  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

I'd like to think I should be getting used to this sort of thing by now, but I swear it gets worse every year, with every new Macworld, CES, NAB and Siggraph... Or maybe I just care more now than I used to. I don't know.

I think it's getting worse. My biggest gripe with Googling these days is getting the same content listed on a thousand different sites, making it harder to find stuff that wasn't in that one press release everyone is paraphrasing.

Also, what is that round circular thing in front of the zoom rocker?

Ajit - Any chance you can post an image with a circle or arrow designating what you are talking about?

I started a thread in another forum, but maybe I should have asked here. I'm going to buy a Scarlet as soon as they're available... as a trainer camera (to get used to RED workflow etc.) for what I really want and need: the Scarlet FF35 - the FX sensor camera.

But I have to ask, can someone (preferably from RED!) give it to me straight: is there a roadmap for that camera? A tentative schedule? Is it even still in development? I've been told it's gone very quiet and although it's still listed in the FAQ it's not been officially mentioned in over a year :-(

The button is to the right of the red record button and below the zoom rocker.

That button is whatever you want it to be... They're programmable. The rocker doesn't have to be zoom, either...

I know (1) I'm not from RED and (2) in spite of me searching google and here directly on the forums, I couldn't find the post from Jannard from about a month ago. But if you trust me, in essence he said:

I have seen the early results from the Monstro sensor and am quite impressed. It is still in the early stages of development and is still going according as planned.

Now that I have said that, I personally expect the FF35 cameras from RED to have a different name than EPIC or Scarlet. With the Scarlet being assigned to the 2/3" sensor and the EPIC being designated to distinguish the S35 Sensor, it only seems logical.

I'm wondering if the Scarlet 2/3" Fixed will ever get the Monstro sensor. You can't exactly swap the brain on that model.

Thanks for that Joseph... so it seems not any time soon, but it IS still on the way. Or... I thought 'Monstro' was the designation applied to the medium format - 645 and larger - sensors that were in the pipeline? And I'm pretty sure I read there were to be both 'EPIC' and 'Scarlet' versions of the FF35 camera, presumably with different prices and capabilities?

Is it just me who finds RED model nomenclature, and the changes it undergoes, confusing?! :-)

Pointless without footage, real footage.
It's like buying a car without driving it.
Makes me think it's a long way off and there are problems with its recording ability.
Someone give me a reason otherwise.
It's a camera right? What's the most important thing?

Well Jarred says he'll share a Scarlet .R3D file with us shortly. Save your reservations until after it's posted.

It's because we sometimes want to change the names for RED...and RED listens. :)

The example would be when Jim originally said "The S35 Scarlet is now EPIC-L for Light." Many said "Ugh. Who likes 'Light anything." Thus a couple of days later we heard from RED: "Okay. You asked for it...you got it. The S35 Scarlet is now EPIC-S for the base "standard" EPIC or for what used to be a Scarlet but is now joining the caliber of an EPIC."

In terms of actually discerning the objective and empirical capabilities of these cameras - I agree.

In terms of providing footage from the camera showing it can produce something appealing and entertaining - then I disagree.

Alright. But when do car dealerships let us drive unfinished cars?

Makes me think it's a long way off and there are problems with its recording ability.

Well, when was the last time any camera company showed "real footage" from an unfinished camera? I've recently seen Panasonic, Canon, and Sony be rather tight lipped about it all.

Someone give me a reason otherwise.
Well, I suppose it's their camera. And they can sell it however they want.

Whenever they release "real" footage, it will undoubtedly be picked apart and compared to everything from 65mm film to HDSLRs to the latest crop of cameras from Arri, Panavision, Panasonic, Sony, etc.

Naturally, they would probably want to wait until the camera is suitably finished - which would be whatever they consider to be suitably finished - before they subject themselves to such scrutiny.

It's a camera right? What's the most important thing?

Depends on who you ask!

And for what it's worth, I imagine that once these cameras are finished and the first groups of people get their hands on them, we'll see all sorts of footage and all sorts of tests - skin tests, resolution tests, sharpness tests, color tests, skew tests, REDCODE tests, etc. All in good time.

Don't forget we've seen footage form the Scarlet already -
a short clip a while back that showed the speed of the Epic's programable focus feature.
It was a VERY short clip, but a clip nonetheless.
So, no reason to assume there are any problems with it's recording ability.

Unless you just felt spreading some FUD, that is.

Not to mention http://redgrabs.com/izzy/

They've been at it for awile now.

are you talking about the shiny black circle? thats a X-Sync port for flashes.

Ash.. I can give you a bunch of reasons not to buy a Scarlet.. too tired to list them for you. Suggest you just move on and buy another camera from another company.. there are lots to choose from.

Depressing reading the comments on Engadget et al - although I did add a few replies on Engadget in particular....

More I read this stuff, more I'm glad Scarlet costs more, and is more pro orientated. Playing prosumer would be a massive mistake for a company like RED.
