  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Resolve on PC

The upcoming X79/Sandy Bridge-E platform seems ideal for Resolve. For larger budgets, a multi-socket Xeon E7 systems (upto 40 cores). With lots and lots of GPUs, of course. By the time Resolve is released, NVIDIA may have their Kepler/GTX600 GPUs out. AMD will certainly have HD 7000 GPUs out by then, but I suppose CUDA will continue to be a USP for NVIDIA. Unless Resolve for PC has gone DirectCompute.

I think I may hold out for Ivy Bridge and Thunderbolt support before I upgrade. Unfortunately it seems that the first round of Ivy Bridge processors won't have Thunderbolt support.

Hi, we are scheduled to release Resolve on Windows in Q1 2012. It's looking like you won't need more than 4GPUs.
It was demonstrated at IBC last week with four GTX580 GPUs using CUDA and i'm told one demo trying to slow the playback down gave up adding nodes after 40. Playback was still real time HD.
I will post specs of recommended and approved hardware later in the year.

Ivy Bridge is due in Q2, after Resolve for Windows ships. Also, it is restricted to quad-core, is only a die shrink and the focus is on Processor Graphics (where Intel is being slaughtered by AMD) and power consumption (where it will really shine is in notebooks and especially Ultrabooks) rather than CPU performance. So, one would expect the Sandy Bridge-E 6-core CPUs with X79 (quad-channel memory, 36 PCI-e lanes) to continue being the performance flagships. That is, till Ivy Bridge-E pops up in late 2012, but that's a long way off. As for Thunderbolt, it seems like most of the industry is gravitating towards USB 3.0 and Intel isn't helping by leaving it off their own chipsets (instead integrating native USB3.0). Should be some motherboards shipping with Thunderbolt, hopefully.

That is fantastic news. Looks like even a single GTX 580 GPU will be adequate for most usage scenarios!

I'm really glad there is a Windows Version, I'd love to see what the fuss is all about :)

The next high end GPU series will be a MAJOR improvement for computing (AMD 79xx - 'Tahiti', Geforce 670/680 - 'Kepler').
Both are switching to 28 nm, and AMD will switch from VLIW to SIMD architecture (more info)
They should arrive in quantities around when Resolve ships.

the right move from BMD..
regarding windows os we'll have two grading options now, resolve and adobe with their purchase of Iridas..

the only sad thing about x79 chipset is that it will have only four slots for memory, 16GB max these days.. as with x58 we had the easy option for 24GB... I know that mother board prototypes that where shown a few months ago doesn't represent the final motherboards that will go through the market.. but, hopefully they aren't only four slots.. thunderbolt isn't a deal breaker for me.. USB3 would be fine for two or three Redcode tracks.. and for DaVinci its fine as you mostly use one track to grade..

There will be 8 slots in some X79 motherboards. The entry level ones will have 4 slots - 1 for each channel. Besides, 8GB sticks are getting popular. Patriot will soon release a very impressive G2 series 32GB kit populating 4 slots.

Intel showed off a fair number of X79 motherboards at IDF this past week, the high end ones had 8 RAM slots and 5 PCI-e slots.

Thanks, Yes, I noticed this after taking deeper look at x79 boards msi released, amazing, and thunderbolt seems to be coming to these boards soon, also found the announcement for the windows version of davinci on BMD website, a quick screen shot below..
I Love how they mention "Massive GPU Power"

very excited, also with Adobe's new stuff.. an X79 build would be very with these new software.. I have to plan the build very carefully..

Can someone answer a question for me? Now that Resolve is moving to PC (just after I bought a MacBook Pro.. The Gods hate me...) How well does it... What do you all call it? Round Trip from Adobe Premiere? My goal is this:
Edit in premiere
Import timeline into Resolve.. Make magic (Not the level of Jake or Mike, but a little majic nonetheless) and then have those little gems appear back in Premiere for output.

Files would be Cineform and R3D for the most part.

(Jake. I have to reply to one thing you said.... My shrink WAS helping actually.. Til he sent me a bill and the insurance would not cover! So now I am on my own!)

Jay

Jay,
Resolve 8.2 Lite Beta for windows was just release. Dit you have time to check it out?
Are you able to read Cineform files into this version?

I am running W7 and this beta is running pretty good. The only thing is I am not able to read cineform mov/avi files. This may be a limitation to the full version but cannot find any information about that.
