Take a math class and ask what statistical significance means. Basing your perception of reality on a 2% sample is not intelligent.

Actually, no it is not. Significant would be greater than the miniscule percent of overall Red users who have spoken. What this poll currently is the opposite of significant. Forum posters are a tiny demographic. Bias your actions based on their noisy opinions at your own peril.

If anything, most of the fans of the "Weapon" name are Reduser regulars.
If those busy professionals who don't hang out here everyday voted, I'm sure the poll would be even more skewed in favor of change.

Source?

There is also the observation that RED has always done the "wrong thing" and have come out on top.

Personally I like it more when they revolt on technical parameters.

Well, who Would have thought that they have a sample size calculator on the Internet.
http://www.raosoft.com/samplesize.html
for a 95% confidence, with 172 votes, and a "Population" of 57,455, we have a 7.46% margin of error.
That means that even if you added, say 7.5% to the group that wants to keep the name and took 7.5% away from the group that would like to change the name, more than 50% would want to change the name, less than 30% wanna keep it. But the right numbers would be a range:

keep it: 14.5-29.5%
Change it: 51.5-66.5%
Dont care: 11-26%

This is with 172 votes. The more votes, the smaller the margins. But the trend is definitely there.

Yup. There's never a controversy about that.

Hahahaha
You're kidding, right?

I have been in the midst of a lot of controversy over technical developments RED has forced on the industry.
But that is a more fun battle to take on. IMHO.

You guys who want to spin the current sample size as statistically significant: not going to happen. Random internet calculator does not trump the accepted practice of requiring a statistically significant sample to support a hypothesis. Frankly, the sample itself isn't even random to begin with, and assertions of being "sure" how everyone else feels are not helping.

Let's stick to expressing our personal opinions, and acknowledging them for what they are: one person's opinion. This is Red's product to name, and personally I hope they stick to their guns (so to speak). That's nothing more than my opinion, and I for one won't pretend to know how everyone else feels.

Numbers don't lie. 7.5% margin of error is a high number. But even so the trend is shown and clear. No spin, just math.

Ultimately I don't care what they call it. I will admit that it wouldn't be my first choice though, not because of the "Weapon" name itself, it just sounds weird, almost like using the wrong "tense" of a naming convention. I Just think it's too broad.

Red "Weapon" is like other companies naming things like "Apple Device" "Toyota Vehicle" "Dell Machine"

It's as if it needs to be a subcategory name.

For example:

"Red Magnum" "Red Revolver" "Red Flame" "Red Pop Gun" etc… Just have a nicer ring to them.

Am I making any sense?

Weapon doesn't have as much charm as Epic, Scarlet, or Dragon.

I think that the 'sample' suggests that a group of people who are already redusers prefer "weapon" not be engraved on the camera they are holding. Perhaps RED could offer an option in which there was no engraving except for 'RED' or 'Red Digital Cinema' and the camera's serial #? Some users might appreciate that option independently of whether they liked the name "weapon," or any other name, so it might be a great option to consider and potentially offer as part of the upgrade path. It will be exciting to see what this new camera can do.

Here, I throw some suggestions, offered, no copyright claims.

Red Moon
Red Explorer
Red Discovery
Red Journey

(Based on recent connections with Nasa)

Red Revolution
Red Freedom
Red Magic
Red Creation
Red Creator
Red Force
Red Mithos
Red Slayer
Red Eclipse
Red Babel
Red Universe

The name is actually refreshing, quite frankly. We live in a leftist, castrated, politically correct country now. I'm all for a name that harkons back to the good old days when men could be men and we could do some shit kicking without having the PC police start a shit storm against us!!!

Mike

Yeah, I miss those days too

You guys who want to spin the current sample size as statistically significant: not going to happen.

Spindoctors don't marvel at sunsets, nitpick skin tonalities and lug gear across mountains to share beauty with others.

The only one who can make that judgement call is the company leadership deciding on its product's future.

Random internet calculator does not trump the accepted practice of requiring a statistically significant sample to support a hypothesis.

There is no hypothesis.

Many people have felt the need to express their gut feeling towards the product's naming. Many Redusers are camera owners. Naming tends to affect the product's vibe and resulting carma. Name interpretation varies. Words posses energy properties. No hypothesis.

Try putting a word "butt" on someone's hat. Write something provocative on your t-shirt and go on a date or a business meeting. Consider wrapping a word "MURDER" around a flower buquet and giving it to your loved one, explaining that to you it represents the murder of hatred, and consider whether your intent alone will be sufficient for the word to resonate with the desired vibe.

No hypothesis.

Denial - perhaps.

Frankly, the sample itself isn't even random to begin with, and assertions of being "sure" how everyone else feels are not helping.

The sample and the closed thread are a reflection of things happening on grander scale.
Whether the reflection is proportionate or not to the full scale is less important then the matter it reflects.

The matter which affects the product maker.
The matter which is best left valorized by the product maker.

Let's stick to expressing our personal opinions, and acknowledging them for what they are: one person's opinion.

Red has damaged its own reputation in professional realm with a couple of moves, related to few technical choices (connectors, ergonomics), few marketing choices (3K for $3K, R1s for grabs), few product choices and few branding routes.
While having overall great and very powerful product, whose full potential is underestimated by many due to some of those moves.
Not a personal opinion but accurate deduction by many, based on multiple experienced reactions throughout the industry.

Many issues like these are neither exclusive to Red nor unusual, if one considers many factors affecting development, adaptation and maturing of any creative process or product, and especially considering many things which come with pioneering. Larger companies have far greater and many times more complex problems to deal with. Not a personal opinion.

Based on a few snippets this product likely holds a great potential to solve a few currently existing important issues and further utilize the power of a modular high-end camera concept. Simple product's body tagging issue seems to get in the way for this product to fully shine. And the obstacle is minor and easily avoidable from the very start.

This is Red's product to name, and personally I hope they stick to their guns (so to speak). That's nothing more than my opinion, and I for one won't pretend to know how everyone else feels.

This is Reduser and from its beginning and even prior to it on DVX subforum, its main concept has been based on interaction between the folks at Red HQ and product users, and those intending to become. It has not developed based on complete fanboyism and unquestionable acceptance but healthy interaction (in most cases) which has helped Red to develop, adapt and improve their products.

it is clear. No hanging chads on this vote.

And the people who say they are OK with WEAPON usually do so with a shrug of shoulders. "I`ll get used to it and I think I can live with the problems"...and these are the people sticking by it!

This.

167 votes isn't even .3% of the members

Also
no assumption about those NOT included in the 167 sample can be made
AND
You need some data about the 57,000 to draw any conclusions at all. If that is the number of registered accounts on this site we need to have an idea of how many of those are duplicate, bogus or inactive accounts. You need to know if, when and how often they actually use the product and it would be helpful to know what percentage of them purchase the product.

The only thing that we can say about the population of RedUser is that 57,000 represents some number of people (- the aforementioned erroneous accounts) with interest enough to share an opinion about Red products or cinematography on the internet, but even that is a stretch. How many of those 57,000 are just trolls? How many registered simply to post in For Sale? Etc. ... How many registered just to tell some other RedUser to fuck off?

How useful IS that?

Thank you Steve for the perspective.

My bigger concern is not the badge which can be obviously covered or removed but its whats listed on a customs carnet as a "Weapon" when traveling in remote and already awkward boarder entry points around the world. Im sure 99.2% of RED owners are not going to have a problem but the small percent that travel to awkward, remote and hostile areas this is going to be a very real problem.
