  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RONIN-M or HELIX-JNR ?

I have the Jr. and it is a no brainer decision. I use it with my Epic, eye level, elbows on my ribs, long takes

Look,

At the end of the day, all current Hand Held Gimbal are surely a GIGANTIC step forward to what it was just 3 years ago... I choose the Ronin and have been truly happy about it, and I know I am going to be even more happy with the new Ronin-M...

But mostly I am just very happy I no longer have to deal with the Mini Gyros system... As that smile gets wiped out very quickly... :)

Tien says the Jr. can support up to 15 lbs. Well enough for a stripped down Epic. I do like this design better, however 95% of the footage I've seen from the Helix has been jittery/shakey as compared to the Ronin. It could be that more people own the Ronin in general, so the sample size is higher.

Any Helix owners here have non-slow motion, stable footage for longer takes here?

I'm looking to get a Helix (big one) which I'm going to be using with L'aigle Exhauss, and this thread is telling me to wait and think a bit more about it. Currently I have a Movi M10, but as a rental house it is somewhat difficult to train shooters since it takes lots of efforts/practices to balance nicely. I've been reading that Helix is much easier to balance than other systems, which is a huge plus for a rental house.

What do you all think?

Is somebody has already tried the Helix Jr with a Red Dragon? Is the weight ok?

Do the Helix Jr needs Standard camera plate or a heavy duty camera plate for the Dragon? I want to use a Weapon CF on it and I'm wondering if the Helix jr could be use with the Stnadard camera plate.

I used them both. The Ronin-M is very well done, but it is a pain due to that gimbal style. The Helix Jr has a more handmade/machinery feel to it, and it is a joy to use compared to the ronin. So much more effortless and ergonomically correct. Consider I used them both with Sony A7S, much lighter. And the ronin was killing me.

I own a Ronin and feel that the set up is fairly quick, and tuning via DJI app is a breeze so honestly I would recommend the Ronin M. Although a friend of mine owns a helix and raves about it, so its definitely a tough decision.

Ok but is somebody know if the standard camera plate for the Helix Jr is ok for the Weapon or we need to use the Heavy Duty camera plate (and I don't know yet if it could be used with the Jr).

interested to know that as well, could really be a great combo with the Raven .

I dunno about Europe, but everyone i know uses a DJI, I own one for the Epic, and at least 3 of my buddies own one. I wouldn't go for another brand simply because i know if something goes wrong with my rig, my buddy can help me out (we also lend each other batteries, extension arms etc).. also they work so well with the easy rig, which also seems to be the support of choice on shoots i go to.

Ronin + EasyRig + Serene, Don't look back

I hear you ;) I think it's a no brainer for a fully rigged Epic.
But if you strip down a lighter Raven with Lens + basic FF, you can get a very light and low profile package, at that point the Helix JR starts to look interesting. (It can also power the camera)
If only Letus had a show room here, that would make my life easier.

Lately I use a V Mount battery on a pouch linked to the Helix Jr, which in turn powers the my Epic. I can shoot all day, with two batteries.
I prefer a Tokina 11-16, and sometimes crop to 3K for tighter shots. It can handle the Canon 24-70 but focus is an issue. I tried an Ultra Prime with a wireless follow focus and I felt I was pushing too much the unit, any strange movement would result in total collapse.

Do you use a wireless FF in par with the Tokina as well?

yah problem is.. even with less weight.. still gonna need some support if you plan on doing long shots. also I perfer to have V-mount batteries on the handle bars of the gimbal, makes it heavier but can shoot allllllll day with no problems, use a bartech and Canon CNE primes on the camera mostly

NO, but the Set Up is so light that I can briefly use one hand to hold the Helix and with the other do minor adjustments in focus, obviously not during the shot. The Tokina works well in 3 different ranges of focus so I try not to go from one area to the other (I don't go from wide shot where the focus is at 3-10 mts to a C.U., or viceversa), at least in f5.6 onwards. I recently got Foolcontrol but I'm missing the RedLink or its alternative...

Good to know !
