  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

Jarred,

I was wondering if you could tell us the compression speed of the .red format vs. h.264 on the same computer?

I think I saw you are using the GPU for compressing, does it need Cuda or OpenCL?

Will my Red Rocket be of any use to speed up compression?

Do you guys ever sleep?

Thanks for giving me a reason to let my Bolex, dvx, hvx, 7d collect dust on the shelf and to finally feel like there is an alternative to silver based recording.

From RED footage in RCX a rocket will help dump into .R3D.

The speed right now to compress to .RED files (via software) is pretty slow.. it is doing a shitload of calculations and Graeme's little pixies are working overtime to get the incredible image that it spits out.. we went quality over speed.

We are not sure where it will end up yet.. now that we have the image quality locked down they have just started on optimization and then being assisted by hardware.

I know I'm a bit of a broken record, but I really want to know about the interactive/menu layer. Any info?

There is..but ODEMAX wants to demo that in person at the Sundance House at Sundance. You need to let your mind run free on this one.. if you look at the spec sheet and see that there is both a PROGRAM and a MONITOR output.. that should give you a bit of a clue just how far you can go with it...

Jarred you must have missed my question about AUDIO formats for the RED RAY.

What does it support? DTS-hd true-HD?

Any shots of the On screen UI?

From what was posted, LPCM is what the player outputs and there is a 7.1 capable RED audio codec to go along with the video but it also supports stereo MPEG4 audio.

Jarred for studio and in house projection and internal screenings how open is it going to be to customize the process of .RED ?
Im guessing this is still going to be a closed door to the file format ?

Will we get to see or hear more next week for the festival ?

I have the same question. That is a tough problem. GPS that tells it's location ? Wild idea.

I'm wrapping hy head around the massive positive impact for small theaters - however - something is nagging at me ...

I put my film up - let's say I have the choice to establish VOD/download price at $10.00 ($7 for me $3 for ODEMAX) ...

How am I protected from a small theatre - (think art house) - from just buying a player and downloading for $10 - and then charging for tickets for 300 people to watch in their theatre - and no paying me anything. I just get $7 and they sold 300 tickets.

Given the cut to cinemas is only 30%, it isn't that great of a deal for small theaters like mine. We average slightly over 50% with the big studios when all is said and done. I'll likely grab one anyway just so that I can support some of the great Redusers here by running their flicks in a real cinema.

Game changer. Some questions about international markets- What are Odemax plans for Asia- Hong-Kong/Macau specifically? Will we be able to create our own channels and show/sell our content internationally? Where can we expect Odemax to be available, say, by Sundance or NAB time?

I can see this being revolutionary on multiple panel display installations over here... Fantastic! Will talk to a few people... :)

30% of the house (ticket sales) - or 30% of one download?

Every theater should have RED theater seats fitted with pressure sensitive pads hooked up to the ODEMAX network.

So with the two Ethernet ports, does this mean I can run dual network connection to my switch/router for greater bandwidth? Or are there two ports for another application?

Hmmm, I suppose I assumed (because John talked about linking into industry standard ticketing software) that Odemax at the theatrical level would split revenue on a per-ticket basis. I could be wrong on that. Maybe it is a flat (though MUCH larger) fee? I suppose I shouldn't jump to conclusions on this with details still sparse.

John or Jarred, can you clarify that point on how the theatrical break down works? Per ticket or flat rate?

That's not the reason, as with a codec operating at 2.5MB/s your network connection isn't working very hard :-)

Two Ethernet ports means one can go to the internet or an automation controller, the other is available to connect to an Ethernet based SAN

Perhaps there will be a variant of the player and the download that just interfaces with the larger Crimson projector. Some sort of hand-shake between the download, the player and the Crimson ... and the download won't play unless and until there is a corresponding hand-shake between the tracking software installed at the art house.

If I'm not mistaken, this also presents an opportunity for like minded filmmakers to pool resources in order to widen their marketing/visibility. Quasi studios. Five individuals might get lost in the fray, but five side by side might just cut a swath through it. ????

So if you are using a display that only supports 1080p, how will 4K and other content delivered on the Redray compare to Bluray?
