A few of us have been a little "upset" that Magnesium Weapon is a bit slow coming out the Red industrial complex..... but has anyone seen or heard of the Alexa SXT in the wild yet? They said at NAB we would see it in July 2015.... I have not seen or heard of any rental house in the U.K that has taken delivery of one. And I am amazed that Arri has not come out to apologise about late delivery dates..... if Red did that everyone would be up in arms.

It is amazing that Red now has more precise delivery dates than Arri who have about 100 years experience.

Has anyone seen an SXT yet?

Red... well done. Your dates were pretty accurate with regards to Weapon delivery. Wish I could speed up those Magnesium weapon dates.... anyway the patient dog......

Right now it's the end of the year for SXT as far as I know

Arri: ALEXA SXT cameras keep the acclaimed 3.4K ALEV III sensor ..... ProRes 4K UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels) and ProRes 4K Cine (4096 x 2637 pixels)

Now that's magic;) If Arri can get away with this up-scalling stuff, then we all have 7k with our DRAGONS right now;-)

yes, it was delayed by arri (they are swamped with mini orders)... wish they would sell the 65 and not just the body. I'm not so sure what to do i want both but not sure if i can swing it... also not sure how long red will grace me with the upgrade option either, nor how long my spot will take in line given the roll out logistics and my last minute timestamp... tough choices? not sure whats the hotter rental item either, in the short run I'm gona try a mini though but long run def doing weapon/sxt but conflicted since arri will have a new sensor i bet in few years at most and weapon is a bit of a stretch price point wise (upgrade wise i mean vs new unit) despite its much better features i do worry about if 8k vista will be a huge hit or not for me given the sensor size and fickle nature of the rental market

I am just amazed really that the silence from Arri has been deafening about such a huge miss to a release date. And it is Feb/March 2015 now for SXT..... they better not announce a new sensor at NAB or else I will be really pissed.

they refer to sxt having upgrade potential in faq, but release schedule seems odd

But to sell the camera and them charge another 20K (possibly) for a new sensor will be a piss take. We bought it in September and accepted the XT as a stop gap solution. If they announce a new camera in April 2016 and want to charge more money for a sensor upgrade that will be exploitative.

yes, but in general digital sucks cuz both red and arri (and all the other guys too) are releasing stuff at faster rates than historically...the price points aint that cheap either for guys looking at weapon/SXT yea maybe its not a quarter million but still up there. one could argue releasing weapon so soon after people got dragon is exploitive, but each company has to pay for R&D somehow.. i thought red weapon announcement came too early in the cycle of dragon.... arri probably will only let SXT upgrade the sensor, not mini or amira if any can get a new sensor at all... both brands seem to work a lot though for me, so I'm happy in both camps but do worry about how much longevity arri will give me on this generations sensor as well... plus i worry about how to monetize for the additional weapon feature sets cuz yes they rock but telling production to help up the rates for 50k for functions that can be added to dragon easily via rocket x, on board recorders, more time for black shades, third party LUT solutions, seems tough sell for me when all that functionality can be done with a rats nest of third party stuff already essentially is the issue... 8k seems worth it, thats what I'm interested in

Yes, but every time Kodak, Agfa, or Fuji created a new stock we all got a free "upgrade". And there were YEARS of crossover, when a producer would request a 535 but not have the budget, and accept a 35BL4s no problem. Or want an Arricam, but settle for a 535B, especially since not much functionality changed over time. Yes, they got quieter, viewfinders got better, and electronic shutter control was added, along with some practical enhancements like built-in crystal speed control. But for a big chunk of day-to-day narrative and commercial work, you could chug right along with a camera that was new when you were in junior high! And if you were a DP or production company who owned a film camera, it was basically good forever. Often you would upgrade to e better video tap, or take advantage of a P+S Technik modification, and keep going.
Now, the MOMENT an improvement comes out and a new digital camera or variant is available, it changes the quality of the image captured, and the previous model(s) become undesirable and often not upgradeable. It's definitely a different game.
Cheers,
Harry

I remember how much of a big deal it was when I sent a pair of Eclair NPRs in for a super 16 upgrade. I thought that was the shit!

i suppose one could argue a red one or alexa classic can still make good images in 2025 as well (or certainly 2016)... but we all still clamor for the in camera uprez nonsense and LUTs/auto blackshades n prores... its crazy how relative weapon and SXT are compared to what we have already too? like why does the current market always want the newest stuff i have to wonder when mx or dragon or alexa classic or plus are already so close in quality?

Maybe things will slow down quality is no longer a big issue

I'd love to see higher frame rates or larger sensors in the hands of the masses vs the arri 65 business model regarding where else there isn't much innovation. I'm not sure why high frame rates wasn't done in weapon either vs prores cuz I'd love the choice on where to use the throughput vs making dailies in some cases

SXT, where are you? (Seriously I need another Arri, esp if it's got a new sensor)? Any idea guys?

Just realised that the Magnesium Weapon doesn't have 4k PRORES .. THAT SUCKS !!!
So for my Heli rigs, Shot over, car rigs, Russian arm, edge arm, Scorpio and libra heads everything that weight is not an issue... I cant get 4k PRORES without spending another 20k !...
Very upset about this.

Well with MG you can just shoot and transcode from raw to 4K, just not as easy on set as CF... It's not too late to switch lines to CF, but the costs are kind of high I agree. 8k makes it seem a bit better for me vs 6k cf when it comes to justifying costs
