  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 8x internal 120FPS test

Nice! Soooo...release window? I think I saw a September estimate for production starting?

I'm one of those lucky soles that can afford the EPIC's and have ordered 4 of them, BUT!!!!!! 120fps in RAW..... Seriously.
Unless I'm doing a 4k finish for a film... then do i Really need a big epic when a small one will suffice.

If the little scarlet only shot 60fps... then I really wouldn't care to much for it. But it's going to be more a useable camera than we all might think.
Every TV show out there only deliveres in HD, most movies are still 2k... After all my EPIC M testing HDRX is like useful, but I doubt Ill use much because the base sensitivity of the EPIC (and soon to be Scarlet) is more than enough.
The Scarlet only cost 5,000-10,000 compared to a 58k Epic M... or a Production EPIC of 30-35K...

What I'm saying is the Scarlet weighs up to be a bigger bang for buck hitter than the EPIC in my eyes (now that I have seen this test) . and I bet the EPIC S will be pumping out 120Fps at 5k before you know as well, for $13,000. (because Jim loves to keep upping the specs)

So EPIC M & X killer.. I think so.

This Scarlet test really opened my eyes. I'm super impressed!
The EPIC - S is more than enought to shoot a feature film in 5k for $13,000. that one is also catching my attention.
As a bang it up camera, B camera, stunt camera... man! get 3 of them!

I think to save EPIC M,X and production EPIC sales, Either specs have to come down on the Scarlets and EPIC S or the EPIC M&X has to start growing bigger balls before they come out.

Irrespective of this... WOW!!!!!! what a choice!!!!!.. I'm completely re-evaluating my purchase ideas now.

Bloody exciting stuff. GO RED! GO!

By my calculations a 2 camera package of the fixed + interchangeable + miniprimes will approximate an epic for just about everything but resolution. (fixed for zoom, mini-primes for shallow dof)
With a Sound Devices PIX240 you've got TV and fast turnaround covered leaving Epic for the realm of projection and future proofing.
My humble opinion.

it was 720 but i did a crop on export top and bottom instead of leaving the bars.

Does this mean that the Scarlet fixed would only be able to shoot 120 fps in 2:40:1 (or 2:35:1)? When trying the Epic it could only do that for now, but will it be enabled in an update to shoot 120 fps full frame on the Epic? Same for Scarlet fixed to shoot 3K FF at 120 fps? (if you cropped the image I recon that it was a 2:40:1 image before?

Good question, I think I would just like to see the spec page for the scarlet kinda like this one for the epic

Soon? :D :D :D

EPIC shoots 96fps 5K full frame and 120fps 2.40:1.

Scarlet shoots full frame 3K at 120fps with a burst mode to 160-ish.

Ola, 160fps in burst mode.
How many seconds can it shoot in burst mode ?

Hi Jim. IMO this statement really strikes me as key not to just acquisition but viewer habits. People want to watch stuff in the theater (epic). People want to watch stuff on handheld devices, internet and tv (scarlet). Its a good business strategy.

Where scarlets unseen benefit lies is that its price point will help propagate red and raw workflow and hopefully increase market penetration for red products.

I think we'll definitely pick up a Scarlet to vastly upgrade our EX1/Nano combo which we still sometimes use for light run-and-gun when crew/budget/time are minimal and we need a motorized zoom. 2/3rds still has many, many optimal uses, and this appears to be a 2/3rds wet dream.

Scarlet just rocks! So great. Gotta save so more money :)

Must be nice having your own studio to play in! One time I'd like to see you guys pay homage to all those that came before RED in that studio. Lot of history there.

Really fun to see this progress along. You've got a fun job, Jarred.

Andre... you must be new. :-) Welcome to the party here at reduser.

Dumbing down specs is kind of the anti-philosophy at RED.

Jim

Like Adam has said-Please don't dumb down any of the specs!

but I bet I'm the only one here that ever owned the original - Scout 80. Or helped give the birth to the skateboard in the 60's - when we took roller skate wheels and screwed them on the bottom of wood scraps.
.

Steve you're not the only one here...

Jarred, that set design was a wicked combination. I love that you left (or placed even) a pile of black stingers in the foreground plane to fill in an empty spot in the unfolding tableau. Crazy cool, and a brilliant way to remind that deeper focus can be goodness.l

Ola, 160fps in burst mode.

We are still testing.. we don't know the answer to that yet.

And for what it's worth.. the reason I chose 120 was not because it was the limit on the day.. it was because practically i needed to think about how much light i could afford to use using a narrow shutter enough shutter not to create complete motion blur at 120fps etc.
