  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

Ted also said the lens was f/4, which, from every indication everywhere else, is just a mistake. (It's more like f/2.4). I am sure he is not trying to suggest any changes from what has been put out there. I am not saying there COULDN'T be any, but I don't think we should hang on what Ted said as an indicator of such.

And, remember, Ted has been flying all over the globe talking mostly about Epic for the last few months. I think he is entitled to be a little unclear on some of the yet-to-be-determined Scarlet details.

The interviewer asks Ted about the price to which Ted replies "we're still talking, target, ideas floating around the $6000 price range for this kind of stuff (waving his hand around the Scarlet Config he's holding)"

So it's NOT $6000 for the body only.

Last time Ted was talking about the price (before HDR) he said the Scarlet Kit would be "around $4000". It was then priced at $4750, so I'd SPECULATE that this kit, now with the added HDRx™, 5" Monitor etc will be Just under $7000.

PURE SPECULATION.

Has anyone else been checking this thread all day? Didn't Jarred say something about posting some scarlet r3d's or something?

It'd be reading pretty tight between the lines to expect .r3d files due to this comment...

Bones are good. Check back on Friday, and Ill show you someone else that really likes bones.

Heh heh heh....

If you're looking for someone who likes dog bones, here's an image shot on the Scarlet...

Huh. Look at the fan inlets at the bottom, below the lens. How long has that design been around?

Thanks Joseph. I must have overlooked it without the RED iconography there to grab the eye. And I agree - preferable in an aesthetic and what I believe to be a functional (i.e., airflow) understanding. I look forward to having one to use.

So RED is aiming for 6 thousand dollars, sounds good to me. (Lets be honest what RED lacks in making in deadlines they make up for in their insanely low price prediction which they mostly meet). On the down side it sounds like it’s a few more months behind epic than I had hoped (was hopping for a 2-3 month delay.) a pity but this is the most important camera RED will make and I know they’ll do it right.

(Reasons it’s the most important, one it’s the one I can afford, two this is the one that film schools can afford, and once you learnt scarlet you know epic. As Max Planck said “A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.”)

I DON’T WORK FOR RED THIS IS SPECULATION ONLY
Thanks

Last word on the DSMC's delivery schedule (other than the EPIC-S being moved to May 2011)...

Depending on EPIC orders...

Feb. to begin EPIC-X production and April to begin EPIC-S production. Scarlet right in there somewhere.

That could change depending on a lot of things.

Jim

Along with the following quote, I would expect that the production of the Scarlet will not be dependent on the EPIC's production/delivery. I think now, it's a matter of finalizing the Scarlet's shipping firmware and such...

...6. EPIC-S will use the same production line as its big brothers (which we are setting up now in California) so there will be no additional delays to produce this model. However, the EPIC-M and EPIC-X models will be released 1st as has previously been noted.

7. EPIC-Ms are currently being produced in low quantities and will step up just a bit this month (January). Production EPIC-X is scheduled to begin small production end of February with a fairly significant ramp up in March. Major volume begins in April. Many of you will have your EPIC-X by NAB. EPIC-S should begin production in May... depending on EPIC-X orders.

yeah thats what i wan't but "right in there" is ambiguas and on red time tabels i keep being optimistic and keep being wrong. but thanks for finding the oficial word (i had forgot)

More reasons: as we kill paper based media and move to the web, think about how many pixels it takes to make a beautiful image on the kinds of computer screens the masses worldwide use and are likely to use for at least the next few years if not the next decade. Even though final specs haven't been announced, Scarlet has the flexibility of RAW, and I think it's safe to assume Scarlet will have enough DR and low ISO performance to rival the best dslrs available today - at least at a level where the difference will be insignificant on the kinds of computer screens or even TV screens MOST people will have for years.

So unless you are shooting an epic story that is expected to be shown to hundreds of millions in theaters and last for generations, Scarlet is enough camera for that 90+% of work that needs to look beautiful today, and next year, to those 90+% of people whose access to resolution, or whose expectations, are not cutting edge.

At $6-7,000 for a basic kit any pro producing work for the web would be a fool not to buy in.

I've gone way out on a limb, and this may be blasphemy to some, but it's what I think. I'm not a DIT, producer, or director for high budget productions, nor do I have aspirations or dreams of becoming one. Just a middle-aged schmuck with stories to tell.
