  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet (and shipping) announcement Nov. 3rd...

Why was I certain, that something would be annouced yesterday?! Another month, damn it!

We actually are thinking that Scarlet could turn into a 1080P camera... since the "other guys" are saying that 1080P is good enough.

Jim

If it's true that sounds great and reminds me on on of my earlier expectation.

It could be that Scarlet is going to beat a lot of other HD cine pro cameras in their Achille heel...

Guessed specs: S35mm frame sized imager, 1080P/2K R3D RAW, with HDRx 14 stops of DR guaranteed to get out of the box, up to 300 fps @ 1080p, 500fps @ 720p, PL, Canon, Leica-M, R, etc... mounts,

Also HD-SDI, HDMI and 1080p playback enabled from a day one, super lightweight, and pretty AFFORDABLE!!!

Phantom Flex, what's this?

Alexa, who's that?

Sony F3? Very bulky for a handheld use, has @ 60p only, also needs additional HD-SDI 4:4:4 to get a decent picture...

Sony F65? Send it to Epic X or M for 4K proof...

New Canon? Nice but slow because can do 60p only...

Scarlet was always a camera of filmmaker's or cinematographer's dream...

But again I could be here totally wrong....!!???

Just less than four weeks left...

This is ridiculously exciting.

It seems like a truly “heroic” RED product offering and set of announcements.

BTW is there a limit to the number of “Scarlet” like devices/systems and cameras that can be put on a single order? I am assuming that it’s not limited to one camera/order right?

Hatts off to RED TEAM, big respect...

Thanks in advance,

Eric

We make preparations come what may…so we can pull the "trigger" at a moment's notice...

I just have this bad feeling we will get area wide power faliure come the time, do you guys have an old fashioned telephone service to take orders come what may?

After just watching the disappointing "iPhone 4S" announcement, now I'm looking forward to Nov 3rd, where hopefully Red will have a much better showing!!

How was the iPhone 4S announcement disappointing? The only thing missing from the 4S that was supposed to be in the "iPhone 5" or even rumored/hoped to be in there, was the larger screen and tapered body design. Neither of which make sense. No one wants the phone to be bigger, seriously. And the tapered tear-drop shape isn't that hand-holdable, Apple already commented on that one a month or so back, but the rumor-mill seemed to ignore it. So-called iPhone 5 tapered case designs hitting the market are based on a stolen prototype (I suspect it may have even been planted to cause confusion).

Look on the bright side. It's got a 3K 8MP image sensor and records 1080p onboard. Alexa just got served. lol...

Seriously though, not to hijack this thread any further, but they just squeezed an iPad 2 with a newer, kick-ass camera down into an iPhone 4, improved cellular support and reception, unified CDMA+GSM architecture... What were you hoping for? Quad-core Xeon with built in laser projection and no-glasses 3D? Each one personally inspected and signed by Elvis? OK, a lot of people were hoping for LTE support, but there's too many politics at work there, not going to happen.

Interesting you should say it was disappointing. Is that an object lesson for REDusers as to Jim's warning about guessing too much? Seems like the disappointment may be based on a high level of expectations that were thrown around prior to the announcement? :nonod:

Haters gonna hate...

You'll see come november 3rd.

Can't please everyone, but I'm still anxious for my 3K 2/3" fixed-lens creamy goodness...

Based on that quote above, I think it likely that 2/3" fixed Scarlet may have even dropped to 2k.

Dropping all the way down to 1080p doesn't sound like Jim. Of course, is a new sensor design feasible at this stage?

If the specs are somewhere in the ballpark of what has been announced before (Even if its 2k/1080p) then the only thing that will Really matter is the price. How many can you afford? Medium to Big players are gonna want interchangeable anyway... small players may only get one or two of the Fixed.

2/3" isn't going to be 4k, IMO, so why 3k? If the 2 cinema standards are 2k and 4k, is upscaling from 3k really that much better than upscaling from 2k? And for broadcast/event work, real 1080p is the standard and will be for a while. 3k is the odd man out.
Point is, I'm not going to be editing 4k on my editing system anytime soon, especially since most features are still 2k.

As twisted as it sounds, I bet Scarlet fixed has gone down in some form of specs in order to accommodate a price.

Scarlet is the camera that Jim wants everyone to want. Yes he's talked about it being the industry B camera, but he's also made a point of emphasizing the production amount. They plan to sell a lot. They're wont be any firmware testing, beta bugs, etc. This means that Scarlet is more than just a B cam bought by the same players that buy Epic or R1. If you want it to be widespread, its gotta be affordable. Sure you can price it at $12k and you're competing with other 2/3" camcorders.... but not crazy popular ones.

If scarlet is to be sold to the biggest crowd of film enthusiasts, its gotta go to the low budget studios. My price guess is $7k down.

Low budget films (even with budgets of $500k) are still shot on 5D's or even HVX200's. And rented ones at that.

I guess I just don't get why some people Want to spend 15 grand so that they can get a camera thats still not as good as an R1, but well beyond whats needed for broadcast work....

You're either shooting 4k or you're shooting 1080p/2k.

I think Jim was joking.

I think Jim was joking.

I went back and looked, and realized that of course he was, but I'm still arguing that 2k is more probable than 4k...

I don't think that 1080P is "good enough", but its a current standard for broadcast (or 1080i)... and the jump from 1080p to 2k is not that huge. If Scarlet isn't going to be 4k, then why be 3k... who plans on post in 3k? If you use scarlet as a B cam, you hopefully won't have any slow, detailed shots... I don't think the difference between upscaled 2k and upscaled 3k is enough to be a selling point.

Now you're joking, right?

I seriously doubt Scarlet is 2K. Even 3K is hard for Red to explain, given their "4K is the future" and "Rendering obsolescence obsolete" mantras.

Not if my intended meaning is coming across clear.... :) I could have been less clear than I realized...

Well thats my point... if it isn't 4k, then it might as well be 2k.

If it's 4k... well... I don't see it as the mass produced ready-to-go camera that Jim has talked about... not unless he's selling it for $7k...

Personally, I really don't see anything wrong with 3k. It may be odd in that no one else is currently making a camera that's exactly 3k, but that doesn't mean it won't work in post. 3k would still be a huge step up from almost any camera except RED's other offerings. In my mind that still makes 3k quite a competitive leader.

One thing to keep in mind about the 3K spec that was being planned for Scarlet is that it is expected to resolve a very nice 2.4K. Since no CMOS sensor (to my knowledge) resolves 100% in debayer, the 3K does indeed have a significant advantage over shooting 2K/1080. Resolving at 2.4K even gives a little room for cropping or recomposing if you are finishing at 1080.

No, 3K is better than 2K for several reasons. And whether or not it's 4K, Scarlet's kit configuration will not be ready to shoot out of the box because by all estimates it will lack storage. From an indie-affordable perspective, maybe the worst thing that could happen would be Scarlet fixed's being dropped and the Cinema's sensor's being bumped up to S16 size. Good S16 zooms are very expensive and apparently getting even more so.
