Started it up (the Cuda-only/OpenCL disabled version) on my 5,1 MP 64 GB's RAM, 500 MB/s internal Raid, GTX 680, 10.8.3 OSX
Installed the latest Cuda driver as RC-X wasn't seeing the card, after which it did
RedRaw 4k 5:1 compression, 2:1 aspect to 1080 ProRes 1080 LT, half-res debayer
Transcoded a 2:30 clip in 10 minutes (4:1 ratio), or about 6 fps
Meanwhile Resolve now goes faster than it did thanks to the Cuda driver update (apparently), getting 16 fps transcode
Installed Build 23. It was launching a bit ago but showing CUDA error. Now when I launch it, the interface comes up momentarily then crashes. The Player does start, seems to work on GPU a bit as GPU-Z shows activity, but will not play back 5K full res real time as production builds will.
This is on Win 8.1 Pro. dual E5-2690v2 Xeon and Quadro K6000's.
Did you load latest drivers?
Now what it will really comes down to in order to tale full advantage of this great direction is finalizing our new editing station...
New "Stock" 6/8 core Mac Pro with external RRX or Old Custom Mac Pro tower with internal RRX?
Maik, you are a very brave man for saying these things. I think the worms in the Apple core are about to come out and eat you. '-)A few thoughts...
- Internal ROCKET-X is safer, probably faster. External ROCKET-X is more versatile, you can hook it up to a Notebook.
- The new MacPro has only AMD-GPUs, so if CUDA gets better than OpenCL you are out of luck
- The new MacPro is less flexible and in some ways more risky. If one component fails, the whole machine is off. No easy replacement of SSDs, GPU with off-the-shelf-components. This can be huge. No easy upgrade too.
- For the price of a better configured MacPro you can build a better Windows-Workstation which will be more versatile and can easily upgraded. But no Thunderbolt on Workstation-Pattforms so far...
The new MacPro is a nice machine, but it sacrifices a lot to gain a little. In my opinion Apple wins a lot more than the user by that design-approach. Users get forced into the "whole-machine-replacement"-product-circle, like it is with every other Apple-product...
Ketch! Wouldn't be nice a NEW MAC PRO with 2 Red Rockets inside? LOL... Just thinking of the future...Portability is priceless
