  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

Understood, but you could take your REDRAY player to them, and show that what your 4K image quality capabilities are (even to a 1080p display)

Then maybe they would buy one or two REDRAY players too...

I sure will. One good thing is we kill the possibility of poor players that mess up the picture.

The early rumbling around The Hobbit's frame rate and the prominent use of Gandalf in the marketing materials for RedRay seems to suggest that Red is about to drop a number of these things with Crimson into some key theaters. :ihih:

If so, this shit's going to explode in a hurry! Get out your thermonuclear protection guys!

Yeah, they mentioned earlier in this thread that Crimson will go into theaters first before the home version of the projector starts shipping.

Can interactivity be imbedded into the movies? hyperlinks, HTML5 etc?

Please tell me that this service will be ad free???? Youtube, since it started forcing ad playback is a real pain and the same thing with ios and Xbox!

I'm assuming the ODEMAX can distribute key files to unlock encryption separately from encoded film content. So, like KDMs - one only needs a tiny file to unlock for additional screenings, etc. - the venue does not have to download the encoded .RED file again. If this is the case - there's already a HUGE advantage for distributors with respect to distribution expenses - as there are a few companies currently milking the KDM file creation & distribution business - and trying hard to keep it as a "dark, secret art" - even though it takes less than 30 seconds to create a KDM if you have the server certificate or serial number. Automating that, and giving the control directly to distribution companies ... and even content creators ... is significant.

ODEMAX, as a content distribution platform, just rolled all the advantages of DCPs and traditional download VOD platforms into one. EVEN if you only screened HD or 2K out of the 4K .RED files prior to broader access to 4K panels and projectors - there appears to be some significant advantages over any other content delivery platform I can think of.

I'm crazy excited about ODEMAX. Most likely ... it will have a greater impact on RED's future than the Dragon sensor. It's not exactly going to hurt SONY either :)

It's the perfect time to disrupt the content delivery platform models - and the content distribution business in general.

We are rapidly heading to a new age of content distribution. It's all about the platforms. Since all distribution companies have access to the same platforms (iTunes, Netflix, Amazon, Xbox360, ODEMAX), etc. - basically ... the significance of an actual "distribution company" is going to be about a) MARKETING and RELEASE STRATEGY and b) investing/financing and/or co-financing films

For decades - indie filmmakers have been robbed blind by a sea of middle-men and the industry accepted corrupt accounting practices which are - plain and simple - WHITE COLLAR CRIME that nobody is motived to stop. The producer is the last to get paid, if ever, with respect to profits.

Things are going to get very interesting :)

... am I correct in assuming the .RED plugin will only encode to 4k? So if the content is in R3D 6k, it downscales to 4k?

Correct, the .RED file frame size is the same as a DCI container - 4096 x 2160 - so .R3D files are cropped and / or scaled to fit into that.

Sounds very promising. Now I have a good excuse to go to Sundance, which is just drive up the canyon from my house. :)

.. You left out cinematic image quality.
Quality (image quality) sells across many markets - advertising, fashion, travel, medical, sports and of course commercial and home theatres.

Crappy highly compressed picures don't.

I think there's a rather huge gulf between "crappy highly compressed pictures" and 4K "cinematic image quality." And that's where about 90% of what is available falls. The choice for the consumer isn't between gold and garbage. It's a choice between many different levels of quality, based on preference and budget. A"You're either for us or you're against us" approach doesn't really hold water here.

How will RedRay & ODEMAX play with 2k Projectors? A lot of small theatres went for the 2k projector as the 4k was cost prohibited.

Are you still able to send a theatre or anyone with a RedRay player a USB stick with your film on should you wish to save 20% by not going the ODEMAX route?

Will RedRay upres a 2k film to output in 4k? I assume as it does so for HD it will do the same for 2k?

Is the encryption available on the RedRay or is it only via ODEMAX?

. iDevices will never replace watching a movie on a TV.

Film will "never" go away. Cars will "never" be able to drive themselves. Laptops will "never" be able to do what desktops can. IPhones will "never" take the place of Blackberries.

Never, ever say "never", especially where technology is concerned and especially when what you're saying will "never" happen already has, for many, many people, especially those under 25.

I'm not sure I want to own stock in a big movie exhibition chain right now. Good thing this was announced on a Friday after the stock market closed. On the other hand, there may be new small-theater-size corporations gearing up right now.

Absolutely bang on Mr Most. I was just about to post:

As far as "quality" is concerned, and how people determine what it is made up of on an individual basis, no one howled at Blair Witch, or when Thomas Vinterberg and Lars Von Trier rolled out "Dogme" cinema and gained an indelible place in history. And no one slung abuse at Benjamin Buttons or Slumdog Millionaire. And a few hundred million popcorn munchers have had their bloodlust sated by … well, you all know what.

How hard is it going to be to make this plug-in work in Premiere Pro? Just edit your R3D footage in PP and encode directly from the App seems like it should be pretty easy to me.

Do you really think watching a movie on an iPad/iPhone will replace watching one on a TV/Projector? I don't.

From my own personal experience, I had a 40" TV but then bought a 48" one. All of a sudden, there were things in TV shows I'm able to see now that I never noticed before. Just sayin'.

I think he is saying that: it is a matter of personal taste, for some people it already has replaced the TV/Projector and that tastes change constantly and sometimes rapidly.

The question was - what is the advantage of REDRAY? : nobody is questioning that content sells for a variety of reasons - including of course a great story.

The key advantages REDRAY has over other delivery methods absolutely inclides pristine image quality. It's not an "us v's them" attitude or statement.

It doesn't really matter what I think or what you think. That decision will be made by the wider audience and the next generation. And they're already speaking, if one is listening and paying attention.

On the other hand, they will not remain kids forever. Once their little brains mature they will learn to appreciate the full screen experience. They will grow out of the small screen life.
