  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

Advantage?

With the Fixed Scarlet, it includes a lens with an FF35 Equivalent of 28mm-224mm...

On the flip side, if you would rather faster glass than the f2.4 / T2.6 found in the FIXED model, RED will be manufacturing "Mini-RED PRIMES" (2/3" Format) to go along with the CINEMA model...

6.5mm T1.9
8mm T1.5
16mm T1.5
25mm T1.8
50mm T2.9
75mm T4

Last projected price point was about $900/each...

Has not been finalized.

I think RED wants to sell the 8x Fixed just like it shows up right now:

Body with CF module, 5" LCD, Hand grip and Redmote.

That would be a really attractive package. Plus, it would be true to the idea that you are fully functional out of the box. By "fully functional" I mean you get what most people are realistically going to need.

I think RED's problem is price. We all know it has been hiked already—for good reason—but still. I am pretty sure RED is reluctant to make it any more expensive. I think the dream target for RED is now $5995, but I'm not sure they can cram the Redmote in there.

If they can sell the CES-version at sub 6000, I think most people would consider that a killer deal. Most likely I see them removing the Redmote, leaving the LCD and selling it for $5995, or as cheap as they can.

Another problem is that if they DO keep the Redmote and keep the price $6000 it would make their other rigs almost seem expensive (strictly comparing RED products ofcourse).

The CES-version of 8x Fixed Scarlet is a very, very, very… hmm, it is a crazy offer in every meaning of the word.

But then again, Jim probably suffers from "insanity light" :smile5:

Well, here's my wish list...

  • Scarlet 2/3" Body
  • Quality Zoom Lens
  • Hand grip
  • 5" LCD
  • CF Module
  • 2 RED Bricks and charger
  • At least 2x 32GB (preferably 64GB) CF cards
  • Half decent on-camera microphone.

Of those thing I listed, I would be absolutely laughing if I could get the first 5 items listed for between $6k and $7k. I would personally however like to see RED bundle in a little microphone. I mean, what's a video camera without a micrphone? It doesn't have to be anything special. I'd trust RED to source the best microphone bang-for-buck wise for around the $100 mark.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to get everything on that list for sub $10k.

The Redmote doesn't seem like something a lot of Scarlet 8x users will take advantage of, and thus I would myself like to see that kept as an optional accessory (one that's well priced though of course).

As a final thought, imagine how awesome it would be if the Scarlet 8x actually had a detachable lens

Really?

I can see the majority of buyers using Scarlet as a stunt cam, up on a jib, sticking it in helicopter etc. etc.

I think the REDmote would be a rather essential accessory in the kit...

Although, on a personal level, I don't really need one, but I think the majority of buyers would like to see it included in the package.

I guess I've always seen the majority of potential Fixed Scarlet customers to be hobbyist or indie film makers. I'd imagine anyone that has the budget to utilise equipment that would benefit from a Redmote (e.g. cranes, multi-camera setups), would opt for the Scarlet Cinema (non-fixed lens); they'd probably have other specific requirements (e.g. EVF instead of LCD display) and wouldn't want to spend the extra on bundled accessories they don't need, rather using the money to purchase the accessories they DO need. That's how I see it anyway, I wonder what RED's target audience is for the Scarlet Fixed.

Hmmm... I think the REDMOTE is possibly one of the DSMC system's coolest features - I'd hate to see it removed from the kit package...

One thing I will probably be doing with it is using it to control two 2/3" Scarlets in a stereo setup (I'll be borrowing the other camera from my brother). Running on a crane is another big one (little jibs are pretty cheap).

I also think the Redmote is very cool for what it does. I really want one.

But I think it's not realistic to hope for one in the package. Reasons being:

  • 8x will be a cheap as possible
  • Redmote is not needed to drive the camera
  • A Redmote can control more than one Scarlet, which means that if you buy 2 or more Scarlet Fixed, you don't necessarily need more than one Redmote
  • I don't know what the Redmote costs, but I think RED will want to be able to cut as many hundred dollars off the price as possible. Or the other way: they don't want to inflate the price more than necessary

To me, the body+CF+LCD+grip (of course charger and battery) is essential. I also need audio and would appreciate an affordable RED solution, but my fear is that it would add too much to the price.

$6000 WITH Redmote is the dream, but it makes more sense then to sell Scarlet without for $5500 and then perhaps $500-700 for the Redmote.

You might want to revise your idea of a good microphone for this kind of "video camera".

Most standard mics like Rode Shotguns start at around $250. Anything worth its salt in a bodypack wireless reciever/transmitter starts at about $700. Look around for Seinheisser, RODE, Audio Technica etc. I know that a PRO would look even higher!

In the few years I have been making even the lowest budget of films, one thing I hate most is when I stuff up my audio.

