  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE-X Build 351... finally.

Raphael, it's pretty easy to do. I've been doing tests the past couple days and it's working great. Here is the workflow we've been doing that works perfectly:

1. Duplicate your final sequence in FCP and label new one "Prepped." Prep this one by collapsing all video tracks down to 1 layer. Remove all FX, dissolves, titles, etc.
2. Export XML. Standard settings.
3. Go to RC-X and choose "Import FCP XML." It will open the "Preferences" window. Choose the folder where your original R3D files are at the top by selecting "Change." Next, choose your frame rate, change "Destination" to "Timeline" and click "OK." It will bring up your finder window where you then select the FCP XML you saved.
4. All clips will now be in timeline. Go through and color correct all clips.
5. Under "Export," choose "Timeline (separate clips)" and I assume you have a Preset for HD or ProRez. (We do 23.98, ProRez most often). When it asks, save the clips to a folder called "XYZ_ColorCorrected" or something of that nature. It will then export all of the clips individually into that folder.
6. Now, just go back into FCP, choose the clips and "reconnect" the media to the new clips that you just exported. Due to the 1 frame error now, it will give you an error message to click through. Just say fine to that and all of your FCP clips now see the newly color corrected clips.

*The one deal, that I was surprised at, is that ALL of your previous sequences will also be now connected to your color corrected clips, even if you reconnected only the timeline clips. Odd and unexpected. So, the only way around this is before you export the XML, just rename the project and then export an XML. That way, your old project would keep the uncorrected clips as-is.

Hope that helps. I've been emailing Deanan about getting a little better way of using handles as right now, I have not gotten those to work. If you have crossfades now, you'd have to manually add the frames before you export the XML doc and then manually put the clips back in to account for the crossfade frames.

Good luck. It's been working flawlessly with us so far.

Hi Kevin and all,

If you're using Clipfinder and you can send an xml back to FCP to relink to the new media, this way you're not relinking all your other projects to the new media.

With Clipfinder you can also set handles, this allows you to bypass the limitations of FCP and RCX regarding this aspect. You set the handle length when you import the FCP XML into Clipfinder.

Cheers,
Damien

That's not the only way round it.

Before you reconnect, choose "make sequence clips independent" from the contextual menu on that sequence.

This thread is nothing without the sweet-sweet befores & afters... Those are where the new-hotness really shines. I wanna see more frames-that-are-so-good-they-could-be-stills-from-a-DSLR screen grabs, and I'm sure most other would too.

Thanks Gunleik, Kevin, Luca and Nick. I stopped using Redcine about 6 months ago in favor of the color workflow. Looks like the RCX workflow is back at the top. I'm still having trouble understanding entirely though. Earlier Gunleik you said render out DPX or AJAlog. Are you down converting to 1080? Can I log and Transfer in FCP and it's the same thing using Prores?

Sorry for the questions but it get to be a lot to read through to find what you are looking for.

1080 sounds anout right...

You could use prores 4444 and save a lot of space.
It's not like DPX (me thinks), but it is still very good and would handle the same workflow very well...

try to install the redrocket update - no luck
dose not open the terminal?
if i try to start the installer manualy in the terminal
tells me only permission denied

help please
all rights checket via the diskutility

had the same problem, here´s what did the trick:
- in the terminal login as superuser by entering "su" and the password
(be REALLY careful about what you´re doing!)
- enter "chmod u+x " and drag the first script from your finder window into the terminal, press enter
- do the same procedure for the second script
- run the firmware installer

hope this helps

Build 351 Missing Button Titles & Rocket

Build 351 Missing Button Titles & Rocket

Hi Guys

Just put Build 351 32 Bit on two of our systems (both 8 cores) and also installed Redline from the same 351b download, as well as the latest Rocket driver and firmware update on the system with the previously happy Rocket in it.

REDCine-X seems to be working okay on both systems, but neither of them are showing any text on many of the program buttons - most of the clip settings are fine, but preferences, for example, just shows the check marks and no text, the same with half the buttons in look presets and so on. Any ideas? I have installed everything a couple of times but it makes no difference.

Rocket all installed fine, but sometimes it decides to show up on the viewer, other times it isn't there at all...

Finally I found time to test the new-new colour science.

RedColor2 is a nice interpretation of the sensor's data, at least colour-wise. Obviously more desaturated as RedColor1 which is good for grading.

I find that RedColor1 with RedGamma1 brings the best offline-dailies when you cut off R3Ds and use the camera settings. The dailies are saturated, with enough "punch" to give an inexperienced eye a clue what the final look could be like - and if not, the result is pleasing enough for editing and client eyes when it comes to an offline approval.

But this is not new news.

The new news for me is that RedFilm is a very, very pleasing foundation for grading. I'm still on M-sensor (I'm slightly tight-fisted in the moment...I know MX is much better... I know, I know... but Epic is soon to be released... Stage 3...) and I must say that I alway have chosen RedLog for grading with good results but RedFilm delivers even more detail at 320 ASA which is huge.

Below are two shots I took when I directed a commercial a fortnight ago. The first is RedColor2 and RedFilm at 320 ASA with no curves applied. The second pictures is a graded version I did on my Smoke using ColourWarper. The result might be a bit harsh but this has been the look we went for. Please note how much detail is in the "naked" RedFilm negative.

Warm Regards to the Red team for this achievement,

Hans

EDIT: Just found out how bad the pictures look like. I'm not sure how to off-load better copies.

Now hopefully in better quality. The naked picture is shot on M-sensor and Zeiss Masterprime 25mm at 320 ASA, Redcolor2 and RedFilm, the graded shot has been colour timed in Smoke.

I am using a Mobile Rocket for transcoding with RCX 351 to Avid DNxHD36 1080 x 1920 23.98 fps. Every ten to twenty clips RCX crashes, quitting unexpected. Any idea what could be causing this? Has anyone had success doing large batches for Avid on build 351?

RCX351/RC2/RG2 + QT Wrapper?

RCX351/RC2/RG2 + QT Wrapper?

Hi, great new build! I am using smoothcam in FCP on some 4K wrappers in a HD timeline. It would be really great if RCX351/RC2/RG2 could work properly when generating new wrappers. Best wishes, Calle

Not yet. We're getting that updated as soon as we can.

One great gift for christmas would be for red.com to reflect the latest software versions...It's very heartbreaking to see ones work getting the conversion done in Redcine-X 262 because some on-line technician believes it's the latest one :-(
Jim & co :-), is there any chance it would be possible to get the support site to reflect the latest installments?
And if possible, make an archive section for deprecated versions.....we are still seeing folks trying to run a lot of stuff thru redrushes and red alert :-(

It's just so terrible to see quality go out the window for no reason at all....:-)

Second that! Another idea would be to build in an update notice in the application if the user has an active internet connection.

Jeff has a list of the newest software including Beta versions:

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=46523

He sure does, and I admire him for doing so...

Problem is that "common" people go to www.red.com to download software, not http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=46523

Neard's like you and me don't have a problem, because we follow the threads in "recon"

I just think it's unfortunate that the great leaps in development of the color science get's lost because common people wont obtain the correct software.

The most used way to get redcine-x will probably be to google....and that also leads straight to red.com
