  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

but then you see the shot of the LCD menu right after where it clearly says 2.5, so not sure what all the ruckus was about on the forum... anyway hopefully that was some press good coverage on the Scarlet for you guys - it was fun running around with it, showing it off.

+ Ted

HeHe! It came across that you were trying to remember whether it was f2.4 or f2.5 - I got that and I'm just a girl and not mean to understand these things :)

Thanks for the coverage Ted I really appreciate it. Plus I like hearing you talk about the Scarlet. It must be fun to plug kit that you can truthfully say this thing is amazing - not just because I'm part of RED. It genuinely does kick ass.

Thanks for the post. Good to see the hardware alive and walking about...

Mike

Thank you, David, but I'm afraid I still don't understand the suggestion. So does the Scarlet have a built-in XLR adapter, in place of the Beachtek? - I'm trying to get around having to purchase the pro audio module. XLR adapters have served me well. When you get a chance, can you clarify for this newbie? :-)

1/8" TRS plug to XLR female adapter cable wired as follows:

Tip to XLR pin 2, hot +
Ring to XLR pin 3, cold -
Shield to XLR pin 1, ground

Scarlet has two 1/8" TRS input jacks wired like this for two channel recording directly from any balanced low impedance dynamic or phantom powered condenser microphone just like an XLR equipped camera. No external preamps or adapters needed other than the cable.

Ash.. I can give you a bunch of reasons not to buy a Scarlet.. too tired to list them for you. Suggest you just move on and buy another camera from another company.. there are lots to choose from.

Sound advice thanks. I'll take this to mean you are a while away from release so we should go with something else. Appreciate the heads up.

Thanks, David. Brave of you to post that, since folks may follow the directions and ... well, s--- happens. Though the info could also just be used to check existing cable adapters. In case any DIYers want a premium right-angle 1/8 plug, Neutrik makes one (all-metal, gold plated) NTP3RC-B

But as long as (some of us) are on the topic of sound and the Fixed is getting close to release, and since many of us will often rely on sound recorded to the camera, I'm getting more curious about features I've always assumed Scarlet would have, but have yet to see. Such as: level meters and controls. Would love to see these in operation, and various control options via Redmote or on camera.

A quick question for anyone there who might know.

After watching the interview I was wondering:
When the camera is on a jib or a steadicam rig s it possible to use the touch-screen remotely, to take advantage of features like the "Touch-To-Focus"?

I'm asking since the Redmote is a controller only (no video feed).

Thanks, David. So I basically need a 1/8" TRS to XLR converter, plug this converter into one of the two Scarlet 1/8" input jacks, then connect the male XLR mic cable connection into the converter. Do I have this correct? Sorry for the questions.

Based on information available thus far, there has been no mention of a wireless version of the Red Pro touchscreen lcd. Perhaps a long lcd cable may be a solution.

From what I've seen the Redmote already has an LCD, and two-way data comms with the camera. Would it be totally outrageous to suggest it might be possible to get the Redmote LCD to display at least a static image of what the camera sees? Enough to check composition and critical focus? Or does it already have this capability? (sorry, new here!)

Mike

I think it's more about the amount of data required to send a video feed wirelessly.

I could be wrong, though...

RED has rebuffed any suggestion that camera images per se will be viewable on the Redmote or Redmote Pro, although parameters (focus, aperture, shutter speed, color balance, etc.) will be viewable and controllable.

The rotary dial on the Redmote Pro will enable wireless follow-focus with electronic lenses mounted to the camera but reference to images will be made on a Red LCD, EVF or third-party LCD, except that only the Red LCD will enable touch-screen focus.

Not so much the amount of data as the available wireless data rates, and the relatively low level of reliability of a wireless connection. A film set is likely to be a pretty noisy environment, too, with all the radios and such used to communicate with film crew.

It would be great to have the option, but I wouldn't expect it to work all that well - and I don't think RED would want a reputation for flakiness.

That interviewer Devin was pretty juiced up... was hard to even answer one question before he was onto the next one...
+ Ted

yeah, I felt for you. I was really looking forward to hearing some more on the early history of RED and was bummed to see the guy change the subject as you started talking about the cool 3D glasses.

At the same time, I'd be super nervous if I was interviewing you with a working Scarlet right in front of me. I remember what it was like when I did the interview for the EPIC last NAB. :)
