I'm curious, would it be possible to take pictures while shooting video?

I've heard the canon 5Dmk2 can do this so I was wondering about the red.

I know you could take stills from video in post but then you get motion blur and stuff. So pictures would be better I think.

Anyone?

Cheers,
Karel.

Not as such but ...

I don't believe the Canon, or any other camera can do this. Think about it - you'd need two sensors capturing at two different shutter speeds and, therefore, either two different ISO ratings or with lenses at different aperture settings.

Not that that seems to be stopping anyone from producing amazing images.

See these discussions: Paris Vogue & Vogue China.

Yeah I figured it would be unlikely.

I guess you'll just have to shoot at higher frame rates to reduce the blur for stills and speed up the video in post.

But still, I'd love to see a system that can shoot 5k video and produce 20+ megapixel stills for print at the same time :-).

Cheers!

Red One is being used to shoot motion for stills now for publication. To reduce motion blur you just up the shutter speed, not necessarily the frame rate. Unlike the DSLR's every motion frame is a full resolution raw frame, there is no difference in quality between them.

To clarify, while recording video on the 5d2, if you press the shutter release, a still is recorded at whatever res the camera is set for (Raw in my case). The downside is, it creates a gap in the video as it has to stop recording while shooting the still. Lame. I think the better solution is to export an R3D frame as a Tiff, though I expect the quality of the 5d2 still to be better... hmm... maybe I'll test that.
