Jarred any chance to make another thread and make a poll for new name? Lots of people disliked it.

ugh, no. RED should be able to name their little creations whatever they want. I thought we moved past this after the Bomb discussion turned out to be nothing but a tempest in a teapot.

Put the BOMB and the SWITCHBLADE on the WEAPON. RED has a warrior aesthetic, that's their thing.

I'm sure that RED is saving the name BAZOOKA for something extra special.

Sorry... I saw your post as tongue-in-cheek. No offense intended.

Yes, RED has a certain aura that some don't embrace. I myself was against the Skull reference at first, but I see how it may fit new form factor perfectly. I think these things will be moot when the camera is out and is known more by its reputation than its name.

I don't think the public will care one way or another.

which is always the case. There are always people that will dislike our naming conventions, even if we called it golden rainbow happy time. There is never a way to make everyone happy... no matter what we do, naming being one of them. People actually yelled at us back in the name for using RED as to some people that is a swearword for whatever reason.

Regardless.. if you are ever in a situation where you think people seeing your camera name is going to get you in trouble gaffer tape can solve that... just like it did for people that thought Bomb would get them in trouble, Dragon, Swat rails, etc. etc. etc.

Well, obviously I can't speak for everyone, but I'm quite familiar with the term "Creative Weapon" and the non-english equivalent of the term "Instrument of Labor", which is as peaceful as it gets. So, to me personally Red Weapon is a creative weapon of labor for filmmaking. Though I'm sure it's a great PITA in airports and security. You can't just tell them the real sick fuck terrorist will rather carry a fluffy box with "Super Happy Pink Ponies, Hello Kitty XOXO" labels on it, full of evil shit inside. I just hope it's all gonna be well for Red and it's global community for years and decades to come.

I can't wait to turn to my AC and quietly say, "...prepare the weapon..."

heh heh! Well you definitely made me laugh with that one.

and theres always "Power up the weapon" too.

Freya

heh heh heh we can engrave that on the side of yours.

That is very tempting, hold that thought, whenever I get the Weapon, it might be the coolest name combination ever... a Weapon named Golden Rainbow Happy Time:biggrin5:

It's already done. Price will go back to $9500 on Monday and you guys can do your thing.

This is what family does... love and war and fist fights in the backyard but it all comes from a good place and usually ends up in a good place.

THIS is why I have continued being a loyal Red user... there is no other company in the world with people like you and your colleagues, Jarred!
You saved my business with this! :thumbup1:

Go away for a few hours and come back to some amazing generosity.

names.

I like Dragon² or Dragon³ even.

more than the name, I just want it to rock. Weapon, fine for me.

Funest thread on RU in a while.

How can anyone complain about the name? Imagine being on set, and turning to your AC and say: "BRING ME THE WEAPON, AND MAKE SURE IT'S LOADED"...nice!

Well, on the ATA carnet you can't gaff the name. I still think it's an unfortunate name,. Most likely it won't put anyone in jail when moving equipment overseas, but I've never enjoyed talking to customs officers anyway. And this naming approach doesn't help avoiding these nice chats with the officcers. Onced they asked me to put down the serial number of my iPhone and a 2gb usb thumb drive, so when I flew back I could prove I didn't buy it overseas. Ridiculous.

Jarred, I agree that no matter what name you put, many people will complaint, but I still think you guys can do better... :-) and you still have time until NAB :-)

Remember they have been called Magazines for a reason :)

