  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

Will there be subtitle metadata support? Both in 2D and 3D (z-space alignment that can dynamically shift to accommodate each scene/shot would be amazing).

Would be great to be able to upload a subtitle z-space metadata file, along with as many different language subtitles as you wanted to support.

Cheers,

Paul :)

Theatrical Sales reports are delivered directly to the Channel Owner/Distributor, hourly, daily, and week ending.

I guess no one can really solve the problem of making sure theatre owners do not fudge on declared ticket sales / butts-in-the-seat correlation. Or is someone tying into the POS systems at Theatres as well?

P3 Plea...

P3 Plea...

So what is the deal with rec709 and P3 (or other wide color variant)?

If I understand correctly the cinema targeted projector/player combo will support the DCI spec which is P3. So that would lead one to believe that at least one iteration of the RED distribution solution portfolio can go beyond rec 709. Soooo, is limiting support to rec 709 color in the announced RedRay unit a hardware limitation, is it just an easier place to start out of the gate with firmware updates down the road, ???

Roadmap notes? Or is this a cards close to the vest issue for competitive reasons?

I would really like to do all my mastering to a P3 color space, even if I have to make a separate sub-master for rec709. Of course I'd MUCH rather author just once to P3 and then have the RedRay player apply a rec709 3D LUT on the fly if that's all the display can support. Are you saying the announced RedRay player can't even recognize and process P3? Is it rec 709 savvy only?

Just feel like a P3 master will have greater shelf life due to the better color rendition made possible on the more capable displays of the future. You can apply an inverse LUT to turn rec709 into P3 but since so much of the color information is simply not there it suffers from interpolation errors and non linear transforms.

Touché, but there's still x264 (or 265 for that matter).

Is the .RED codec going to be free and available for PC/Mac media players?

Nobody would buy the RED hardware if that was so, but I hoped they went that direction instead.

Maybe, DRM is the reason why not it isn't for computer playback, plus it eliminates tons of support issues...

So if you are using a display that only supports 1080p, how will 4K .... delivered on the Redray compare to Bluray?

Simply no contest... but again you'll have to take our word for it until you see that for yourself.

Don't read a .RED codec color gamut limitation into the REC709 spec. It's just reflecting the specificied gamma and gamut for Ultra HD displays ....

Ok so when is the next showing at RED STUDIO PERHAPS!!!! IM THERE!!

I can't see them putting .RED on PCs as a playback medium. 4K monitors (not TVs mind you) will take A LONG time to catch on and we need more high-resolution/low-bandwidth content encoding options for A/V multi-media. More to the point, putting DVD and Blu-Ray playback into computers opened the doors wide for piracy once the Internet community figured out how to crack the formats open and bypass the copy protection using the playback software.

HOLY F*** that is crazy!!!!! Looked AMAZING!!!

heh heh heh.. everyone that has seen anything shown at a RED event, at NAB, or at RED studios in the last 2 years, things like LOOM, TATTOO, our reels, etc.. has seen the .RED codec in it's prototype form playing back at a much lower rate... 1.5 MB/s.. so it holds up just fine :)

While I agree we won't see .RED playback directly on PC's, I have to disagree on the 4K monitor thing. By this time next year, most all decent large notebook PC's and many desktops will have 4K / QHD displays. I've already seen a few pre-release models headed to CES in about 6 weeks. 16~17" 3840x2160 notebooks are about to be all over the place. Desktop monitors are not too far behind, in fact I'm shocked the 21.5" iMac isn't sporting a 3840x2160 panel with the new release happening now.

Can someone tell me why everyone is ordering RedRay right now? I want one but what is the point until a 4k display is available?

Last NAB I was showing some footage to customers on a 1080p broadcast monitor. I asked them "what do you think this is"?

After some back and forward their conclusion was - "a DPX sequence of color corrected camera source footage"?

Answer " no that's actually REDray " .

Point is connecting REDRAY to a 1080p resolution plasma or high end HD projector is an an excellent application until 4K displays get to the market.

I think I'm missing something; does that mean RED expects everyone (consumer and theatres alike) to own proprietary hardware in order to playback RED-only 4k movies? That doesn't make sense. Even at $1450 it'd be a closed system of limited use (what about every other 4k movie or film scan). I doubt future 4k capable media players (playstation 4 included) will cost that much and be limited to manufacturer-only acquired movies.
