  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

I think you'll be able to play any format as long as it's transcoded to the .RED format.

I think I'm missing something; does that mean RED expects everyone (consumer and theatres alike) to own proprietary hardware in order to playback RED-only 4k movies? That doesn't make sense. Even at $1450 it'd be a closed system of limited use (what about every other 4k movie or film scan). I doubt future 4k capable media players (playstation 4 included) will cost that much and be limited to manufacturer-only acquired movies.

People said the same thing about Blu-Ray... I doubt the players will still be $1450 as time goes on. It's taken 6 years for Blu-Ray to go from $995 at specialty dealers to $70 at WalMart. Let's see what RedRay does...

hahaha I didnt mean you, but in general someone out there in the porn industry will be making some big bucks through this platform and 4K technology. It is America after all ;)

Hehe... I don't shoot porn... Maybe I should start?

For studios, they will demand encrypted files... How does the encryption affect data rate?

It doesn't. REDCrypt media encryption is included in that 2.5MB/s data rate.

thats a multi billion dollar industry guys!! why not!! make that $$$$ then go buy more RED products!! LOL

That would be dumb... and it's not what we are doing.

now that is impressive.

to those doubting the picture. I have SEEN IT WITH MY OWN EYES the last 3 years... its stunning and you need to not compare lousy web compression codec's to sophisiticated wavelet compression...
N
redcode = REDRAY... since nobody has brought this up... How did you guys get the .RED name? wasnt that some existing file type hence R3D (the 3 being an E backwards) if my trivia mind serves me well :)

show and tell?

show and tell?

JARRED, when are you guys going to do another showing, and where?? I would like to come down and see this.

Thanks

Just ate some dinner and was able to digest this tremendous news for a minute. It's just extremely exciting.

Somethings that would be intersting to explore via ODEMAX would potentially be:

- tiered pricing structure for viewers. One price for one view, one price for buyout, one price for maybe a week worth if viewing and offering all of those options.
- I wonder if it would be possible to provide "channel subscriptions". Where somebody who produces weekly/monthly content could setup something where the viewer purchases a year of content. Similar to a network/station.
- which then opens up the concept of embedding advertisements within your project. Which is an interesting idea.
- I also wonder if it could be possible to "broadcast" live content in some way.

Lots of thoughts. Lots of potential.

email my assist lia @ red.com and she will get you set up... hollywood.

They can use whatever file extension they want. Besides, it makes it easy to keep other people from using it when you own the trademark.

i agree Im just recalling they once wanted that for R3D files but changed it for a reason that escapes me... probably was some Cioni - Reducation trivia or something...

USB 2.0?? .....Also 1TB .... can't you provide options with 2,3,4gb drives?

Because adding USB-2 external storage is cheap and it's more than fast enough for 2.5MB/s data.

We also can support qualified e-SATA and Ethernet based external storage devices if desired.

(1TB is approximately 100 hours of 4K .RED footage BTW)

One of the 'tricks' I've been using to land projects over the last year has been a RED Rocket Breakout Box, loaded into a rack mount, tied into a PC running 2x RED Rocket cards, and then HDMI cables connected to a 70" and an 80" monitor. The results are spectacular and it puts on quite a show in our little studio. We've been watching "1080 preview" of 4K and 5K footage for many months now.

I've got the exact same setup at the house with the in-home studio, living room, and master bedroom wired. The Breakout is in the in-home studio and all of the HDMI cables are wired into the walls.

So what the RED guys have been saying about 'just wait and see', is absolutely right. If the quality of the RED Ray "1080 preview" playback is at least what I've already been getting (and using effectively), then it's true -- it's better than Blu-Ray and at $1450, it's a hell of a bargain.

What kind of Hellish Nirvana is this? No more excuses. All we need is content. That is all. ( :

Google Fiber needs to expand to the masses. Where we're headed, we're going to need pipes.

Actually no, unlike existing HD video streaming services, the REDRAY player is network download speed agnostic.

If you do have a fast download that's nice, but REDRAY works anywhere there is an internet service - of any speed.

Will we need to have a REDRAY player to start a channel and start uploading content or are we able to author content and manage a channel without yet owning the player?
