  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Resolve on PC

Here is the press release: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/press/pressdetails/?releaseID=25111

Support for up to 16 GPUs with the Windows version!

Also, existing Resolve owners can download the Windows version for free when it's available. Dongles will work on both Mac and Win boxes!

GPU issues = solved. I'm suddenly tempted to build a 12-core box with 4 liquid-cooled GTX580's (maybe 590's)... I can't really explain it, just very tempted. ;)

Linux version has been a no-go for us in the past here. The pricing structure and requirement to buy as an over-priced turn-key system was always a turn off. And unless working in a DPX-centric workflow, the Linux version lacked appeal in terms of codec and format support.

How long before people will start bragging about their Resolve set ups? :-)
I'm as happy, as the next guy about the prospect of using the latest and greatest GPUs and not having to worry about Apples latest whims and picks.
Said that, the list of missing features and bugs in Resolve is still extensive. Brute force takes you so far. I'd like to see BM spending a little more time on harnessing that power and making Resolve a more productive tool... and, may be, supporting Tangent Element?

If you had a post house centered completely on, say, R3D or DPX or Avid DNxHD files, this could work very efficiently; they seem to do this pretty well at CO3.

There is no such thing in the "real" facility world. The Alexa is a real force in the industry at the moment, and is dominant in high end television. If you work in the mainstream industry, you cannot center completely on any format now, and that would include R3D, DPX, DNxHD, and ProRes, among many, many others (H.264, XDCam, Cineform, SR next year, and you-name-it). We live in a multiformat world, like it or not. In the case of Co.3, like other facilities, they convert between file formats all the time just to accommodate the Linux Resolve. That is not a good situation, it is, rather, a forced situation. One of the main factors in large facilities adopting the Linux version of Resolve is their previous investment in DaVinci 2K's and the panels supplied with those systems. Blackmagic will allow you to continue to use the 2K panels, but only on Linux. That instantly creates a $30K cost differential between staying with Linux and moving to the Mac, and in the future, to Windows.

My guess is that the Windows port is the first step towards what Blackmagic ultimately wants to do, which is to kill the Linux product, as it is the only product they have on that platform and requires a high level of support for a rather small percentage of their market. My further prediction is that Linux Resolve will be EOL by this time next year. I have absolutely no proof or even any indication that's the case, but I do feel it's inevitable, even given Blackmagic statements to the contrary.

Can someone answer a question for me? Now that Resolve is moving to PC (just after I bought a MacBook Pro.. The Gods hate me...) How well does it... What do you all call it? Round Trip from Adobe Premiere? My goal is this:
Edit in premiere
Import timeline into Resolve.. Make magic (Not the level of Jake or Mike, but a little majic nonetheless) and then have those little gems appear back in Premiere for output.

Files would be Cineform and R3D for the most part.

(Jake. I have to reply to one thing you said.... My shrink WAS helping actually.. Til he sent me a bill and the insurance would not cover! So now I am on my own!)

Jay,

PP - Resolve - PP is still a little clunkier than we all would like. Its doable, but not as great as the XML roundtrip FCP - Resolve - FCP. Undoubtedly you are aware of PPs not supporting the latest version of XML as being the culprit here.

I think we are all holding our collective breaths waiting for Adobe to support FCP XML 5. Then it will be golden. For now there are many well documented routes that have one off-ramp or another. (PP - FCP - Resolve for example, or via EDL -bleck ). But it really just a matter of time until Adobe fixes this I think.

And what of porting Revival to Mac, seems an obvious move ?

We have no interest in Resolve on PC, sorry. Its a great tool and best off n mac or Linux for our work.

I know for fact that Adobe is working hard on this issue as I type this.

Wow man, you really seem to get angry very, very easily. Beer is a mind altering, and legal substance, as is wine, cognac, etc. I don't ever drink or use drugs of any kind, but my favorite mind altering substance is my wife's smile.

Ever watched Jay's videos that he hosts? He's obviously a well-meaning, good-natured guy. He meant nothing dark or evil by his post.
You're correct. I get upset, when someone insults me (Mike), after I specifically say I do not want to participate in the conversation.
Unlike you, I get upset, when someone makes a statement (Jay) and then he says he couldn't care less, if that may affect other people. But that's just me... I guess, if he's swell guy on tape, then he must be above approach and he can say whatever he wishes...
Why don't try explain your alcohol use philosophy to a member of AA, if you think that's an acceptable explanation. I'm sure they will have a good laugh too...

Adobe has really changed in my opinion.. They listen, and the are aggressive.. Of course with FCP biting it pretty hard in terms of their "new" release, I have no doubt Adobe smells blood in the water, and they are trying to move on it.

Adobe and Avid both. And from what I can see, they seem to be succeeding.

Adobe released today Ppro 5.1.1 update solving xml out to resolve, details are posted on the adobe forum, go check it out and try it.

Finaly here it is! Davinci on WIN

Hi Denisa,
What hardware configuration are you running? Planning to built a system dedicated to Resolve.
Thank you.

The upcoming X79/Sandy Bridge-E platform seems ideal for Resolve. For larger budgets, a multi-socket Xeon E7 systems (upto 40 cores). With lots and lots of GPUs, of course. By the time Resolve is released, NVIDIA may have their Kepler/GTX600 GPUs out. AMD will certainly have HD 7000 GPUs out by then, but I suppose CUDA will continue to be a USP for NVIDIA. Unless Resolve for PC has gone DirectCompute.

WINning! Hadn't heard about this till today! Sounds like Adobe + Resolve on PC for the WIN!

(If I had more cheesy Windows puns, I'd use them.)

...lots of very cool stuff happening lately.

Does anyone know if there Is an evaluation version?

Resolve Lite is free and full featured. That's about as good an evaluation as you can get.

If you're talking about a Windows version, you'll have to wait at least a few months. It doesn't exist yet, at least outside of Blackmagic Design's offices.
