  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SALT III- High Speed Lens Shootout "WFO" Results

hahaha. We'll fix that, thanks for point it out.

Some of the Canon files have been incorrectly labeled. I was looking at the Canon cine 24mm at T1.5 thinking that it was a stunning lens when I noticed on the board it says T2.8 - which makes much more sense.

Anyway, amazing test. Especially useful for all the people in parts of the world where you can't just walk into a store asking to see some cine lenses. Thanks for all the hard work!

Hey Sander,
Just fixed the issue. Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks to everyone who put time and resources into this. It's very helpful for us folks who don't live anywhere near a rental house and can't try out equipment on a whim.

Thanks so much to Evin,Will, Phil, the Matts, Ryan.
NICE WORK ;)))))

It would be fantastic to see Schneider Cine Xenar lll vs Zeiss Ultra Primes.

thanks

thanks

loving this test. nice work guys

Added a 3.2GB 2K download of the shootout video to my original post here. (Right Click, Save As)

If you don't want to view with the YouTube compression then get the clean H.264 version there. Otherwise please take it easy on my server and just watch the YouTube video.

thank you so much for doing this test - incredible research and time spent with it. thank you!

Im curious if anyone has done a test like this with Ultra Primes on Epic?

If anyone has I've never seen it. We will be doing more tests including zooms, anamorphics, and t2 glass in the future.

Since nobody from RED was able to answer my question regarding DRAGON, i might as well ask here:
Will S35 lenses (18-135mm t2.0) work 100% with that sensor? Will Angie 16-42 work 100%?
Thanks Guys.

ABSOLUTELY!!! It's not guaranteed you'll be able to get 6K out of them (depends on the image circle of the wides, in particular).

But @ 5K (which on Dragon will be approximately a S35mm image circle)? Absolutely.

The only set we tested out of the s35 lenses (obviously the FF Cp.2's and CN-E's will cover) that covered the entire range from 18mm up were the Leicas. It was a bit of a shock, but the 18mm K35 did not cover dragon. So in our testing (non accurate for Dragon) only Summilux-C's covered.

Thanks Matt.
It would be more pro from RED to answer important questions like that.
Thanks again.

Dragon specs haven't been announced yet and this isn't their thread so they won't post here.

I asked at RACON on Double Dragon thread 2 Times.
Just simple answer "we can not disclose" would do...
So unless if you are "Raving Fan-Boy" , your tech questions are Ignored ;-(

Actually, what would be more pro is for lens manufacturers to publish accurate coverage information for each lens.

All of the lenses tested will cover Dragon 5K and produce "optimal" results. Many of the sets cover, but like I said on the first page, when you are getting into the wide area of 18mm and beyond that's where you "may" run into troubles.

Zooms are a different beast all together and depending on their design you may find that some may not cover Dragon 6K at their widest and most telephoto lengths. Just depends on the glass.

If you have lenses that you are concerned about have them projected and reference the numbers published on the first page for what we "know" about Dragon formats today.

Personally, I think we'll see a 5.5K/5.6K format on Dragon to make the most of the S35 4-Perf image circle. Nearly everything we shot covered 6K HD (slightly larger than S35 4-Perf Full) and most covered 6K WS btw.