I have to agree 100% with this.
It's a two sided thing for me. One is travel, specially international. I know tape will fix a good part of the issues, but sometimes some people gets really hung up on paperwork and what is in it. I know officially the TSA couldn't care more about names, but somehow that memo didn't trickle down to all its agents and I had once to do some extensive splaining to an agent that didn't like my "Bomb". I had to power up the camera and connect it to prove that it was something else other than what it said on the side. It now sports a nice piece of black tape.
I'm in Europe at the moment and when I landed in Amsterdam, I had to go through security again and the agent there got really interested on my camera body, taking it out of my bag and looking through the seams. He even asked what "Dragon" meant. Not in a bad way, he just became curious. I can imagine with "Weapon" and a skull on the side that that curiosity will turn into deeper scrutiny.
The other side for me is that I'm a pacifist. I'm about peace, harmony and progress and not death and destruction. I know these names are not to be taken seriously, but it still has a negative connotation for me, no matter how little importance I put into it.
Jarred ,you know I'm a big proponent of your cameras, love them, and I'm sure this next step will be another big one, but if there is at all a chance that the name is not set in stone, or metal, or carbon fiber, please consider a change.
I know you can't please everyone, and I wasn't even sure I should express this, as in the grand scheme of things this is a minor detail, but I have a feeling that there are more that share this opinion than I thought...

I pretty much make it standard to preload the RED website and some pictures onto my phone when going through customs with my RED gear now! Always get stopped haha! I generally just say "same camera they used to film The Hobbit"...

I totally agree. PLEASE change the name. As someone who's been on the RED journey since the beginning, I have to say this makes me groan. I long for the day when RED can be confident enough to step back a bit from the aggressive, macho paramilitary "bad ass" vibe and align its brand around what it really delivers—cutting edge, professional camera equipment to the professional filmmaking community. That doesn't mean you have to be generic or boring. You can still have attitude and be cool and disruptive. But really... "weapon?". Imagine a client or professional associate asking you..."what do you shoot?" And then answering....ughh... "Weapon". It would be embarrassing.

To be blunt, this is a fucking stupid name.

Now that I'm on a rant, I've always felt that way about labeling your gear Red "Pro". Really? What else would it be? Of course it's professional. Is there a 'non-pro' or amateur line? I know that was a reaction to some of the early AKS that were substandard, but 'cmon. Be proud. Confident. You're a leader in your market. Act like it! Spin the baseball cap around. Evolve the brand to reflect the quality and intelligence of your products.

Hire a CMO or an agency to help with product naming and brand.

Don't get me wrong. I love you guys. You know that. I just don't want to have to buy a fucking "weapon."

So just say "the new RED camera".

Personally, I don't get too worked up over marketing in either direction. Would an awesome name make an ounce of difference in what the camera is, what it can do, and what you can do with it?

Could you include a personalized brand option for people that really hate it? I mean, it would probably cost quite a bit extra but...maybe some people really want something else that badly.

Then it could be the RED - "Up to 20 characters". Most would be happy with Weapon, or whatever you go with, people that really aren't have an option.

RED's camera names sometimes take a while to settle in. Red One was a natural fit, made sense. I thought we would see a RED TWO, but alas we got Epic. At first, I wasn't sure about the name. It didn't feel like a model of camera. Well, that name stuck and started rolling off the tongue after a while. Then they announced Dragon and I was again not sure this was a great naming choice. It just didn't feel like a camera name. Now, some time has gone by and when someone mentions Dragon, the first thing that comes to mind is the camera. So, I've been wrong about this every time.

Once again, I saw the name that Jarred leaked and thought to myself this is a bad name for a camera. Weapon does not sound like something you'd ask for at a camera rental facility. I feel like it is a mistake. But as mentioned, I have been wrong about this before. I just wonder with all of the possible names this is the one that covers the most possible ground. Will Weapon roll off the tongues off studio execs, rental agents, directors, photographers, etc? Sometimes simplicity is best. R65 for example. The 65 implying....well. But I know nothing of what's best for RED or what meets their internal culture. It certainly fits with the bad boy image of some of their previous marketing. I can't fault them for being who they are. I still think this is a fun experiment for them and they're just a bunch of renegade filmmakers who also happen to make cameras. They probably will never be Arri or Sony and I'm sure they're plenty okay with that. For all I know in a year Weapon will sound like a perfectly natural name for a camera. And I'll be wrong again. :-)
