  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Players are shipping!!!

Edit -- oops silly me, there's the codec, in my junk mail folder... Guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow morning..

Cool.

See how it does at same bitrate as an x264 encode. Grainy vs clean.
Bitrate is where the rubber meets the road!

RedRay and SEiKI ...

RedRay and SEiKI ...

Jeff,

Any joy on connecting RR to SEIKI? ... how's the UHD TV footage looking and playing back?

Just getting started with the RRencoder stuff now. I'll get the RR connected to the SEIKI later today, I have to relocate the SEIKI to do it. FWIW, the output from the RR to my 75" Samsung 1080p is stunning. I just hung that one on the wall less than 10 minutes before my REDRAY showed up! If you look at my REDRAY pic in the first post, you can see a reflection of a 4' level in the RR box... That's what I used to level the wall mount for the Samsung 75" F6400, HAHA. No calibration or anything yet, just turned off auto motion garbage and dialed down the backlight a touch, set display to movie mode and Warm1 color. Looks pretty darn good out of the box! All in all, awesome TV, but wish it had UHD resolution. Oh well...

Going to play with encoding various clips and possibly some longer stuff. Play it back on the RR player...

I had no idea the RR was arriving yesterday, no ship notification from RED. I bet that was intentional, they just wanted people to be surprised. :)

I will also have a 55" Sony 4K display here in another week or two. Thanks to a client that really, really likes me. :)

Jeff I love and hate you ;)

Same here. I'm not sure if I'm ready to use it yet. No 4k TV or Projector just yet, just my 2k projector. Maybe I should sell it and wait for the Red Ray Pro version?

Yes, they are shipping. I know because I have one. It arrived about 3 hours ago, but haven't had a chance to dig into it until now. Just unboxed it and I'm about to hook it up. :)

Someone remind me on what Red was stating as the bitrate for their 4K material ?

Redcine-X only at this point until Red releases it as part of the SDK for others to implement.

Is it a red only software codec, or can we export from resolve and other apps?

It was hinted that 3rd party apps would be able to encode to it one day. Which would be nice to finish through say Adobe Media Encoder for instance.

However, .RED is brand spanking new and it might take a heartbeat for that to get implemented.

What's really sweet, at least to me, is that Red Cine-X Pro is free and the RREncoder plugin is very inexpensive, so Red's making it super easy for folks to get going right away and start encoding in .RED.

Never used redcine X For ONLINE, normally I do small corrections there and use my editor of choice. How is the relationship between redcine X and both CS6 and FCP X? I assume it can import an XML and keep dissolves and audio? What about transparencies for graphics? What can we actually "transport" to Redcine X? This is an important part of the equation...

I remember-correct me if I'm wrong- redcine X imports tiff sequences? Do we need to export our edits as 4K tiffs from our editor of choice for final output in Redcine X to .red?

Now probably is time for one of your excellent instructional videos RED TEAM!

Was wondering about this myself. All of my past projects were done on Adobe and I'm hoping there's a way to export back to Redcine to then encode to .RED.

I wish someone with their name in red letters would post about this.

Woow that's awesome news,
Cool

I think RRencoder would have been free also if it was just up to Jim/Jarred vision but they somehow needed to make it a paid license (symbolic price) so each encoder and encoded files could be associated to one account, for DRM purposes etc.

Also it is too bad .RED files will only play on a RRay and not from a computer but it is again the only way to make it as secure as possible DRM wise and this is quite important if it is to become a new standard for feature distribution !

Jeff,

Do you have to encode to 2.5MB/s .RED file and then play it back on the REDRAY, or does it accept R3D directly?
