REDucation

Great pix Casey! Really captures the fun and comradery of REDucation. Was a really rewarding week to see all the students dive in to the RED pool and come out the other end really knowing their stuff!

+ Ted

Thanks Ted. It was a great week.

Funny. I've been to NAB for the past 12 years in a row, and this year, the week went by, and I didn't even realize I never made it to the show floor.

Everything that was important to me was at the Tropicana.

Thanks, once again, to everyone who was involved - its a great program and I hope many more people take advantage of it.

Hello All,

Can anyone please tell me the location of the December 6-11 REDucation in Los Angeles?

I'm guessing:
RED STUDIOS Hollywood (formerly Ren-Mar Studios)
846 N Cahuenga Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90038

Also can anyone please recommend reasonable accommodation near by?

Regards,
Robert

I've been sidelined, but finally here are some long awaited images from REDucation #004, it's graduation time. I really had the best time with this class, maybe it was because of Vegas, and we know, what goes on in Vegas...

These are photos up close and personal of the REDucation class #004. I'm a bit biased, but this is good stuff.

The Future of REDucation

The Future of REDucation

After a very successful first run of 4 REDucation classes, We've been taking a hard look at where to take our education efforts from here…

What's abundantly clear, is that we need to empower more people worldwide to have the ability to learn and spread the knowledge of what we've been teaching; to reap the benefits of learning what we've learned along the way creating and evolving the RED ONE and seeing so many projects created with a true high resolution tool.

As those that are shooting RED and posting RED on a regular basis know, The RED ONE is the simplest camera to shoot, post and deliver the highest quality images on. Now it's time to teach everyone that doesn't know this yet or is not using the correct simple steps to achieve what we all know is possible with the streamlined RED shooting, post and delivery workflows.

Here's the short term changes we are in the process of making now.

The next 2 classes in August and December will be held at RED Studios Hollywood (as long as production jobs don't fill up every last stage during the class days, then we will then teach at an alternative location in LA - the plan is to host them at RED Studios)

We are working on streamlining the classes and focusing on running REDucation at our home base at RED Studios for now, where the most resources to teach and screen 4k will be close at hand, and invite people from all over the world to come to spend a week of learning with us in Hollywood.

We are canceling the NYC class we had scheduled, and working on a new strategy to make REDucation something that can be taught worldwide without the massive resource and labor drain it has on the staff at RED when we take the classes on the road. We need to insure our main focus stays on delivering the next generation RED cameras that are in development now. More to come on this as it develops.

What's important for now is that we will be continuing the immersive experience that REDucation provides at RED Studios Hollywood, as there is nothing that can replace a fully hands on learning experience for 5 full days. (Just ask the Students that have taken the class) More info as we re-tool to host more classes, workshops and other forms of learning at the Studio.

Thanks for reading and for all the enthusiasm for REDucation so far - more good things coming soon.

Cool.

I was disappointed I couldn't make it to any of these courses. I have lots experience teaching and not so much with video work, but I think there are a few cool new ways to spread the knowledge.

Ted - perhaps there is something to be learned from Apple with their Certified Instructors in their pro apps. You could let people take a series of classes and work their way up to being able to teach one or more parts of the RED experience. Just a thought. I can't help but think you guys are already thinking in that direction. Exciting times! I am hoping that by the time I get my Scarlet, there will be some education specifically directed at that.

Thanks so much.

Hi Terry,

You are on the right track with what Apple has done to be able to scale their training efforts worldwide - I don't want to get everyone too excited yet, as these efforts are all in tandem with our main job of creating and supporting and getting the word out on the products that RED sells and is developing. But just know we are working on this along with everything else in the RED world.

I also want to mention that with these next steps we are planning on keeping our top notch teaching staff, lead by Michael Cioni of LightIron, and the team of experienced REDucation TA's and logistics staff that have made the previous classes successful. (as much as they are available if they are not on RED gigs that week of course :-)

Great to hear, Ted. Keep us posted! And let me say that if Michael Cioni is the model, you are on the right track. I have seen him speak at two different RED days and he is a great presenter.

Ted,
No NYC :( ?
I know a heck of a lot of folks who are using the Red in the NYC/Tri State area and would benefit from the class.
Best Regards,
Woody

Thank you TED for the update.
As Terry said you're on the right track, and I agreed 100% - Cioni's presentations are killer.
Love your work guys.
Keep coming - see you on the next REDucation

Ted,

I'll second that.

I'm looking at taking a REDucation course next year, and I am wondering if a person with little background in film and/or video production would be lost at the get-go. Are there any recommended prerequisites? Is it only for people who are working with REDs on a daily basis?

Everyone has to start somewhere, and I would love for REDucation to be mine.

In my opinion the course will mean more to you if you've already worked with RED.

If you don't have much experience my advice would be to learn as much as you can before you go to the course, so you have the mental framework in place to put the REDucation information into.

Get Noah Kadner's book, and Jay A Kelly's RED 101 DVD. Learn Final Cut Pro, Avid, download and learn REDrushes,REDcine, REDalert, clipfinder, possibly r3d data manager and after effects.
That's a lot of learning.

Good luck

Brendan

Actually, we have people in each class of all levels of experience with the RED and RED workflows - from people that have been shooting RED for years, work as professional DPs and Post Pros, to people that have never touched a RED before taking the class. All has seemed to work out very well to have the mix of experience and skills. Makes for a very enjoyable week of open learning at all levels... we all learn from the teachers, the TAs and the various peoples experiences from all over the world with the REDs.
