course none of us have any idea of the changes coming compared to the original specs...

While I would love to see a package deal like that (minus the CF Module, SSD just makes so much more sense), I think this is the kind of unreal expectations Red seems to be referring to. Especially when considering current prices of those accessories on their own. Going off Current Red Store Prices:

5" Red pro Monitor - $1,600
SSD Side Module - $1,500
Canon Mount - $2000
Side Handle - $950
Batteries - $200/each

Those alone amount to more than $5,000 and that is without factoring in the actual Camera itself ;) I'd be drooling as an epic owner to not only get these accessories for cheaper but to get a free camera with them too. Sign me up! hehe

That my good man would be Incredible!
Sadly, If the Scarlet is over $10K I'm going to have to give it a miss. :nonod:

Scarlet should be a sort of Alexa "killer" that means to offer S35mm, 1080p/2K up to 120 fps, playback, HDMI, HD-SDI enabled from a day one, possibility to add 3rd party ProRes recording immediately.

14 stops of DR with HDRx out off the box.

Recording R3D RAW on SSD and compatible with all Epic accessories, titanium PL and Canon mounts, etc,...

That's it simple and easy professional tool that today even J.L. Godard would like it.

I'm guessing, that based off the current Epic-M package that Scarlet will likely have a package or two that will be killer deals. It sounds like Jim and Red really do want to get this camera into the hands of more users.

The technology, market, and price landscapes have changed a bit since Scarlet was first hinted at way back. Which is why I believe they are revisiting how the camera initially was designed as the "other guys" are now making S35 bodies that have and will land in different price brackets.

It's nice to have funtastical speculative conversation, but we do have to be real in terms of what we can truly expect. If you're hoping to see a fully fledged and ready to shoot 4k camera package with accessories at $5k or less I think that's a very lofty expectation. However, depending on S35, 2/3s, or "other" sensors and if we are dealing with 4k, 3k, or the unlikely 2k we could be looking at $8k-$15k for a ready to shoot system. That puts us in the F3 and likely higher end Canon territory. With S35 cameras now hitting those price points (and even lower with the FS100) I'm thinking Red will want to hit around there too and show us some true value for our money.

The odd bit here is if that Red does do this with a S35 sensor and the camera produces above 1080p the F3 will look like an expensive camcorder and the Alexa owners will wonder why they chose blue. This would stun the market, and I really can't express enough, "change everything" for filmmakers everywhere. More so than the DVX, HVX, or HDSLRs ever have. I think my old full HVX package was about $16k after all was said and done the first day it was available. We don't know Canon's hand just yet and that could get interesting, but it seems that the larger manufacturers all like to play in a similar-ish realm with each other.

4k at 120fps in a camera in that range? I don't know about that. I'd love it. But more likely it would be 4k/3k at 60fps and 2k at 120fps. If that comes in a S35 package and an optional EF mount available I'll certainly give Red my money and a freshly baked pie.

The comfort I have in this waiting period is that Red again has a supported raw format and has the success of producing powerful motion picture cameras which the competitors can't even claim. Whatever the final specs are we can expect something good that will be suitable for professional use. We just don't know exactly what or how much just yet.

I don't want to make an appearance on the "list"... but I have to ask, have you used either camera? 13.5 stops and 14.5 stops of native DR respectively... they are beautiful cameras, with good and bads points... as I am sure the Scarlet will be.

Yes to both and I don't disagree. No offense taken either. It's been part of my "job" to stress test gear before feature work. I dig the F3's layout, but the resolution didn't convince me nor did the additional upgrade S-Log path, but I do like the dynamic range. Can't lie about that. That camera was in my personal ownership price point, but I didn't pull the trigger.

I prepped and extensively tested a 3D Alexa rig last year and have worked on their material numerous times this year. First shot straight into the sun btw. It is a good camera. I do feel the Epic-M is more bang for the buck though especially when it comes to pure resolution.

I'm just mentioning the obvious point that if Scarlet produces 3k/4k with or without HDRx on board for sub $16k with a "functional package" that would be considered a game changer in this industry. Nobody can deny that.

Enjoy Nov 3rd all.

I'm glad Jim has changed the policy of announcements and the system they have created is amazing. To all you that will be ordering the scarlet..congratulations.

Unfortunatly I have not been paying attention to the latest updates and never noticed the price hike of the proposed scarlet. The specs (even the old ones) will make it great value, but I just won't be able to afford one now. For two hours yesterday though I thought I would.

Oh well, someday I'll own a Red camera and be part of the family.

Good luck all, I hope the month flies by for you all. Good Luck Jim, what you are doing and what you have already done is incredible. No doubt history will remember November 3rd, 2011. I wish I could be a part of it.

Will Devine :(

There is a possible middle path, not the 30 x 15 5k Epic sensor but a 4k sensor size same as the original R1. A full up loaded version with pro i/o module, battery module, SSD side module and LCD priced out at about $18k same as the original R1. Bare brain somewhere around $6-8k. Same frame rates compression ratios and crop formats as R1 but with next gen sensor, DR, and sensitivity plus HDRx.
This would replace the R1 and hit the original Scarlet S35 target range.

I like the idea of a QuadHD resolution super16mm interchangeable Scarlet, still 3k at 2/3". $5k or so brain under $10k basic package.
Both of these could be made based on current MX generation pixel sizes that would fit their existing sensor fab processes. Neither would be a great leap for Red to produce.

3k it is then! (At least)

We actually are thinking that Scarlet could turn into a 1080P camera... since the "other guys" are saying that 1080P is good enough.

Jim

Great idea.

By "other guys" I assume you mean Steven Soderburgh, who said that anything more than 2k is not needed?

I love the DoF I get with my Red One, but I have never needed 4k, and have been looking forward to the 1080p setting promised for the Epic.
