  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rokinon Cine lenses are here!!

Thanks Kwan ! I think I'll grab a set too. They already revised the 8mm cine version with a removable lens hood. So it seems they could easily catch onto the marking idea as well!

Patrick - if I am not mistaken, the cinevized version without lens hood is still a couple months away. The still version with no hood is available for pre-order now. I have an 8mm cine on it's way to me right now (with built-in hood) and I am hoping I might be able to remove the hood (or have Duclos do it?).

I got my cine-modded 35 and 85 back from Duclos yesterday and I am delighted. I'll post more tomorrow.

buying mine tonight once b&h ordering is available. I know the rokinon 14 isn't the same as the Nikon 14mm 2.8 but I used the Nikon last night and love that focal length for wides. I will be getting all of the lenses they release as well!
Hey Patrick,
All I can say after this (Bokeh Test - 60fps), I will pick up whole set of Rokinon instead of returning this. This was just quick an dirty test (without planing) and win win for me....
Focus is pretty solid in 5K (I will do more test with chart once my AC kit returns).

Terry, the 8mm II is announced for the 13th of September by a german reseller who markets the samyangs under his own brand (walimex).
It's the same day for which the 24 and the 35 mm are being announced. I'm also pretty certain, that the 85 and 14 will follow soon.

These are supposed to go on sale for
8 f3.5 cine II for 360€ / $450
24 f1.5 cine for 620€ / $770
35 f1.5 cine for 460€ / $570

That's a difference of 20€ / $25 more per lens from the standard versions.
Only the 8mm II will have a minimalistic higher premium: 30€ (the first cine version with attached hood is 20€ more).
Even if it's not as good as a duclos mod, for 20€ more this is a no-brainer. Even their gear adapter rings cost 15€ hehehe.
I only find it weird how they seem to "loose" the 0.1 f-stops during the conversion process ;)

Can anyone post the US samyang pricings? I have the feeling these prices are going up ....

Focus rotation is same as Nikon lenses, infinity focus is at the clockwise end of focus ring rotation.
Non-extending outer barrel.

Hey Kwan, what is the focus rotation (estimation in degrees)? Do you know if it is increased from the stills versions?

...

For comparison, my Rokinon 35 stills lens has a focus throw of about 120 degrees, end to end. It has now been "cinevized" by Duclos but that does not include any reworking of the innards of the lens.

Interesting,
35mm Cine is about 135/140 degree, end to end.

OK - I think my estimate was off. They certainly looked the same from photographs so I got out my compass and protractor and I think Kwan's estimate also applies to the stills version.

So am I hearing they focus backwards like Nikon lenses? If so that's a huge bummer. That's not cine!

They focus just like my Canon lenses which, I believe (having never owned a Nikon) is NOT like Nikon.

Correct
To make this true Cine, you will have to reverse focus direction. The cost for such a conversion would be similar to the cost of a brand new professional motion picture lens.

I use edelktone Focus ONE PRO, It has reverse gear on the unit and can easily be put on use to work with any lenses with reversed focus direction.

As far as I know, it depends on mount. If you got the lens in a Nikon mount, it focuses in the Nikon direction. If you got it in Canon mount, it focuses in normal cine direction. I could be wrong here, as I haven't seen the cine versions, but I'm pretty sure this is the way the still versions work.

I don't have their stills version (so I don't know)
Yes It was 1.5 (for test purposes)

barrel movement is very smooth (unexpected)

Pis that a PL mount you have on the lens?

M

Are you saying, then, that Canon lenses focus "backwards" as well? (compared to cine lenses).

EDIT: I see there is further clarification. I thing Jason is correct. The pic above is not what I understand to be the case with the Canon mount cine lenses (from the photos). And it certainly isn't the case with my (now converted) Rokinon still lenses.

Anyone care to share firsthand opinions with this glass vs RPP or cp2's? Not mechanically, optically. Also, are these cine versions going to be all uniform length?
