  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rokinon Cine lenses are here!!

Which is better:
1) buy the cine version and use as is
2) buy the photo version and have modded by Dulcos
3) buy the cine version and have modded by Dulcos

I thought I read somewhere that the Dulcos gears are better but not sure, anyone care to chime in?

I had my 35 and 85 still versions modified by Duclos and they are great. In addition to de-clicking and a focus ring, the full mod includes an 80 mm step up ring and a lens cap, all for $250 each. I also bought an 8mm cine version and the rings are fine. The one thing the cine version has that my modified version don't is that the scale is on the side rather than the top (not a biggie). I am not sure what you'd have Matthew do to a cine version to modify it; it's already de-clicked and has a raised focus ring. If your lens can take the 80mm ring and cap (the 8mm can't), you can buy those and add them yourself.

As much as I appreciate the quality work Matthew Duclos does, it would be hard to argue for getting the still version modified over buying the cine versions, unless you are in a hurry and willing to spend more to get them sooner.

I'm in 2 minds about these lenses, I have the stills version of the 85 & 35mm & I use to own the 14, but found I was using my Tonkina 11- 16 more so offloaded it.

Anyway, given the release of the cine versions I'm wondering if to offload the above & buy a new set or just convert the stills and get a new 24mm cine. Pro lens gears can be had for about $80, iris can be de-clicked simply by removing the ball bearing ( apparently ). So really it seems too come down to if anything has changed optically which given the price point I suspect not. Either way these a great lenses for the $$$. Can or does anyone know otherwise ?

Terry in answer to your question about different brand names.

They are the same lenses the only difference is the logo. Samyang are not a big company & don't have the distribution network of the bigger names. To circumvent this issue, they rebrand their lenses with US & European photographic brands with existing distribution.

P.S. Now that 8mm !!! Given its price its almost impossible to resist .......but what the heck do you shoot with it ? Your dog sniffing the camera with a HUGE NOSE & a tiny head ; )

Mike - you should see how great my dog looks with his nose really big!! lol

I guess you can get Samyang in the US via B&H but I think I'm going to stick with Rokinon just becuase I already have 3 - I'm quirky that way . I intend to get the 24 cine and probably the 14 (even though I have a Tokina 11-16) just to see how well they'll match and to have a set of inexpensive "pseudo-cine" primes. I'd like a matching 50 but that hasn't yet been announced. I'll stick with my Canon for now.

I figured spending the money to have Duclos do my 35 and 85 made more sense than selling them at a discount and re-buying the cine version; not to mention I have them now.

Anyone have a .r3d (still) they can post with any of the cine 1.5s (wide open and then stopped to 2.8)? I want to do some pixel peeping (particularly with fringing wide open).

Will post reviews and R3Ds of the whole cine lineup next week when they arrive :)

great richard - please keep us posted. I think it can be a pretty nice set till upgrading to a proper cine lens pl set.

I picked up the 24mm Cine and 35mm Cine Rokinon lenses after reading about how happy people were with the still lenses. I haven't done a lot of testing with them yet. But, I was curious about one thing and just put them on my Epic to take a quick look. I am happy, and a bit surprised, to report there is no apparent image shift when changing focus direction. In my eyes, that has been the single worst drawback to using still lenses for motion work. Now, I can't wait for the release of the 85mm and 50mm Cine lenses.

So they've fixed the lens breathing issue then?

I thought I read from alot of people that the breathing issue is still present in the cine versions. If they've actually fixed that, these lenses are an absolute effing steal.

No, the breathing is still there. It is the lateral image shift that is gone.

Real quick, I am trying to determine weather my samyang 35mm cine a) is softer than it should or b) i am expecting too much out of an under 600 dollar lens (probably the case). Haven't really had the chance to fully test with zeiss, but I was just shooting all week with zeiss still glass and it seemed much sharper at 1.4.... any thoughts? Just trying to see if i should go for the 24mm cine...

I'm tryin' to get my handz-on 24mm (nikon). Hopefully i will get it tomorrow.
Once I have it, I will FEDEX my complete set to Evin G. for test (with his G series/salt test).... Stay Tu.....n... (lol)

A full set of the cine versions will be in on Monday with details up on Tuesday for everyone.

Hi Richard, will these be through Rokinon or Samyang? (Aware it doesn't really matter as essentially same lens). My 35 Rokinon Cine is friggin awesome. I'm chomping at the bits for an 85, 50 and of course the fisheye to complete.

Thanks man,

Pretty sure they will be Samyang. Coming directly from supplier.

Be sure to get the newer 8mm cine Samyang/Rokino/whatever. The older version didn't have a detachable hood and it started to creep in on the sides at 5K...

Phil I just shot a Skate Video with it and I think it vignettes somewhat at 5K - damn me i didnt have the time to test it thoroughly, wasnt my lens so I can't tell for sure - but that was with the fixed lens hood. So what you should definitely look for is what the one with detachable hood does... Does anyone have that revised version?
