  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best film director

Terrence Malick

Kubrick, Kurosawa, Miyazaki, Hitchcock and some others come to mind as well.

Among new, younger directors, Aronofsky, Nolan and PTA are standouts for me.

Terrence Malick

Imagine the surprise when I see a thread about the "best director" and Tom is a poster, could have never figured the above name would come into play :-)

there's no such thing as the "best" anything, certainly not a movie director, so many of them have accomplished so many different things...

Back to the real world>>>

Somehow there is a guy that claims himself

that he is the best living movie director today at this Spring 2009:

LARS VON TRIER>>>Cannes "Antichrist" Press Conference>>>

The BEST DIRECTOR = a MADMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, don't trust a MADMAN, go for it yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could be also a BIG joke and that topic would really lead us in so many jokes around that I couldn't resist

of smiling all the time as a MADMAN or to get my stomach working properly...>>>

After ALL (jokes) the BEST film DIRECTOR that's just ME (or terribly sorry that's YOU):

A RED ONE USER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"SS always sounds funny as a director (also you should know what does SS mean here in German speaking world years ago),

(fighting himself HARDLY to say something convenient), or all that theater sounds as a big joke,

even though if you want to be "commercial" and that' s not so charming

image at all TODAY, it could be just a joke as it mentioned before.

Maybe if you get a picture from all that (film) money manipulations or (manipulators) that's maybe

only your "mother" or your "wife" would desire to hear or to get it anyway ."

This is your brain on drugs?

What the hell are you trying to say?

Steven Spielberg for me.

I think there is no one that has a more natural instinctive way of 'getting' how a scene should play out and be put in visuals then him.
His movies often create magic experiences. How he tells a story, going from E.T. to Jaws to Schindler's List to Minority Report to ... it' fantastic, how he gets the craft. I didn't like 1941, The Terminal and Indy 4 though.
Indy 4 just plain sucked.
Oh well...

Other great directors:

Stanley Kubrick
Darren Aronofsky
Lars Von Trier
Buster Keaton
Mel Gibson
Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Baz Luhrmann
...

Martin scorsese, Roman Polanski, Michael mann, woody allen, Alex Payne, Ken Loach, Mike Leigh, Robert Redfrod, David Gordon Green, David Fincher, Dave Cornenberg, Sydeny Lumet, PTA, Duplass Brothers! and the others that have been named in this thread.

My faviouret, WOODY ALLEN - who else has had a career like he has. A film a year for 30 years with compleate creative control. More Academy Award nominations than anybody. His films from the mid 80's to early 90's were his best.

Exactly my thoughts (Minus your dislike of the films mentioned and I haven't seen 1941) I wish Steven did audio commentaries.

Michelangelo Antonioni or Akira Kurosawa

Stanley Kubrick and John Ford made some fine movies too.
