  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

Wait, I do have one thing to review. It's a non-technical review of REDLaser, and since they weren't able to show REDLaser it's obviously a review by inference.
----

After they showed the animated movies, they showed a clip of Avatar -- the scene where Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana (it's totally okay to do that) are running around at night.

You remember this scene. It's the gorgeous one with the phosphorescent plants and animals with their own illumination. There's also a dizzying view from above as JS almost falls off the tree.

As I was watched, my thoughts gradually shifted from technical appreciation to emotional engagement...

-- "Man I can't believe they could be streaming this over the internet"
-- "Crap I forgot how gorgeous this is."
-- "Wow, I really want to see Avatar in theaters again."

And then after all of that annoying inner monologue I started to just drop it and enjoy Pandora. I was ready to sit back and watch the rest of the two plus hours. I was ready for the destruction of the tree, ready to roll my eyes when they said unobtanium, ready to cry (manly tears) when NotRipley doesn't make it. I was so ready for the adventure and then --

THEY SHUT IT OFF.

The guy (whose name I've forgotten) was frustrated. He MAY have been disgusted. He was definitely frustrated.

"Stop stop stop... it's... it's not supposed to look like that." Frustrated RED Guy says, "It looks better than that. Stop. Turn it off." He mentioned something about the colors popping more (they were popping just fine I thought. clearly, I'm a plebeian).

I guess the moral of the story is this:

I haven't seen REDLaser, but I bet it's badass.

Thanks for this, Phil. This is one of my go-to scenes for contrast. If the Red rep was "disgusted" by this scene on the Sony, it speaks volumes about how it must look on the Red. :emote_popcorn: That's exactly the kind of impression I was looking for. Thanks for posting.

I was there, let me fill in the blanks!! The guy from RED was Hugo, he was our original host. And the reason he wanted to stop the AVATAR clip was it was projecting very "flat" images almost kinda washed or what it would look like without color grading. It wasn't streaming it the way it was supposed to ( just for that clip). Hence the reason for stopping the clip. Then, Ted joined us after LOOM and yes, although the SONY 4K projector was loud, and very big it is not as good as the RED LASER PROJECTOR.

I wish I could have seen the clip of AVATAR as well but I guess I will just have to wait for my own REDRAY & PROJECTOR!! It was fun, and Ted is an great host!!

anytime!!!! Joseph!!

Well I've had access to a Crimson for some time... :-)

Here finally an article in “Film and Digital Times” about REDRAY 4K; http://www.fdtimes.com/2012/12/08/redray-4k/

It reads in Part; “It’s December 8, 2012. Do you know where your content is? Not where they predicted. Neighborhood DVD stores are gone. Blockbuster who? Netflix by mail does not gratify instantly, and stuttery streaming incites screaming. Any movie, anytime, anywhere is still a startup light at the end of a tunnel.

Where have all the DVDs (and Blu-rays) gone? Pogue and pundits recently bemoaned the lack of DVD drives in the latest iMacs, MacBooks and all-in-one screens on stalks.

And what about 4K? Plummeting prices of big flat screen 1080p HDTVs predict a panoply of 4K TVs promised in January at CES. But how are we going to watch 4K at home? For that matter, how will corporations, medical services, stores, schools, venues, and independent theaters get 4K?

RED Digital Cinema is planning to deliver their REDRAY 4K cinema player next month. It will play 4K content on Ultra HD televisions and 4K Cinema monitors or projectors.”

I'll get my coat...

Nice seeing you here.

Good to get rid of false rumors.

As to the projector specs, none know them outside RED, yet - except that the consumer will get a fixed lens and the pro an interchangeable lens.

The best I think would be a lens mount base that is the same as for the cameras. So we can use all our lenses and mounts on the projector side aswell.
Would be cool to shoot anamorphic and project through anamorphic glass on the projector. Or use low cost good quality canon glass or such. Putting on a leica noctilux would probably be pretty cool aswell.
So I hope for the home theater one to come with a removable al canon mount or such.

That was our original concept remember.. but as much as a lens is a lens is a lens, unfortunately polarized laser light going through the lens the opposite way through camera lenses ( specially coated ones ) provided to not work so well.

Guys, you don't have to lecture me on 4K finishing being a good idea.

At the same time... seriously, there is a reason that Prometheus, Dragon Tattoo, The Avengers, etc did not master at it.

There is a reason that lots of big movies are still not mastering at it now.

And it's not because those guys are stupid.

It's because budgets are finite. And perhaps budgets are better spent on doing another artistic pass on a shot at lower resolution vs waiting for it to render.

You'll make more money now with a creatively-excellent 2K release than a 4K release that needed another layer of polish. And then you can re-do at 4K down the line when there is a larger paying audience who demands your creatively-excellent work at higher resolution.

This is very true, the studios are selling a product to the masses, most of whom don't know 2K or 4K from a nat's behind. 4K is special and it will take a bit of time for the public to wake up. My wife only recently coincided she could see the difference between DVD and Bluray.

Understood, but it would at least be a cool option, or no? I saw early pictures of the projector and it looked like it had the Ti pl mount. I think it would be a great option for people working on IMAX or other dome projections if they could apply a fish eye or such to project their stuff correctly even tough it might break up a bit due to the coatings etc. I can understand that it would probably not be optimal to use just any lens but you guys have given us the infinite options before and here you could make just the same with the projector.

I guess you guys have done all those tests already. So is it really bad with camera lenses or just a notch difference?

I guess a lens with radial focus would not do so well on a flat screen... But how cool would it not be to have a radial screen, or dome.. 15 years ago I was over at universal studios post department and there was a guy there who had a dome projection output from his flame... thats the most bad ass monitoring option I seen and I guess these projectors could make it possible even for a bit smaller studios :)

Hence the differences between enlarger lenses and taking lenses, not to mention "flat field" process lenses. Many taking lenses are not that well suited for copying from flat surfaces, let alone projecting images onto them. From the practitioner's POV, it's always worth experimenting though. I used an old process lens as an 8X10 enlarger lens. Even with the diffused light source of a "cold light" it was excellent.

Hope both projectors have a 'short throw' option.

HD was set up with standard 30 deg field of view. Imax is set for 100-110 degrees.
You don't buy a big honkin bad ass projector to watch a little box image across the room.

My only projector at the moment is a TDC Stereovivid 116 3D slide projector with .4 'short throw' lenses.
Simple fact is...shorter throw brighter image.

Occasionaly photographers would use taking lenses as projection/enlarger lenses by mounting the lens so that the projector's light entered through the front element and exited through the rear one. Makes sense. Might be a bit archaic these days, but who knows. Might be worth a shot.
