  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE-X Beta CUDA Build 23.0.0 and Release Build 22.2.0

Please Please Please change the panning and zooming to be resolution independent when you change debayer resolutions. Or make it an option so that when you change from 2k 100% to 4k it automagically switches to 50% zoom to maintain your framing. I'll zoom in on a section then want to up-rez and it'll then zoom me in further. Or I'll be working in 4k and then switch back to 2k and it'll pop me back out not filling the screen. Nuke does a fantastic job of this, if I switch from proxy mode to 4k mode it maintains my relative zoom and panning in the viewer.

Things I've noticed. I can do 1/8, 6K @23.98fps without ever catching up to my buffer on CUDA(Beta 23). Using OpenCL with the same file, I can pull 1/4, 6K @23.98fps while keeping the buffer far far ahead. OpenCL allows me to even do 1/2, 6K @18-22fps but I catch up to the buffer and it stops for 2-4 and goes. Now my equipment is not state of the art or anything, I7 2600K, 16GB Ram, GTX670, pulling content from a WD Raptor drive.

If you plan on testing Beta 23 RCx, remember to re-enable OpenCL in your preferences on RCx 22.2. It gets disabled every-time you use Beta 23.
 
Was there also an update to the RRX Drivers? 2.0.10 wasn't recognized after I installed the new (both) version of RCX.

I'm back to the earlier RCX v.22 for now.
 
Interesting to hear those side-by-side-comparisons. I'm curious how this plays out with upcoming updates. I'm currently planning a new workstation and RED-decoding-performance will have a big influence on the decision between NVIDIA and ATI. ;)

This is really great. When will Premiere and Resolve be able leverage this functionality? The game has changed. It's gonna be like manipulating DV footage circa 2005.

What CPU do you have? Are you playing off a RAID or SSD?

Yes, this will be added to the SDK so it will eventually work with other programs.
 
My CPU is an i7 4930k.

As for the SDK, the question is when. We've been anticipating this since the beta. Now that the performance has quadrupled its gonna be hard to continue waiting. lol

We are aware of this issue and looking in to it. More soon.
 
Is there going to be a way to eek out more GPU usage? I can't quite hit 24fps on a 5k clip @ 2k debayer with a Titan even though I have a 3930k processor (processor bottleneck).

You need more CPU power

Yes on zoom, I want to change that as well
 
A few thoughts...

- Internal ROCKET-X is safer, probably faster. External ROCKET-X is more versatile, you can hook it up to a Notebook.
- The new MacPro has only AMD-GPUs, so if CUDA gets better than OpenCL you are out of luck
- The new MacPro is less flexible and in some ways more risky. If one component fails, the whole machine is off. No easy replacement of SSDs, GPU with off-the-shelf-components. This can be huge. No easy upgrade too.
- For the price of a better configured MacPro you can build a better Windows-Workstation which will be more versatile and can easily upgraded. But no Thunderbolt on Workstation-Pattforms so far...

The new MacPro is a nice machine, but it sacrifices a lot to gain a little. In my opinion Apple wins a lot more than the user by that design-approach. Users get forced into the "whole-machine-replacement"-product-circle, like it is with every other Apple-product...

No new Mac pro beats a top-end config of the old Mac Pro with a single very good Cuda card, let alone a Cubix, and let alone that in teh future, old Mac Pros will have new GPU cards available, so its performance is not fixed forever like the New Mac Pros. So… Head over to ebay and buy a 12 core non-new Mac Pro, unless trash-can shaped computers are more important to you than performance.

Observations from my OSx hackintosh. I get the same results as my previous post 1/8, 6K @23.97fps. At 1/4, the buffer gets caught by the counter. Same specs, just different OS.

Note: I haven't found a way to install both copies of RCx/Beta on my OSx.

The browser listing is faster on CUDA across both platforms(Win/Mac).

4k full quality, realtime, no buffering needed
5k full quality, realtime, maybe 20 seconds to buffer then plays for maybe a minute before stalling

Intel HD graphics are integrated, hence they do not have their own processing cores to the extent of a discreet graphics card, they use the system resources. So it should have OpenCL support, but you won't gain much if any additional processing power from using it.