I would think that if you were going to spend $10-$12k on a camera, you would probably be able to spend an extra $1k on an audio system.

I guess you have to ask, what percentage of the Redmote's cost is already in the camera? I'm referring to the wireless transmitter and receiver. If a significant portion of the cost is already in the camera to enable the Redmote accessory, then it would make sense not to put that extra cost to waste, and be sure to bundle the Scarlet Fixed with a redmote. I don't imagine the in-camera cost would be substantial however.

Once again, it depends on the camera's application for a particular user. Some people may not need great audio. Though I'm sure everyone, no matter what the camera's intended application, would gain something out of having a $100 mic come with the Scarlet (at least at some point over the lifetime of the camera). An extra audio channel never goes to waste.

Point taken. Were you thinking something embeded into the camera, much like a handycam, as opposed to an external fitting? I have heard something along the lines of the camera having a cooling fan.

Would his pose an issue in regards to the mic picking up this audio as well as the intended audio? Anyone care to comment?

OTE=Lee Saxon;706261]Juicedlink already does.[/QUOTE]

We have already discussed this. The adapters for unbalanced stereo input jacks on consumer cameras will not work with Scarlet and are not needed.
Juiced Links will not work.

I'm sure alot of us want the redmote pro... so if it is bundled, hopefully an upgrade path?

I was thinking along the same lines. If recent clarifications (from forum members - not from RED) are correct, only the Redmote Pro can adjust focus remotely. That's huge for me, and probably for a lot of others. I'd rather foregoe the regular redmote on purchase, and buy the Redmote pro later. Later, both to allow my wallet to recover a bit, and because I think it will be released later than Scarlet Fixed.

Exactly. I shoot mostly music videos and usually with no audio at all.

As Ted said in the Guardian interview, Scarlet is by no means a video camera. It's a low-end (by RED standards) digital motion picture camera. Since they're pricing to kill with this thing, I don't see a mic being included; it would be wasted on the target market.

A reply I had made it clear the basic Redmote *can* adjust focus, and all other camera parameters remotely. What you get with the Pro version is a full-blown electronic *follow-focus* system; you can't do follow-focus on the basic version.

Thanks, Mike. That's kind of what I remembered, though the response I think you are referring to was not from Red. I also wonder how well that thumbwheel will work for something as fine as focussing as opposed to iris or ISO. I also noticed Ted didn't mention focus as a Redmote function in one of the CES interviews - though that was rushed and the omission could have been an oversight.

In any case, here's another reason why a lot of users might not want a redmote. In a thread requesting an online redmote simulator, Jarred answered:

dont worry guys.. working on it. and it wont be just a simulator.. it will be an actual app.

I also don't see a mic included, but I don't see the need to "box in" a target market.

I think the Scarlet will be many things to many people.

What ever the target market for Scarlet is, there is definitely A market for a run-n-gun Scarlet with a mic.

The Fixed Scarlet seems to be set to become the lowest priced proper motion picture camera (I include video cameras in this category).

I am a hobbyist looking to become commercial for small jobs such as events and weddings. I have no plans doing "productions" with lots of gear involving many people. It will be me and an assistant or two.

I want:

  • a Scarlet sized camera (to be able to move freely among normal people, not scaring them off)
  • shooting RAW, artifact free video/film
  • good, possibly excellent low light performance
  • manual exposure
  • auto focus with electronic manual lock toggle. Touch to focus-and-lock would be nice.
  • Possibility to isolate subjects with shallow enough DOF from around 85mm (35mm equiv.)
  • LCD large and hires enough (5" looks good) to determine critical focus—even in daylight
  • dynamic range of 11+ stops
  • on board audio with pro electronics with XLR options for going pro.
  • battery that lasts for at least 2 hours- 4 would be good.
  • recording to cheap media
  • Firmware upgradable with a company that supports it—or more importantly—me and my needs. EVEN if I'll never produce "Conan 5"…
  • Not much more than $6000

To my group I think $6000 comes close to the breaking point. If I can get what I want for $6500, of course I'm going to stretch it. Point is: it needs to be a usable package there. Not $6000 as a starting point were I will need a rig, a mic, a battery pack for $500 etc...

If you're already a commercial studio price shouldn't be a problem. But I think there are many like me who are looking to get Scarlet to start everything off, but where there isn't any business at the time of purchace.

I realize I'm not the supporting pillar of RED, but I feel I represent a valid group of customers with high hopes for Scarlet.

There was a time that "button" microphones were mentioned to fit easily in the TRS ports on the front and provide an easy way to capture a scratch track.

There are optional RED button mics that can plug into the front of the camera brain.

Or you can use external microphones; whatever works best for you.

Kudos to Joseph, but shot with my camera

Anyone from RED know if this idea is still on the table and/or if we'll see it around Scarlet launch?
