I was wondering if the 8k weapon could use rehoused hasselblad lenses like the Alexa 65 does? And from the Alexa65 page the lenses sound like the new H lenses? I'm just wondering because we have a set of these and if there was an option to rehouse and use it on a weapon 8k would be so cool..

Arri's rehoused 65mm glass do indeed appear to be based on the "H" series glass.

They also have a "vintage" set based on the older CF/FE primes (ie "V").

We built a small CF/FE set of Hassy's already, and had them cinemodded by RP lens. They work very well with a Mirex EOS tilt adapter.

At the moment I am not modding the Hassies... I am buying the older CF/FE as Nick has done but I am using a mount converter. Maybe I will get more serious about cine mods later

oh thanks, they make a hassie to pl mount? or are you using eos or something?

im actually shocked how cheap they are, don they have a shutter inside the lens though? or am i reading that wrong.

FE dont have a shutter. And are often (but not always) a stop faster.

Why buying hasselblad lenses ? most of them have slow f-stop and the f-stops are all over the place. thats one of the draw backs cinematographers talk about when using the new Alexa 65 and arris lenses. For Red 8k I think it would be better to rehouse vintage or really nice still glass they will cover as the 8k is basically full frame. You even can buy things like k35, FD's, leics I think they would be more suited then hasselblad.

Flavors of ice cream. Different ones. K35 coverage also isn't going to be "wonderful" for 8K.

The allure of medium format glass stems from center to edge resolution without vignetting or distortion. And there are some great MF lenses out there. There might be some lenses that vignette heavily on Weapon 8K Dragon 8K FF. Some may even like that look overall. Everything down to the bokeh and CA can become an "hot topic" near the edge and corner of the frame. MF glass covers handsomely and you shouldn't see some of that coma or misshaped bokeh for those who don't like it. It all needs to be tested to find your preference really.

I'm doing both FF35 and MF glass on 8K Weapon, both still and cinema style lenses.

You can get a 2.8 set pretty easily:

50mm FE 2.8
80mm FE 2.8
110mm FE F2
150mm 2.8

that's great! please do!
i wonder if duclos will declick the iris on these. im looking at F's without electronics, would love to know what adapter models you like, besides the astar. there seems to be a few pl and eos ones. one of my main things are trying to keep a filter format universal.

The FE's don't need to be declicked. You just press a button down and iris is smooth.

The CF's however are more complicated - the internal shutter makes controlling the iris sometimes a bit complicated. Duclos, I believe, thought fixing these mechanics was too time consuming (ie expensive). However RP lens did end up doing this for me on several CFs, but it's generally a pain.

oh, good to know, are F's the same as the FE's as far as smooth iris?

In general is good to stay away form purchasing "LS" (leaf shutter) MF lenses if the intend is to re-house, or even if it isn't, as not only they are by nature usually slower do to how the internal elements of the LS system is conceived in favor of a higher shutter in still photography, and taking away from the speed of the lens, amongst few other very specific technical aspects, which are not directly related to the use of the lenses with an adaptor in Motion Picture, unless of course you intend to Cine Mod them, and then here there are several issues and ways to go about it...

In today's technologically advanced Labs almost anything is possible, and surely it is possible to Cine Mod any lens, but at what cost?

An example is that of Cine-Modding Still Glass without a physical Manual Iris, but with only an internal electronic one, here the process of Cine-Modding becomes more complex and more expensive and also more time consuming, but for some lenses like the Hasselblad HC series become swell worth it... Expensive, (very) expensive, but worth it... :)

Expect some serious news coming next year... Or sooner about new sets of Re-Housed MF glass and a none re-housed one too... Coverage intended for RED WEAPON FF 8K nearing 50mm Image Circle coverage... :)

I´m surprised about Arri´s choice of H lenses. While I can see the vintage zeiss glass perform nicely I don´t understand the "H" decision. They also skipped the 120mm macro (which is fine btw) and the 210mm. At least my copy of the 50-110 flares like hell (and if we use it we use it for exactly this reason). There is distortion on the wide side, especially the 35mm, at lot of CA as well. While sharp and clean all these lenses are kind of lacking soul in my opinion, no close focus ability. We still have and work with this system but I find myself using the old Mamiya dinosaur more and more. YMMV.

Cheers

Ulf

The tricky part is getting really wide FF35 lenses to cover the 8K sensor. One answer is to use TS lenses in this case, like the Canon 17TS, which have a bigger image circle than standard wide primes. MF glass doesn't get very wide for FF or 8K Dragon, not much out there in MF glass in focal lengths in the 16-28mm range.

Nick, looking forward to your guide. Thanks in advance for putting it together.
I also echo what Nick and Phil and Ketch say about using non internal shutter lenses. I am staying with the FE's.

And I am using a Hassie to PL mount adaptor that was not expensive and works great.
