  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rehoused Hasselblad lenses for 8k?

Honestly there is very little difference in look than my canon lenses (50mm f1.2 and 85mm f1.2) when i tested them side by side. Sure the res is way higher with the back and the latitude better, but showing the shots to my colleagues - (with a the 645 crop to confuse them) nobody could tell the difference.
I belive the medium format look is marketing bullshit- from my experience of shooting stills for 20 years. Sure, a 6x7 film camera with a fast lens has a unique look, but a lot of the tiny slice of focus look got lost when medium format shrunk to the small 645 format.
So, saying that has lenses on a tiny format (even the weapon is tiny) will look cool with the hassleblad lenses at only f2.0- it will look just like a normal 35mm lens at f2.0- probably a lot softer. You are only using a tiny part of the coverage- all the claimed "mojo" is lost.

I have the 110 f2 as well as the rest of the contax collection still, so happy to run a test for someone. I brought these and believed the look was special, but was bitterly disappointed.

Don't waste you money. I challenge anyone to find a medium format shot in my shots in my portfolio (www.paulrossjones.com). They are in there, mixed up with 35mm.

My older shots are shot with an h1/2 withe a p45/ then i got a p40 (cropped chip). but my most recent work i have shot with a contax 645 with a phase p65+ back.
The contax has the best look with the f2 80mm lens and the full frame 645 chip. the has 110 f2 has a cool look, but very hard to focus.

but i don't use the format anymore as dslrs have great files and lenses. The difference between a good fast 35mm lens and the 80 f2 and 110 f2 is very small. I'm talking about the focus drop off and the overall look. They are different, but i wouldn't say nicer.

No, its EASY to outresolve the sensor. I think Probst put Dragon at 100lp/m....which is basically a Super Speed wide open. Whereas an Alexa has larger pixels, so generally needs sharper glass for max resolution (as far as I understand it).

Great information guys, by the way what is the crop factor of a lets say 24mm "H" Hasselblad lens? Maybe the Alexa65's sensor covers the width of the lens so it might be reasonable to use these lenses but what about the 8k weapon?
 
One reason to invest in older MF lenses is if amy future camera comes out that has a sensor larger than Vista or Weapon 8K (40 X20mm)
The Dystraflex Vista vision camera and the ILM Vista camera ususally used Nikon still glass and no one (including Dykstra and Lucas) seemed to complain about resolution or falloff so everyone should be OK with full format (24 X36mm) still glass.
I am simply interested in some Hassie glass for the future.

Exactly. One has to imagine a 65mm RED may well be announced in next year or two. Would seem like a logical next step. 12K.
 
i just got my 150mm F f2.8, and first of all, wow!

it's a huge heavy lens, but just throwing on my 5d it is tack sharp and really beautiful, i dont even know how to explain it.
the fall off and bokeh is extremely pleasing.

now to start another collection of lenses!

Haha, no sweat. We've also found Hassys to be very beautiful.

I´m afraid you´re right, but I´d rather like to see the pixel race stop at 9K with larger pixels - more than enough for every still image. Would love the bigger sensor size though.

i have to say i really like how the iris works too, smooth if you want, or half clicks, it would be kind of nice for cine lenses as im always like "did this stop move?"
i almost freaked out because the iris wasnt working at all, until i hit the release button on the side! phew.
so i have a F version, and the serial numbers start like the mk1 speeds, with an "Nr" i always wonder what that mean but couldnt find anything on it researching.

another thing is these lenses really dont need to rehoused or civevised at all, i have a B70-77mm filter ring for the front($10), the focus throw seems to be like 300 degrees, the iris is smooth, mount adapter($40)…done

Exactly. We added Cordvision fronts to ours, and had RP lens add focus gears, and that was it! Ready to go!!

Are you sure about that?

I always was under impression Hassy's covered Alexa 65mm.

Don't forget, Medium Format is basically 2 x Vista Vision, or 4 x s35.

Alexa 65 is 3 x s35 (stacked vertically...so very similar).

Hasselblad is 56mm x 56mm. A bit wider, and almost 2.5 times taller than Alexa 65mm. See this awesome article by FD times.

That said, MF digital backs appear to have employed various cropped sensors over the years:

37x37mm sensor = 1.5x crop
43x32mm sensor = 1.3x crop
48x36mm sensor = 1.17x crop (ie. twice the area of 35mm full frame)

Don't buy the 140-280mm zoom, has many problems. I use H CF lenses since I had the Scarlets and they are awesome! The official lenses of the IMAX cameras.
I really like to see an r3d from the Weapon and the 38mm CF Biogon and also the Distagon 30mm.

Alexa 65 lenses rehoused from HC series.

which lenses covers 56x56mm from this list?
 
Also the first Hasselblad HC lenses were build for H1 that was a film camera using 120 film (6x4.5), so they should cover 56mm.
