  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 8x Fixed Lens Photo

Looks good. I don't see a focus ring on the lens though, and I would need manual focus if I got a Scarlet...

The most logical one for me would be the zoom ring...

nice to see progress!!!

I would think that is a focus ring and that zoom is possibly electronically controlled with buttons?

Methinks you can map the ring to any function you want.

Zoom control from the rocker switch on the Side Grip or REDmote for example?

So besides those buttons being there for the 8x fixed scarlet why are they there, because of the gunner possibly? Sorry if this has been answered but I was a little unclear about the gunner since it seems to be a bunch of different accessories in one.

Maybe there's something else special about RED's new electronic lenses...

Let me dream of a zoom controlled by a bezier curve (y axis focal length, x axis time) with a programmable delay start and reverse loop option. Wishful I know.
most logical way to control a programmable zoom

I hope its not like the fly-by-focus on the Exilim EX-F1 as the programmable C-ring is worthless as the image takes seconds to focus once you've turned it...

I have trouble believing RED would settle for this...

Yeah, me, too, just never had good experience with fly-by-wire. For me its manual all the way... but if Red figured it out, man that would be convenient. I would have to imagine they did with their new eletronic lenses and touch screen focusing... But we'll just see...

Why is the fixed lens fixed and not just bundled with a 2/3" brain?

It's pretty obvious isn't it? The 2/3 Fixed has a deeper body to accommodate the necessary components for the lens. Don't forget this is not just a lens, it has an intricate system on it to make it versatile and better than any other in the market. I don't think they can just house the fly-by-wire components in a conventional lens housing that easily (not yet at least :smile5:)

The question is what would it take to make the lens fully manual like the other RPPs and just house it like any other lens and sell it individually. I doubt that will happen but would you really want that? Something tells me that the fly-by-wire system will remove all preconceived notions about fixed lens systems and make you think twice about everyone's bias towards primes.
