  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 8x internal 120FPS test

As a skater myself I was impressed with the one take and of course the smoothness of the shot.
Someone said "holy sh*t!!" earlier. Being Canadian Im accustomed to "holy crap!!"

Is there production notes anywhere on this shoot?
Dying to know the lighting in this one:)

jarred kindly commented on this.

Yup.. heh heh that poor truck just keeps taking a beating and keeps on ticking..

Anyways as for lighting... It was much more complicated than i originally planned... seems to always happen to me for some reason. I started with space lights scattered along at about 15 foot intervals directly above the runway.. you can see one of them in the shot and the others not visible are just off of top of camera.

i ended up putting one 5k on far left and one 5k on the far right.. both of them very close to being inline of Matt but pushed a little further away from camera oas not to ever reveal him completely unless he was under one of the space lights.. Put a half scrim on the left side where the whole thing begins as to cut down the amount of light since he was so close to it at the start..

Had a row of zip lights to light the foreground as needed... i actually ended up running them almost the entire length of track as I like what they did with the heavy smoke.

other than that.. just a few random par cans or 1k fresnels to light up various bits.

The lens is not full wide here.. I still had some room. Shot at 1/250th of a shutter, 120fps. I intended on 3 planes of focus.. foreground, skater runway then background ( cop car ) Nate had the Preston and would rack along my ride to make sure 2 of the 3 where in focus at all times at the right time.

Movietech Arco dolly with a Oconnor head... nothing else other than the preston hooked up to the camera, no monitors etc. Would do a take, grab the card and run over to Dan sitting in front of his mac in a corner of the stage to watch playback. Pretty easy stuff :)

Blows my mind!!

Blows my mind!!

Somewhat unusually, my dogs woke me up at 4:30 AM wanting to be let out. They must have sensed something. I checked REDUser, saw Jarred's "test," and wasn't able to go back to sleep. What a way to begin the week!!! :emote_happyhappy:

Please don't dumb down any of the specs! - I feel that the Epic's will be safe with their 'VistaVision' quality. The competition, not so sure.. - I'm amazed. This will help every indie to raise his/her game. Those with talent but without unlimited budgets will go forth and do great things :D Thank you for all your hard work guys. It's much appreciated.

quick little test huh Jarred? heh heh heh

well played Scarlet Fixed, well played, but Im more impressed with your STAGING... really, really really well done!

What kind of smokers are you using for the atmosphere?

I don't want my EPIC-M no more, I'll get 16 Scarlet fixed instead... after waiting forever for my EPIC-M to arrive, I may as well wait a little longer right? :)

Awesome job on shooting this Jarred. Really.

What I also love about scarlet is that it's almost the same as epic, in terms of handling. So it's a perfect learners camera for people who might want to rent epic for bigger shots. Perfect student cam :)

(start the addiction early, I say ! Hehe)

Awesome Jarred!

Got 120fps working in the Scarlet 8x prototypes this week.. did a quick little test on Stage 6 at the studio for fun.

720p ProRes LT

Just great. That's what we all have been waiting for. Dark is dark. Many details...
But is the file 720p, because I see only 1024x510 ? Or was it edited in 720p ?

it was 720 but i did a crop on export top and bottom instead of leaving the bars.

What kind of smokers are you using for the atmosphere?

el cheapo Chauvet lighting via Amazon.. I think it was $199 for the main on that filled the stage... took about 4 minutes to fill that 12,000 square foot space... and also a little $19 one i put in that smoke stack at the beginning.

I found that all you really need for a big fogger is something around 1500 watts, that should be enough to be always push smoke without waiting for it to warm up again.

This is super funny, i'm friends with one of the skaters shooting at the cop car, pretty funny stuff. I had to hold my tongue on this one haha. Looks awesome Jarred! Good job! Oh yeah he also told me that they got to watch some stuff on the 45' screen over there and he was amazed. I think thats really amazing if people who aren't even into film can notice the difference in quality. Very excellent.
