  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON VERSUS ALEXA SXT DELIVERY DATES

Mark think about it.
Why on earth would you want 4k quicktime out of camera. Much better to push the bandwidh over towards the r3d´s side and then record small little prores files for offline editing. Then when done relink to the r3d´s.

The one cost difference is not so much (I think) Carbon 4k process, Mg no 4k process. But the fact that Carbon upgrade to 8k where as Mg does not.

So look at the extra cost as a way to get to 8k 4k prores 422 (if you really need it) and carbon. And in the upgrade you got a new mount. I think you get atlast 1000USD if you sell your old one used. Then a new AC power supply (don't know why) and a base i/o module and XL module... I like all those but if you sell them all add the 5000 USD discount on new stuff that is included, then the upgrade is not 20k.

Your the first person to make sense..

I do need PRORES from time to time..
Probably more after the 120FPS function than anything else... Say if I shot 150 frames in 4k... but the PRORES proxie wont match up, so your up to transcoding again.

But yes... what you siad makes sence.

At the end of the day, I'll probably swap all my dragons out for Carbon Weapons.. I'm just still in love with my current cameras that I feel I don't need to go to Weapon as yet. The pictures out of EPIC Dragons are still amazing and more than I need..

Im not seeing massive benefits to move as yet...

And again, Not saying the weapon is not awesome... it is.. But so is the EPIC DRAGON. :)

Cheers Björn

$20k more for 4k prores. This does not compute.

I think the idea is 20k for:
4k prores
Better compression r3d files (this can be a deal breaker on some shots)
Platform that will suport 8k chip
Longer guarantee
Better LUT functionality (probably the weaker extra)
Slightly lighter body
Extra and better PL mount

$20k more for 4k prores. This does not compute.

Mark,

The way I have analyzed this since announcement is simple and categorized by not what the camera can't or can do vs the other, but what it was meant for...

Magnesium is for a market that has no use to move forward to the 8K sensor, and this is why it has been built without the horse power to get there, this in turn has also made it's computing power slower, not as powerful and there for not capable to achieve what the CF & Forged can...

Mainly the MG is for those that can't afford to spend the extra 20k and don't really need the extra horse power, and are more then happy with lower quality Prores... Or simply don't need to spend the extra 20k for more horsepower because they just don't need more then 6k + 2k Prores.

Or is for those that can't afford the extra 20k now, and don't mind paying even extra later down the line to move to the 8K, which btw, it is POSSIBLE as Jarred also confirmed upon me asking, so the choice is there for MG Weapon top go 8K, but it will cost extra, meaning more then the 20K, do to extra labor work and parts replacement in more ways then just via CF & Forged.

So,

What you need to do is your math, do you want 8K? Then go CF or Forged for priority over CF... Don't need 8K, then go MG... You don't have the money or have it but don't want to spend it now... Go MG and then go 8K later, but it will cost more then the price of those going CF & Forged direct to 8K, and you'll be at the tail end of the 8K upgrades with MG.

The wait continues on SXT...and dsmc2 hit most dates! Now I just need my 8k
