  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 8x internal 120FPS test

Wow.

Thanks.

*LUST*

You see skater punks & hoes (and I'll bet at least one of them had tats *ducks* - incoming! )

I see slow-mo lava fountains... explosions... flying rocks

Could the Scarlet kill the EPIC sales... I think so :))))

I think I've just converted. Why do you need the EPIC. This thing rocks and its 1/4 the price.

Were do I sign!

It almost converted me! I originally planned to buy just a Scarlet, when I started researching this last year.

But, having shot with an EPIC and played with the footage, I can really appreciate the stills possibilities of the bigger sensor. I can justify the outlay. What I'd like is for RED to blast through Stages 2 & 3 as soon as possible, which will get me my EPIC, give me time to rebuild my bank balance - then buy a Scarlet as soon as they hit the market, as a B camera, or as an ultra-light camera for situations where I can't justify, or risk, or carry the weight of, a full EPIC rig.

I will list 3 good reasons, I agree with you for me in my situation because im just starting out, perfect starter cam.

1) 5k compared to 3k. Not important to small guys like me, cause most likely be doing only 1080 for clients anyway. BUT! I think 4k standards are not far away, so in thoughts of being prepared.

2) 300fps at 2k, or 200fps at 3k for the epic. That...is sweet...

3) fixed lens :/ or crop factor...(scarlet 2/3 interchangable) the scarlets crop factor, i have not read up on, but I did hear it is going to be smaller, so your PL mount glass is going to be significantly..."zoomed" in comparison to the epic sensor, going to be hard to get wide shots.

Honestly, people that cant afford epic, will POUNCE on scarlet, but I dont think companies that can afford epic...will get it..I mean come on...for a cinema camera...you cant beat the price/performance...But I do think those companies will also buy scarlet as b-roll cameras or for smaller paying gigs.

So I dont think Epic sales will hurt too bad, might just up sales of both! But then again...I am not one of the big guys, I cant know for sure. You could be right for sure Mark :)

Either way...these cameras are unreal! :cheers2:

heh heh thats what was so funny... I was literally in the middle of shooting this right when Rob Ruffo posted his other thread :

Yeah, but where the m-f-in tattoos at? [laughs, loudly launches tobacco cud toward corner, guzzles can of curs in one gulp]

dollar dollar bills.... she finally had enough.

Closet libber - but sensitivity is a good trick to snag ......

The Scout is cool, but I bet I'm the only one here that ever owned the original - Scout 80. Or helped give the birth to the skateboard in the 60's - when we took roller skate wheels and screwed them on the bottom of wood scraps.

Sorry, but that clip was so much fun I temporarily devolved.

Yeah that sounds about right :)

I'm one of those lucky soles that can afford the EPIC's and have ordered 4 of them, BUT!!!!!! 120fps in RAW..... Seriously.
Unless I'm doing a 4k finish for a film... then do i Really need a big epic when a small one will suffice.

If the little scarlet only shot 60fps... then I really wouldn't care to much for it. But it's going to be more a useable camera than we all might think.
Every TV show out there only deliveres in HD, most movies are still 2k... After all my EPIC M testing HDRX is like useful, but I doubt Ill use much because the base sensitivity of the EPIC (and soon to be Scarlet) is more than enough.
The Scarlet only cost 5,000-10,000 compared to a 58k Epic M... or a Production EPIC of 30-35K...

What I'm saying is the Scarlet weighs up to be a bigger bang for buck hitter than the EPIC in my eyes (now that I have seen this test) . and I bet the EPIC S will be pumping out 120Fps at 5k before you know as well, for $13,000. (because Jim loves to keep upping the specs)

So EPIC M & X killer.. I think so.

This Scarlet test really opened my eyes. I'm super impressed!
The EPIC - S is more than enought to shoot a feature film in 5k for $13,000. that one is also catching my attention.
As a bang it up camera, B camera, stunt camera... man! get 3 of them!

I think to save EPIC M,X and production EPIC sales, Either specs have to come down on the Scarlets and EPIC S or the EPIC M&X has to start growing bigger balls before they come out.

Irrespective of this... WOW!!!!!! what a choice!!!!!.. I'm completely re-evaluating my purchase ideas now.

Bloody exciting stuff. GO RED! GO!

Not only that..but basically with the Scarlet fixed it's almost throwing in a lens for free with the camera.

In any field you always pay the most for the last percentages of performance. People will have to decide how
much resolution they need. Watch clips of old VistaVision movies on youtube and you'll see that
you never really throw the higher resolution out...it still differentiates itself even on youtube no matter how much
it's been optically reduced from it's original format.

So sick.

Can't wait for these puppies to start shipping?

They way Jim has described it, they are throwing a camere in for free with a lens. :)

I see your point, but epic-S should be 60fps at 5k(guess), I don't think Jim will be pushing higher for that, because the whole point of the epic-s is to reduce the speed half the epic-x's throughput. And here is the other thing...The specs of the scarlet are not final...what is its native dynamic range? If it is the same as epic...then awesome I can see you buying a scarlet instead of an epic. But if it is not, I find dynamic range extremely important, and HDR-x is not suitable for every shot to match that DR. The scarlet is good for sure...I wont disagree. but me, I will probably buy my scarlet and dream of an epic :)

Dont get me wrong though Mark, I see your point, and its a good one! I am excited as well regardless! :D

I was expecting to see Matt Bennett do a Bennett grind ;)

Can't wait to film some skateboarding at 360fps. Not to mention the remaps!

3K 2:1, Redcode 8:1, ISO 1000, T2.4, 1/250 shutter, 120fps.

Hey, wait a minute... T2.4 now? Is it for realz, or is that a typo? Thought the lens was supposed to be F2.4 / T2.6... :)

Typo sorry F2.4. fixed.

Nice one Jarred. I like! I was pleasantly surprised to see your subject matter to say the least. Roots man roots.
Your dolly grip is a hero for sure.

Totally stunned. That is one hell of a "quick test"
