  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDucation

And yes - we do want to find a mechanism to get classes going in all parts of the USA and all over the world - it's more of a logistics and bandwidth issue with everything else on our plate, than from lack of desire... the desire is certainly there. We all want people to know what we know about shooting and post with RED - we need to find a way for classes to happen without REDs direct involvement in all of them... a training mechanism where those that want to teach RED can learn from our recommended pathways, (which are quite easy and logical these days as many of you know) is what we are planning, in addition to all the other work going on on multiple fronts at RED.

Actually, we have people in each class of all levels of experience with the RED and RED workflows - from people that have been shooting RED for years, work as professional DPs and Post Pros, to people that have never touched a RED before taking the class. All has seemed to work out very well to have the mix of experience and skills. Makes for a very enjoyable week of open learning at all levels... we all learn from the teachers, the TAs and the various peoples experiences from all over the world with the REDs.

Yes, and I was one of those people who'd never touched a RED before taking the course and I stand by my advice.

I've given a small demo at REDucation on the use of the gray card in shooting digital cinema. However, there are those that that think it's a waste of time. It is the quickest and easiest way to insure you get neutral color (going into post) when shooting with RED. I use this daily on the feature, Atlas Shrugged, and it allows the DP to see clean color. I ran across this video by Alan Daviau, check it out, and use the gray (Von Card) card.

RED training class for Educators.

Continuing on the success of our REDucation classes - I have been mentioning an expansion strategy that will allow us to take what we teach in those classes to many more people worldwide.

Here's what we are thinking - To try and take the REDucation classes on the road, especially internationally is not feasible from a resources standpoint internal to RED, so what we are planning is to host a few specialized classes here in Los Angeles, designed specifically for people that are teaching RED in Universities, Film Schools, Trade schools, etc.

We will have very small groups with in depth instruction on RED Production and Post Production techniques that can be scaled and taught in many different ways; in various teaching environments from large University and Film Schools with full DI facilities and 4k viewing theaters, to smaller seminar rooms and teaching labs.

We will target having the latest released equipment and software tools from RED, along with the most current methods for production and post production for all types of RED work - from full on big budget Feature Films, through high end Episodic TV work, Indie feature work, Commercials, Music Videos, Documentaries, etc.

The cost of the course will be determined by the amount of Educators that we teach in each session. We will make it as cost effective as possible, while covering the cost of labor, venue, all the gear, etc.

The type of feedback we are looking for is how many people are interested in this way of learning the RED to then take back to your Education environment, what things are you looking to learn and where you will be teaching (or are currently teaching)

Looking forward to seeing where this goes - based on what we've learned from REDucation classes so far - I'm anticipating good things.

I'll start a new thread on the General RED area of the Forum in addition to here, since this is new info, and we want to get a lot of feedback as we move in this direction.

Thanks

+ Ted

This is great news and we are looking forward to REDUCATING some of our International groups very soon.We have many requests in Mexico ,Central and South America to get some events moving. These guys are hungry to learn more about RED in all aspects. We are very excited to see this move forward. And as always you have the full support of the Maxx Digital Team.

Then choose the normal REDucation?

The real reason for not doing either the normal or the school REDucation would come down to cost. Being a student, flying to LA to take the course is rather low on the priority list right now.

If/when it comes to Toronto, then I might check it out

As someone across the pond (in UK) who is always looking to further his working knowledge and production experience of RED I look forward to the eventual benefits of this program. I may not be a REDucator now but evenually - who knows?

Will there be a list maintained of people who have officially gone through this training, organised by country, with links to where you can sign up for classes with them? Maybe even with upcoming dates if there a quite a few in each country?

If you ever plan on a normal REDucation in the UK let me know.

Just checked with the Logistics team for REDucation - they tell me we are almost full, have about 5 spots left for the class next week... So if you have been thinking about coming, next couple days is good time to register up. We have a very interesting group coming from all over the world, and Michael and I a looking forward to fun and productive week of learning.

I am one of those from "all over the world", leaving tomorrow for the long trip to LA...

Sorry I can't be available this time around to help teach... but I will say that those of you who have signed up are in for an outstanding experience.

Ted, Michael and crew - hope to see you next time!
